hmmm
Well, guess there are some artists that I wish would've kept doing funk longer than they did, Rick James for example.

Lakeside, Sun, Instant Funk, post 1975 Ohio Players, Glenn Goins.

hmmm
The ones that I think are slightly overrated are War and Tower Of Power (and I'm not saying either one of these bands suck or that I don't like 'em)

EDIT: One of the most overrated 'funk' artists: Prince.
Again, I'm not saying he can't be funky and I'm not saying I don't like him, I love the lil' fella. Go check out Prince: Music & More and you'll see what I'm talkin' about... disbelief ... goddamn famboys actin' like Prince is the messiah of funk. Our Little Purpleness couldn't hold a candle to most real funk bands.

That's because a lot of people over in that section were first exposed to Prince when pop radio picked him up in 1982 with "Little Red Corvette". Since that was their first exposure to him, naturally they weren't listening to funk to begin with or they would have heard of him long before 1982. There have been threads over there such as "When Did You First Discover Prince" and you would be amazed at the abundance of answers such as 1982 or 1984 (by those who are old enough of course).

If you notice when they give funk examples, it is always someone that Prince has said were his influences such as James Brown, Larry Graham, Sly Stone, or George Clinton. They have never heard of other bands such as The Barkays, Lakeside, Zapp, Con-Funk-Shun, Brick, etc.

Very Yes
Angel
Honey
Let's Do It (Interpolated with 'Let's Love')
Varee Is Love
Love In The Night
Dream Maker
We Can Make Love
Slow Jam
Sunshine And Love
Love Jones
Never Let It Go Away
No Hiding Place
I'll Set You Out O.K.
Given In To Love

Horns, by a long shot

I don't Prince is doin' real funk anymore. He has a couple of funky-ish tunes here and there, but he's more into rock/contemporary r&b/pop nowadays.
Oh and, for the record, I don't think he can get down with the best of 'em. He can do funk, no doubt about it, but he ain't a heavy hitter.

That's pretty close to my opinion also. I would say the last year that there was a lot of funk was 1984. Early 1985 started out OK, but by the time the summer arrived, a certain little goodie two shoes emerged and things started getting more adult contemporary and pop sounding.

The "Old School Jams" series are always good. I think I have Volume 3, 4, and 6. I would have to check to make sure. Anyway, I have three volumes.

They are always 2-CD sets and many times have rare 12 Inch versions that are hard to find. They are also a very reasonable price.
