As much as I like reflection, that song is NOT a single. Waaaay too mellow for radio. As far as the Musicology single goes. I personally started out not that enthusiastic about this song, cause there doesn't seem to be much there in the way of melody and the lyrics aren't that interesting. (Of course "Bootylicious" was a smash hit, so lyrics only mean so much to airplay.) But that loop. That loop is damned infectious and very danceable. I'd still be surprised if it does anything on Top 40 radio, but it's defintely growing on me. This just may be the first of his Jamesbrrownish tunes that I dig. . When I heard the first few seconds of this song I was like OHHHHH BOY THIS SOUNDS LIKE THE SHIT!. In fractions of seconds I was imagining how I was going to tell my brother and all of my friends who gave up on Prince long ago that PRINCE WAS BACK WITH A KILLER SONG. 'No really guys, this time it's for real' The first few seconds are so funky and the groove is so cool in a simple confident sort of way. But after a minute or so I found myself waiting for Prince to take it to the next level and . . . HE NEVER DID. I think the song could have been great but, it's missing that next punch. I'm not sure but, I think what's missing is a good break. It needs a break somewhere around the 2 minute mark . About that far into the record he needed to take it up a few notches and really crank up the funkand let his voice loose. Some kick ass horns, a keyboard solo, a few yells, or, at least some funky guitar work. Because he didn't do that the song gets boring and starts to sound repetitive and I got bored too. The video is great and the song is ok but it could have been better . [This message was edited Wed Mar 24 23:10:23 2004 by chrisslope9]

The bass kills me! It's a fantastic song and the best video Prince has ever made. This song has a strong commercial potential; it is catchy, original (you'll bash me for that , but in comparison to all this NERD stuff it is a revelation. Real instruments ), and if Sony push it it may be a big hit. Love it! We Can Funk

I AM ..... SAD
At a time when a number of grounbreaking producers are shaping the sound of the future, Prince comes up with another lame JB rip-off....Then you could say: "OK, nothing new (i.e. totally outdated) here, but listen to the music(ology), Pharell and Dre can kiss his ass, they'll never reach him".....Well, OK, where is the fuckin' musicianship then ???? In a basic loop ? Well, if so, I prefer 95% of Andre3000's loops on "Love Below"! This song would like to be a hit single a la Sexy MF, but Sexy MF was at least a semi-innovative JB rip-off (not a pale copy) and most importantly it grooved and had a fuckin' hook! Damn, he's been growing as a musician recently, but he's been sharply declining as a composer and producer. Maybe Pharell will try to save this as a single (don't care about charts, but as others said it is clearly the goal here, so we can't escape judging the chart potential of this lame B-side to Sexy MF)

Keep trying. And use the link Universalluv gives above. Occasionally I get an error message but keep hitting the link and hopefully you'll get through. Unless your windows media is whack, or whatever. [This message was edited Thu Mar 25 1:43:07 2004 by TheFrog]

I found the song on KaZaa. It is Live on Leno, so not the single or video version, but at least you can hear it then. Still looking for the vid though. 0-+>Live4LoveAndLoveWillLive4U<+-0

DrD said: Maybe Pharell will try to save this as a single (don't care about charts, but as others said it is clearly the goal here, so we can't escape judging the chart potential of this lame B-side to Sexy MF) I disagree that Prince's main aim here is for the single to chart. I think it's a great video that will fit in really well on MTV and VH1 etc. It's "commercial" in that way. But the song itself is not intended as a commercial single. It's a simple, fun and above all FUNKY song - but definitely NOT a catchy tune that will do well in the singles chart. IMO the video is intended to promote the album. Don't think it's coincidence that the album has the same name. Prince's target audience is significantly more mature than average + is more likely to buy the album than the single. The video will do a GREAT job of promoting the album. It's a classy video. I'm really looking forward to flicking through the 100s of music channels we now have on satellite in the UK + coming across it! Time to turn the living room stereo up to LOUD! Good on him.

I've not seen the whole video. But I must say I find it pretty amusing that I think I can tell people's ages according to who's posting!
Look: 70s funk and the 80s are back...this is the time for Prince to be out there yeah teaching...but lest those of us who were here forget: people have been ripping Prince madly since Purple Rain. And I've heard at least 2 songs RECENTLY (Red Light by Jonny Lang and ____ by Pink) where I heard what I felt was something from Little Red Corvette. N.E.R.D. was just on Jimmy Kimmel and Pharrell was doing his little Prince scream (adapted, but not enuf, youngin). Conan O'Brien does the Sexuality/DMSR scream at least once a week. Hey: the man's been around for 25+ years! I'd like to see most of us at age 45. His reach is far and wide and sometimes we dont' even know it. Anybody who grew up in the 80s listening to R&B/Funk remember when synthesizers got hot again? Guess why? Cuz PFunk had already stalled so... But the most wonderful thing I see is, if you are passionate enough to write about it, then he touched you. The worst thing for him would be if you said nothing and went on your way, acting like he didn't exist. And there are some songs people just won't like! After all this time, after seeing him and having him walk right past me at the club in LA of the same name, I STILL can't stand "Glam Slam". Sort of liked the 12", but...There's others too (mostly when he ventured into rap and instead of doing it himself had "someone else" do it). Anybody who creates that much (and we don't even know how much) won't be hitting the highest highs all the time. Cuz if everything's wonderful, then he must have sold his soul! I used to joke that Prince could fart and I'd buy...it would have to be a sexy, musical, spiritual far tho! Well, hope to see some of yall next Monday at Staples. Org me if there's a get 2gether somewheres. TheBoostress

I found this song really boring when I first heard on the Tavis Smiley show, but seeing the whole thing I've really come to love it. Some of the charm is in the minimalism of it all. And I love that he's trying to foster young musicians and bring back real music. The scene where da full mad gangsta gets turned away and the kid let in is a great diss to Ja Rule, 50 Cent and other talentless hacks of the like. I think we have a winner here. Maybe Prince is back?

comeon said: i like the jay leno version MUCH better. this band is tight as hell. on the studio version there is a sample looped through the entire song and that is the entire groove.
it reminds me of sign o the times and other studio albums where he plays all the instruments in the studio. then he plays it live with a band and it sounds much better. not the best song, but live it is real funky and fun. cant wait to hear him to dmsr and other old hits that he hasnt played in a while. (not when u were mine, take me with u, or raspberry beret). He has used drum machines and loops forever. Because he's a real musician he knows the value (not sure that's the right word -- experimentation better) of using drum machines (uh, computer blue, most of 1999 and controversy). It is fun, and I like him bringing back the fun "Time" synth! Reminded me of "Cool"...and I'm hearing that in music again. "Ready for the Curl - Oh Sheila" anyone? Or how about Stand Back... "7" has a loop throughout that was used by many rappers just before then and I loved P for making that a funky, spiritual song! And if you think he really played drums on "All the Critics Luv U in New York..." And really, the creator of one of the baddest bass licks of all time (777-9311) can do that, cain't he? As for the Musicology video, someone commented that the kid looked like Morris Day...it's the cheeks. What I did notice (and P, you're are definitely hittin' it!) is that's the kid in the Pepsi commercials playing Jimi Hendrix and what would have happened had the kid drank Coke instead. Even had the same outfit on! And tho I remember at the time you taking exception to the automatic comparison to Jimi when you play more Santana...you know how that goes. And the scene where the father (brother?) comes to claim his records...priceless. I used to build Tinker Toys and sing along w/the Spinners, the OJays (and everything else from TSOP)...whatever I could grab. From what I feel, that's the Musicology P is talking about. I also love the non-entry to the thugs...Prince's old club in LA, Glam Slam, was a club called Vertigo prior (think that's what it's called again). It was famous in the mid-late 80s' for charging $20 cover and turning you away if you weren't dressed right. The fact that P wears clothes (and badass clothes...he's wearing the H out of 'em) and expects that is cool too. I love the props to the Nicholas Bros...and it's funny cuz those kids look pretty young and when the Nicholas brothers were young they got those legs up HIIIIGH. Also love it cuz it shows how much of an artist Prince is...I was fortunate to see the Joffrey Ballet do Billboards here in LA (course I wanted to see not only for the dance, but because P had written special parts of Thunder for this show! It was AMAZING...think my drill team did a better job w/Baby I'm a Star though). Check out this link for a review...I just got tears http://www.cs.vu.nl/pub/i...ffrey.txt. Last but not least, the crowd songs are no worse than the NY sounds on Lady Cab Driver, the bong sounds on Now, and I know he's used those crowd sounds before but can't remember. Doesn't Jet use that too in it's Motown drum ripoff (great song BTW)? I love that people are still so passionate about P! What kills me is that the last time I saw him live was in WA at the Gorge in 1994 and that's considered old school!

Novabreaker said: I never thought this day would come, but... I'm seriously considering not buying the new Prince album!
The groove is interesting and the whole thing is indeed kinda fun, but the lyrics and not to mention those embarrassing crowd noises are just terrible. The track certainly isn't going anywhere as a composition. Now that would be just perfectly fine had this been a b-side or a NPGMC download, but a single release with a professional video? You guys had me expecting for another "Get Wild". This isn't even the next "Silicon"! Bummer. And I do mean it. Bummer. And this is what I mean about the age thing...I felt like you do about Get Wild! And I started to pull away from Prince...would still cut ya if ya say something wrong about him, but realized that, like the relationship with parents and kids, you can love 'em but sometimes ya need to let 'em go...they and u will be back. And you're still a true "fam" if you do that...but if ya go to the movie, you'll get it free anyway. Sometimes his songs have to grow on you. This is 20+ years of fandom talking. Do what you feel TheBoostress

Sorry to say, yet again, that trying to make this the lead single off of a new album that's supposed to get the most attention you've had in several years is just plain wrong!!! There's no damn hook in the song that's going to make the average listener/video viewer want to keep listening to it. It's just a looped beat that ain't even all that funky! He's trying to go "old school", but this song doesn't inspire me to do anything (except turn it off) like the grooves he's mentioning in the song. I'm not saying this new album will be a flop (ain't heard but a few of the jams on the leaked tracklist), but putting this out as the lead single right now will severely impede any momentum he's gained over the past 7 weeks with all of the appearances and performances he's done! Let's hope another, MUCH stronger single will be released VERY soon to pick up the slack from this Musicology single! [This message was edited Thu Mar 25 4:05:34 2004 by alexnvrmnd]
