Prince is the man no doubt. He could sing humpty dumpty and that shit would be blazing!

The video is tight better than many he has tried to get out over the last couple times he pushed for re-entry into the mainstream and dont think he aint trying to push now. And why shouldnt he the scene really needs something to kick it in the ass and wake it up.

But is this a great single or even a great cut in respect to what we have gotten from him or his earlier work?

Man its cool but it doesnt have the raw funk or inventive life of most of his early work and thats not living in the past its just true. I keep hoping that some of the spark you see on him recently and some of the sounds you hear in between cetain cuts are gonna show up as a full force return of what we hope he is still capable of but many artists no matter how talented cant seem to recapture the perception they had in youth to create those Jams. Although Dylan did come back after his son put some fire under that ass so anything is possible. I know I'm dying for it from the man.

This is such a throwaway track for Prince. So disappointing.

Cosmetically it's like "Prettyman" or "The Work" and every other James-Brown-inspired jam, but it lacks the humour of the the former and the message of the latter.

I mean, I enjoy it for what it is. It's just ironic that for a song extolling the virtues of real musicianship, so little actually happens musically here. It's just a loop over and over... If you bought a cheap Casio keyboard and set it to "auto-funk" mode, it'd sound like Musicology.

I've never really liked Prince's "meta-songs" anyway - songs that weren't really about much apart from Prince or his music or whatever. I put Musicology in the same category as "Cybersingle" or "My Name is Prince".

It's a pity really. As a theme (bringing back real music, real instruments, real musicianship to pop music) Prince could make "Musicology" work - he certainly has the musical talent to get up there on stage and blow everyone away, whatever instrument he chooses. Such a shame that in this case he doesn't really choose any instrument, he just pouts and squeals to a pseudo-JB groove. I'd have been happier with some real musicology.

Also I kinda think Prince is missing the point. Musicology shouldn't be about emulating old music, someone else's music. Surely it's better to talk about the virtues of real music and musicianship (whatever the instrument - be it a sampler, turntable, cello or flute), songwriting and singing. Alas, "Musicology" the single appears to illustrate none of the above. It looks like posturing, Prince trying to rebrand himself as an old-school showman like James Brown... but I think The Rainbow Children and NEWS both show that Prince has a lot more creativity in him to offer than a vegas-style showman churning out the tunes could.

I think this video is great. Prince looks great, the dancing is great and the kid is cute.
That said, ss someone else mentioned, the only thing I kept waiting for was the band to kick in and take the tune to the next level. I would have liked to see a bridge inserted where Maceo gets it rolling and Prince accompanies with a little rythm guitar. You KNOW that is how it will go down live.

All in all great video and the song is very infectious. This is a much better tune than the Work Part 1

Okay, I heard the song. I LIKE IT - reminds me of a James Brown Style groove. It's funky - all you all that don't like - well I don't know what you want. Prince is different - can't expect Purple Rain and 1999 again and again.

I can't wait for April 20 th - I'm gonna camp outside the wreka stow to get my CD.

This is a very nice video. Tight! But again, the song leaves much to be desired. It's more of that tired-ass James Brown shit that we heard on The Work pt. 1. Quite frankly, I'm tired of it. And if, as Prince says, "school's in session", I wonder who's doing the teaching these days - Prince or those he has inspired. This, especially for a lead single, is weak as fuckin' water.

You know... now I understand why Prince keeps talking about taking people to school. Granted the music is repeative but that is the way it was in the day. The real soul was more than the beat, it was the lyrics and the emotion betrayed through the vocal interpertation. And, most songs really didn't get to bangin' until the end any how.

As I mentioned before, the song has the complicated simplicity of the For You and Prince albums. It crisp and clean. Scan the radio, how much electronicenhancement can you point to any song. Everything from vocals to the sound of coins falling has been electronically modulated.

I'm glad I was exposed to a variety of music generes, or I'd be as narrow minded the majority.

that's the one thing that is a bit surprising on this single....no solos

there seems to certainly for Prince or whoever from the band to lay down something-guitar, horn, something to spice this up a bit.....

also, miss when Prince used to throw some odd curve ball into the middle of a groove to shake it up a bit and make the return to the groove seem even more funky..

The studio version of this song is okay, but he does it so much better live. I think because he changes it up live and it sounds more funky. I saw him in NYC at Club Black the same night he got inducted in the the Hall of Fame and when he sung this song it was similar to the way he did it on Leno and it sounded so good. I think after listening to it live I can't really accept it the way it is on the album. This song may not hit the charts so hopefully he has some explosive surprises (he's always good for it) on the album and release those as singles also. Or what he could do is release a live version of the song as a single.. that would be tight!
