Not a great track to be anywhere but a maxi-single, never mind the lead off for his attempt to reclaim musical stardom. I don't know what he's thinking. The Work pt I, which was the lead off track and the most exposed for TRC, was pretty bad but much more adventurous than this. This album is fighting an uphill battle already.

This song will need a serious remix done to it before radio will even touch it. (not that I care if it's on radio or not).
Again, I say this is a horrible choice of a lead single. After the serious buzz he has created after the Grammy and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Performances he needs something with more of an edge to it. Prince makes this kind of bullish in his sleep. This nothing but "The Work" and "Pretty Man" all over again.

[b]This song is hot. I don't care if its not radio friendly. I never listen to the radio because the songs I like aren't played on the radio!
The video was great the ladies were hot and the song is funky. Too many of you want P to be what he was. Hes moved on and you should too. This song is exactly the neo-soul kind of deal that D'Angelo, Maxwell and others are trying to capture I don't want P to sound like Jay-Z or 50 Cents. I just want to hear and see him again being relevant. His energy has been lacking for several years but I have the feeling that this record might be the kind of return that many of us feel is long over due. Some of you are hilarious...I guess you guys want to see him do TRL too? I mean this guy is bigger than all of that foolishness Prince was unbelievable during the RRHOF ceromony...both performances. If he is bringing that kind of energy and swagger with this record then I think we will all be pleased I guess some of you want him to do a record like Brittany Spears Toxic which is clearly a 80s Prince rip off. Hes not doing that sh*t no more!! So let it go Those that are saying they aren't feeling this song don't get it Dance... Let me see you dance

Prince is genius, but he's human. He's made bad songs before and he'll continue to make bad songs, this is just another example. No, I don't want him all over TRL or to be Jay-Z, but this song clearly sucks, and most of you act like you're committing a sin if you don't like one prince record. He's talking about Musicology, but where's the music? It's a freakin loop for crying out loud. "Calhoun Square", "The Sensual Everafter", "Don't Play Me", that's music, that's original, that's musicology. This new song is another half-assed JB rip off. Quit acting like we're not Prince fans because we don't like the song. It sucks, let's hope the rest of the album is better. [This message was edited Wed Mar 24 14:05:06 2004 by Taurus]

I never said they were "so great", but MUSICALLY (well maybe not Don't Play Me), they are much more interesting than that crappy ass loop on Musicology(which is supposed to be about getting back to real insturments). Anyway, you missed the entire point. The swagger you speak of on both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Grammy performance was incredible I agree, to bad it isn't here on thi lame azz single. It will be a major dissapointment to release this sh!t as a lead single after the hot buzz he has created throughout the industry.

I think it's a great James Brown sound-a-like, layed-back track - but not a good lead-off single. It doesn't really change it's beat or rhythm thoughout, you hope it's gonna explode out or something, but all you get is that shrieking organ note that you can't help feeling Dr. Fink would have done something more interesting with. I think for a 'comeback' single you need something a bit kick-ass. It's funky, but not punchy. I have a friend who was blown away by Prince's expressive guitar solo at the Hall of Fame - but I don't think he's gonna be blown away by this, which really is not at all expressive, innovative or inspiring for a song which is about how certain bands inspired Prince... Prince can knock this sort of track out standing on his head. And often does. I don't hate it. It's okay for an album track. My guess is it won't chart high or that it will disappear from the charts real quick if released as a single. But I could be proved wrong. Place your bets here! I totally agree with everything you said. I´d like to add though, that I think Prince might have included this track because it can be funky as hell if played live (and he apparently sees the album as a companion to the live shows since they´re presented to us in cojunction with each other). It doesn´t knock your socks off on CD though...

I can't believe this is the same man who recorded Computer Blue. The kid was a good actor, though. What are you talking about!? What are you talkin about!!? You youngin's. This is a joint for those who used to put their backs out to the song Car Wash, Ring My Bell, Wishing on a Star. Man I hear all kinds of influence it this joint, particular the songs from For You and Prince albums. Musicology is natsy for those who remember and wonder what happened to those family cook outs where you got grandma doing the Electric Slide. I thought Angie Stone did a wonderful job slipping me into the Afro Puff, and bamboo ear rings, but Prince gonna make me slip on the platforms and work, girl! _________________________________________

Those that are saying they aren't feeling this song don't get it If this track was half as good as 'Toxic' he'd be laughing! Prince has been known to write very basic tracks in the past, sometimes with no melody whatsoever. See (as has been mentioned) The Work or Prettyman. Hell, even 'Sarah' (The Vault), one of the worst tracks he's ever released, is in the same category as Musicology. Prince fans may argue the merits of a funk workout without any melody whatsoever. But the guy in the street (who is open to Prince on a good day) wont entertain it for two minutes. And, quite frankly, nor should he. OASIS have had more sophisticated B-sides than this! (Don't call me bluff and ask me to name one - I'm only guessing!)

I tried to get this to work and it doesn't for me so I am wondering why they took this down and why it won't work now. I want to see this video as well even though I know I will not be disappointed in the song as some of you who have already declared the new cd a flop. Are there any real Prince lovers still on this site. Just a few from some of the comments.

I think the point is, Prince is clearly making a big push to reclaim his position in the public eye this year, which must surely include the charts and radio, and a big part of that is the first properly promoted single in a long time. If even we, the hardcore fans, have mixed feelings about this track as the choice for a single, then it is even more unlikely the general public are going to be hooked by it. If this track was just being put out by the NPGMC for download, I wouldn't be considering whether it will do well in the charts - but Prince has chosen to put this out as a promotional singel (I assume) so I think it is fair to consider how well it will do on radio and in the charts. I'm sure it is important to Prince that he succeeds, and I'd like him to succeed but I've got to question the impact of this song as a single.

All this bickerin back n fourth bout if its a hit or not means it just may well be. Some of Princes best singles were the one you didnt like until youve heard it severals times over and over. His music is like them damn photos made of dots that you have to keep starin at, it takes awhile, but once you see the picture within you'll see it forever and try to convince others how easy it is to see it. Just keep staring at this joint yawl. Um starting to see the s**t
