New topic PrintableMy God... now that I've listened to it several times, I just think it gets worse and worse! Don't get me wrong - I liked TRC, listen to N.E.W.S. on a regular basis and get huge kicks out of digging out some old rehearsal tapes where Bobby Z. just tunes his snare drum, but released as a single this has gotta be the low point of his long musical career. Everybody's been bragging recently how Prince is coming back to the spotlight and bringing back the "real music". Now where the fuck is it supposed to be? There's honestly speaking more real musical invention on the last Britney Spears track than on this one.
It's just... just plain effete.

When I saw the clip on the Tavis show, my first thought was that the groove could have been way better as it sounded like programmed loops which is ironic to the song. Now I love it, although I still feel that it could have grown even more tward the end. It was like whoah, this is getting funky, then... it's over. More, more, more! All Rights Reserved. |

Bummer hmmmm NO! and being only 18 years old and knowing what is hip now, it wont b Number 1 on 106 and Park. I think this song, and album, r just 4 the fans that have been with him through the years and the transformations, hence the two younger hip-hop guys weren't allowed n the club in the vid. I think that something else might b coming as my friend Octavius also thinks so, bcuz every1 still knows him as the Purple One with songs like 1999, little red corvette, when doves cry, purple rain, etc. They r still waiting 4 him 2 bust out with a guitar rip like n Computer Blue (like Wall is waiting 4). But i think it is good 4 him 2 come out with this album and song 2 get himself "back n the mainstream." Wait a while, he will come 2 his senses with Sony cuz they r going 2 want him 2 come out with something more HIP and he will do it. We might get lucky and he will do a thing with the revolution or the lovesexy band, or even come out with another vaults album. Just u wait n c.

I've been trying very hard, but the song just isn't doing it for me. The funk is there, no doubt about that. But geez. This should NOT be a lead single.

agree. But its our problem not his. He's on a new trip and its nowhere near as intense @ lovesexy. WILL PRINCE EVER TAKE US HIGH AGAIN?

I like it! I don't love it, but it's good fun. And I think the masses would enjoy it too, if it's promoted properly. The last two minutes of the song really give it the added punch it needs to take it to the next level.

I was so hoping the single would capture the energy of the live versions.
This is a bit on the weak side.

The link comes from npgmc, a post was up there with the link today...
The video is very very good - old school flavour and serious party vibes. Cash was spent. Definitely worthy of play. The main problem with the video is that there are not enough hot ladies in little or no clothing. This was clearly a stylistic thing, keeping with the old school vibes, but they defintely needed to show more skin. That's what gets the kids watching and that's what sells. I am not joking about this. The video would get played more if it had more brests in there... Problems with the tune: It is approx 45 seconds too long. The tune is a cool groove with some fun righteous lyrics but it has no chorus. Choruses are what sells music on the radio, on the MTV. This hasnt got a big chorus (or any punchy changes). that's my 2 cents commercially speakin.... personally i think it is great to see him back in a cool video, with a real fun party flavour... and the tune is fun but not ground breakin' (and tha's alright!) ak

I can put better funk 'loops' together in my own studio. Theres just nothing THAT special about, it isnt really Prince-flavoured either.
Just hope the live show aint that mediocre.

Why is the video hidden away on Colombia Record's website? There's not even a reference to it or Prince anyway on their news pages? You would have thought that the first place this video should have been found was on the NPGMC website... but no.
I think it's a great James Brown sound-a-like, layed-back track - but not a good lead-off single. It doesn't really change it's beat or rhythm thoughout, you hope it's gonna explode out or something, but all you get is that shrieking organ note that you can't help feeling Dr. Fink would have done something more interesting with. I think for a 'comeback' single you need something a bit kick-ass. It's funky, but not punchy. I have a friend who was blown away by Prince's expressive guitar solo at the Hall of Fame - but I don't think he's gonna be blown away by this, which really is not at all expressive, innovative or inspiring for a song which is about how certain bands inspired Prince... Prince can knock this sort of track out standing on his head. And often does. I don't hate it. It's okay for an album track. My guess is it won't chart high or that it will disappear from the charts real quick if released as a single. But I could be proved wrong. Place your bets here!

FUCK THE BULLSHIT!!!
THIS SHIT IS HOT AND FUNKY. I DON'T CARE IF IT MAKES THE CHARTS OR NOT. I DON'T LISTEN TO THE RADIO ANYWAY AND I WOULD THINK THAT MOST OF YOU "REAL" BELEIVERS IN "REAL" MUSIC KNOW THAT IT'S NOTHING BUT CRAP ON RADIO ANYWAY. IF THIS HAPPENS TO GET ON RADIO IT WOULD BE GREAT. FOR INSTANCE HOW MANY OF YOU GUYS LIKED HEY YA WHEN YOU FIRST HEARD IT.

The link was posted on npgmc and is not available via the colombia site, it is merely hosted there. maybe the idea is that we get some access, meanwhile colombia update their roster online, update their news and then release the clip...

To those of you that think that this is a poor lead single, please name for me a lead single for an album that you liked... right off the bat... without exception. I have always wondered why my favorite tunes were never released as singles and maybe simply never released.
C'mon, none of us have heard this song enough to make a sound judgement on it. We certainly have not had the time to make a real emotional attachment to it like the classics so, lets just enjoy the ride and understand that the guy who wrote it and determined it as the lead single is more succesful than any of us here. For me, I think the video is fun, poppy and right on time. I think the song screams for a long version. And it is much more than a loop. But, 2 each his/her own...what are we gonna do, get the single pulled back? Just enjoy!

I think the song's a bit boring after a while, but I liked it well enough. Love the kid though. And I have the same Sly poster that he does on his door. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

DAMN it is too short... somebody already posted this, but What they showed on Tavis was weak and kinda bland.. but apparently the song picks the fuck up after that... I LOVE IT!!! People, wake up... he's moving forward... not backwards.. i like his older shit better, but thats what recordings are made for....

yamomma said: Let's talk about this "Old School Joint for the True Funk SOUL-diers"
The funk elements are there, yeah. But lyrically, this song really does put your heart back into musicianship. I'm loving it. I would hope that a single will come out with a much more extended version where the musicianship is showcased more. Visually, the video is way cool with the depiction of the child riding his bike with the ace of spades in the spokes going to the old "mom and pop" record store, where you see the hand-drawn sign that says you get a free 45 with every concert ticket. The old man behind the counter... Ah... the good 'ol days... Flash-forward. The kid playing the 45 back again learning the song on his guitar. You see a picture of Jimi taped to the inside of his record player. Singing into the neck of the vacuume cleaner.. Right on! Forward to the show. You see some "thug dressed" kids outside trying to get in. Not a chance. Remember when you dressed up to go out? ("2 the 9's" ask your grandmother what that meant) The guys in the sharp suits are let in without question. The father, busting in the kid's bed-room reclaiming his LPs. Good one. Then taking him to the concert, putting him on his shoulders to see prince. Got me all misty. I will definitely be involved with my son when it comes to his knowledge of music. Notice all the old school posters in the kids bed room. Great visual. Too bad most kids of this generation wouldn't even recognize one of them. But that's part of the message, right? Then the funk hits! The song shifts gear and has you on you feet. The old school tap-dancing was hot. One question though. What's up with the guards in the riot gear? And just when you are ready to "keep the party moving", it's over. I don't think so. Prince, this better be "part 1". Fun groove, but I felt only "teased." Good song. Good video. Great message... Take your pick: Turn-table or a band? Very nice breakdown. I'm with you 100%. The photo of Jimi Hendrix on the "wreckut playa" was a very interesting decision. He could've chosen any one of a number of artists but he picked Jimi. Nice. Don't ya miss the feelin' music gave ya...back in the day? "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

The ironic part is that the song is all about encouraging musicianship/real musicians etc when the song sounds like a loop and really doesnt showcase much musicianship, 1 chord organ noise, same bass loop, false crowd noise and i dont hear any electric guitar work to shout about. This simply does not compare to Sly & The Family Stone or James Brown's work.
We are all entitled to our own opinion of course and that is merely mine

I love P forever, I really do, but folks, let's be real. This is not a great leadoff single.
Rather dull, really. Some have commented how funky it gets toward the end. But why? A few synth notes? And where are the horns? They're barely in the mix. I'ma P geek anyway, so this version is already spoiled for me by the far superior Leno version, where the horns kicked ass on the chorus, and they went into "Tighten Up" at the end. Anyone looking for P's best JB-rip of the last 5 years...check out "prettyman" on Rave. At least that thing moved. Eugnj420
