Nice to read such a positive review. The podcast has me desperate to get my hands on this. A shame the reviewer slags off 3121 and Lotusflower Which are damn fine album.

antonb said: Where would you put it? Along side lotus flower? Or a bit lesser? Music’s utterly subjective obviously, but to my ears, Lotus is a more interesting, fulfilling and gratifying artistic expression. As is Art Official Age. As is 3121. You’re going to get folk being highly critical due to their own expectations - and Prince himself warned us about the danger of those expectations continually. His own fault for setting such a high bar in the 80s where he was clearly the greatest recording artist that ever existed. You’re never going to get what you want if we keep comparing, although it’s the natural thing for the brain to do. This isn’t Parade. This isn’t Lovesexy. This isn’t The Gold Experience. This isn’t The Rainbow Children. It’s Welcome 2 America, and should be approached on that basis, and taken on its own terms. It’s essentially Prince trying out a new band. It’s funky, very interesting in places and playfully ‘deep’ (as deep as Prince gets anyway) but is essentially a homage to 70s black music and seeing as he didn’t continue the creative relationship with musicians on it and shelved the album, it tells you something perhaps. But I don’t want to dampen excitement - many people here will absolutely love it. Like I said earlier, I’ll post an in-depth analysis - not review because I hate that term - on Monday morning.

yep the review loses some of its power because of those comments, but How cool to think a pretty new Prince album is coming next week.! And its good!

Of course it’s good’ They’re all objectively ‘good’ - Prince was a world class musician, your ears might not like some of his sonic choices but, I would argue objectively even, none of it was of a poor standard. The argument I suppose lies in understanding which songs Prince was most engaged or inspired. But even uninspired Prince is, at the very least, always interesting if you know what you’re listening to. My perception is that the more you bring to the table with Prince, the more knowledgeable musically you are, you more you notice what makes him special. He could be generic, sure, but usually only when he was doing a genre exercise. Most of Prince’s output is, speaking comparatively while held up to his peers, is very unusual indeed. Particularly his vocal harmonies, which will one day perhaps attract just as much attention as his guitar playing. And that’s not even mentioning his production and arranging abilities which were not only off the scale, but almost alien in approach - he seemed to be born naturally aware of how the human ear consumes and digests soundwaves and the subsequent emotions they can invoke. He was a master of sound. Most if not all of his output warrants study - but if you have him compartmentalised in your head as a specific type of musical artist then you will inevitable be disappointed in his output at times.

After one listen my first impressions is that it's a strong album and definitely worthy of release.
The girls vocals are featured very heavily across the album In this respect it does sound like a follow up to 20ten. Highlights for me were 1000 light years, Check The Record, Yes and One day we'll all be Free. One day we'll all be Free has a big Sly and The Family Stone vibe. As does Yes. I much prefer this version of When She Comes. No accordion. It hangs together really well as an album. I do think it will grow, second listen to Running Game just now and I enjoyed it more. Really thankful to be able to have this album. Thanks Prince. [Edited 7/23/21 11:35am]

Stand Up and B Strong seems to be a bad rip. There is a jittery noise in the background.
On second listen this another highlight. Great guitar solo [Edited 7/23/21 11:45am] [Edited 7/23/21 11:46am]
