Hot Summer makes sense here - out of context you could see it as a pointless, lightweight rewrite of Shake! Here, it’s juxtaposition reveals its true lyrical intent as a sly/Sly prophetic vision of future Charlie Manson-style race riots. Prince always enjoyed the dichotomy of making music that made you assume one thing on an initial listen but revealed layers over time, usually with a lyric that initially seems superficial and throwaway, but is designed that way deliberately. Yes, the lyrics can be viewed as similarly lightweight and airy as the music, but that’s the beautiful thing about art, meaning is in the eye of the beholder. Few artists explain their work, even when the audience is completely wrong - as they understand it’s nothing to do with them once the set is out there. musically, it serves as a palette cleanser, like a fizzy sorbet, one that leaves a slightly bitter taste when you know what nettles and nonsense are in it. Again, it’s P trolling us. As it always was.

I personally found Stand Up & Be Strong very moving, although there are better songs, musically-speaking. To my perception, Prince generally only covers songs - on his albums - where there’s an underlying lyrical theme he either can’t quite capture or prefers how another person put it. ‘Sometimes the words of another seem to work out fine’. Live covers, it’s more about the music and the vibe it projects. SU&BS’s references to ‘Youre taking too many pills/Because you lost the thrill’ and ‘your life has gone on too long’ ‘your knees get weak’ etc would be far too literal and revealing if he had written them himself - I think he’s wanting to be honest but also able to deflect if challenged on it. But it’s clear to me that many lyrics in this struck a chord with him and in retrospect after his death, it’s pretty obvious why.

Yep, I don't have the app though, I just search for Prince Tidal on Google, open the artist page and it's there under EPs and singles. Anyway, not that big of a deal.

from the clips of the other songs I have listened too, Hot Summer is by far the weakest track on the album. However, like no23 has posted maybe it works in the context of the album. I like all the clips of the songs played.Im really looking forward to this album.
