I immediately heard the "bad rip" noises on "Stand Up and B Strong", but I think I can hear some (slightly more subtle) noises also on "1010 (Rin Tin Tin)" as well. I'll have to check again, as I was walking outside, listening to the song on in-ear headphones.

Could someone please transcribe the lyrics of "1,000 Light Years Away From Here?" They are deeply thought-provoking to me. I want to make a graphic with them.

I could take a crack at it myself, but I don't trust my ears to hear accurately enough. Thank you in advance!

My god, what an underwhelming album. This is the first time in memory that I haven't immediately hit 'play' again after my first listen of a 'new' Prince album. I'd be hard-pressed to even recall any of the songs I just heard and really have no desire to listen again anytime soon.

I'm polar opposite. From what I'd heard pre-release I thought this particular Prince 'sound' was not one of my favourites and the album would be mediocre.

But I actually love it. It's got real soul and coherence. Overall, it's not commercial, but heck, I never got into Prince follow trends.

Each to their own.

I really really really wanted to like this album.

It's just not very good. I hate to say it, but the creative well was tapped a long time ago. The only track that I actually kinda dug was the title track.

Phase3

I like the album but it's not "the best album of his last 2 decades"..very far from it
I can do without Shelby and the other girls singing lead vocals.
Very grateful to have this album,I do LOVE "check the record"
Now looking forward to the Blu-ray concert!

I love Prince but this a snoozefest. First listen I struggled to stay awake...and i was driving.

Prince was right, it should have stayed unreleased. But at least we are getting a blu ray concert.

Now back to the SDE series please.

So this was sourced not from masters but a glitch-laden CD-R?
.
Damn, and I was really looking forward to this release.
.
Preorders cancelled immediately after reading the recent posts in this thread.
.
So it’s pretty much official I guess: the Estate simply does not have the capabilities to do anything correctly with the posthumous releases.
.
I shouldn’t be surprised. Oh well, if Prince didn’t want this released I feel it’s best to not listen to it or supports its release. That’s been my stance with the shit-fidelity vault material and now this album is following suit with shit-fidelity as well.
.
Personally I’m choosing to avoid any and all forthcoming releases - not only because no one knows if or when Prince would’ve released it, but also because apparently there is no way for the Estate to access master recordings in order to do a properly mastered release of any vault material.
I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.

6/10 for me. Better than HITNRUN PHASE 1 (my least favourite album from the 2000s), but I can't think of another album I'd place below it from the 2000s.

Apparently a couple of people who have received the album early are reporting the clicks are not on their copies.

Hopefully this is true and the leaked files were the same sent out for review purposes and use in the podcast

On first list 1010 (Rin Tin Tin) is the absolute standout. A brilliant slab of staccato funk. Pleasantly surprised that it is a lot weirder than a lot of late era Prince.

EmmaMcG

The Official EmmaMcG Review (based on only hearing the album twice)

1. Welcome 2 America - 3/5
Decent opener. Not a song I'd listen to on its own but a good intro.

2. Running Game - 2/5
I don't like the female vocalist (Shelby?). Call me crazy but I think that in a Prince album, Prince should sing lead vocals on all songs.

3. Born 2 Die - 4/5
Very good. This is the real beginning of the album for me.

4. 1000 Light Years From Here - 4/5
Always liked the Phase 2 version. This is essentially a completely different song. And I like this one too. If not more, then just the same.

5. Hot Summer - 1/5
Nah. Boring as fuck.

6. Stand Up & B Strong - 2/5
Maybe it will grow on me in time but at the moment, after two listens, it's not my kind of thing.

7. Check The Record - 4/5
I really like it. It reminds me of Cybersingle. Only good.

8. Same Page, Different Book - 3/5
I neither like it nor dislike it. It's fine, I guess.

9. When She Comes - 5/5
One of my favourite songs from Phase 2. This version is probably even better. I wish he did more of this kind of stuff in later years. Dirty Prince is the best Prince.

10. 1010 (Rin Tin Tin) - 5/5
Love at first listen. Sounds fucking amazing on my speakers too. The kind of song that's worth investing in a decent sound system for.

11. Yes - 3/5
Yeah it's alright. Would rather less female vocalists and more Prince though.

12. One Day We Will All B Free - 4/5
In truth, I'd probably give it a 3 out of 5 at the moment. But I have a feeling that it will grow on me more and more.

Overall, a damn good album with some moments of excellence. One or two bumps along the way but much better than 20Ten. I'll never understand his thinking behind releasing 20Ten and leaving W2A in the vault. But it's a good sign that there's some great modern stuff left in the vault. Now let's hope the Estate actually release more of it instead of going back to releasing outtakes from the 80s.

My expectations were not high but I’m loving it. A lot of his later albums felt like he was either trying to be commercial or playing safe or it was just a collection of vault tracks thrown together.
.
W2A feels different. A bit like TRC without the JW stuff. It’s a semi concept album, sounds nice and organic and he has something to say.

Like most I’d prefer P on all vocals but I think the shared vocals work on the whole, especially on Stand Up And B Strong. That’s a real highlight for me
.
I’ve never been a fan of Shelby but credit where it’s due I think she’s sounds great on Running Game (Son Of A Slave Master)

You don’t think the album is perhaps missing a few ‘N-P-G’ chants or some stock sound effects that literally illustrate every lyric? You know - car beeps, clocks ticking, that sort of thing?

Yes, he missed a trick by not adding some rocket and firework sound effects at the end of 1000 Light Years From Here and record scratches on Check The Record.
.
Also a slight shame no 'put your hands up' from Shelby

falloff All no doubt deleted from the final mix by the Estate. Also missing: Vanity’s orgasmic squeals in When She Comes/pill container rattling in Stand Up and B Strong/ice cream van jingle in Hot Summer/pages turning in Same Book (or a book shutting at the end, Howe should have kept that in, it was obviously there)/dog barking in Rin Tin Tin (and gun firing when Lone Ranger is mentioned)

Or maybe a horse neighing when Lone Ranger is mentioned so that there are two animals in the chorus.

In 94 he would’ve added a horse trotting and used his Right The Wrong voice.

Very cohesive album in production and sound/lyrics, maybe one of the best for this in 2000's !

But a boring serious album like a lot of his albums in this era!
Just some cool songs but nothing oustanding....so iam not going to listen this album often !

Pleaz to the estate...serious vault albums or sessions from the 70/80's ...thanx ...this will be enough for me...at this stage I have more expectations for the D&P box set to come latter!

Just a suggestion - you could add the bell from one of those ‘Test Your Strength’ mallet machine funfair things. Although that might be a bit obtuse. Maybe a sample of Arnold from Commando? Or ‘Break ya goddam spine’ from Running Man? Obviously right up front in the mix after the knees bit.

Ok, what is the time stamp in the song for where these clicks appear? The one I got I can’t hear any issues with the song. No clicks to be heard…
