SOTT Deluxe Sales

UPDATE: It re-entered the Billboard 200 at #20.

Billboard will have final offical numbers on Monday but on the Hits Daily Double chart it enters at #26, with 17,672 copies sold and nearly 20k with sales/streaming combined (on pure sales it's #7). Assuming the majority of the sales were for the Super Deluxe (and not the two disc version) that's a solid chunk of change for the estate and bodes well for the future.

Better. I forget the exact final numbers but Rolling Stone said 1999 SDE did 12k. It re-entered the Billboard 200 at #45 (and that was with 14 Christmas albums ahead of it). So 1999 and SOTT were similar but SOTT did better, which is great considering it cost quite a bit more and is a less popular album. I think it was also easier to get...it took me nearly a week to get a copy of 1999 Super Deluxe.

Let's hope this equates to signalling to the Estate/Record Companies, that the more outtakes, the merrier. Bring it on, Parade Super Deluxe - 4 CDs of outtakes...

When I heard this, I was surprised given that 1999 was much moe commercially successful than SOTT on their respective original releases. Then I realized that it is the super fans that are buying the deluxe editions, and among that group SOTT has ever bit the regard as 1999 if not more so. In any case, I am please that the success of this release may lead to further deluxe releases. of similar quality.

From Duane Tudahl (last interview in french magazine Funku)

«Of course, I can't reveal the content of the next project, but the Prince Estate is working on something unexpected, surprising, profound and very complete. Prince has recorded so much music, and I think we'll be talking about these reissues for the next twenty or thirty years, if not more.»

Any guesses ?

1999 was a US success only, like I said last year.
Beside English speaking countries, 1999 the album and the singles are totally unknown.

Not that I'd be much interested in something like this - but perhaps a collection of songs from his last year in the studio? That'd be somewhat unexpected.

Maybe even earlier??? Perhaps the recent leak of "Neurotic Lover's Bedroom" is an indication that some early recordings are coming. "Nightingale" Remaster anyone? Ha ha okay those home recordings are never going to sound amazing but if there's a batch of songs at least as good sonically as "Neurotic Lover's Bedroom" (like "Make It Through The Storm" and "We Can Work It Out") then that would be surprsing and profound for sure.

I think there are a couple factors here. 1999 is indeed more commerically viable than Sign o' the Times: its songs have nearly double the Spotify streams as the songs on SOTT in total, despite there being 5 fewer. Of course, this is in part due to how massive "1999" and "Little Red Corvette" are, but still - 1999 is more commercial.

Sign o' the Times has the clout of being considered maybe his best album, though, and that matters (I'm personally on the 1999 train here). More than that, though, I think the estate learned from the 1999 release that there was greater demand than they may have anticipated - it was very hard to find copies for many people in the week after its release, and they've since issued a second pressing of it. I haven't heard the same thing with Sign o' the Times: there are still issues with late shipments and so forth, but not cases of being unable to get a copy somewhere.

In addition to this, I think some fans may have been a little more hesitant with 1999 because they may have had concerns regarding the quality of the audio due to issues with the Purple Rain deluxe edition. The great reception to the 1999 set may have built trust for shelling out for SOTT.

Whatever the case, it's great that SOTT is selling well! It deserves all the praise it is getting, IMO, and I hope it shows the estate that there is an appetite for sets as expansive as this.

Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

Has anyone smart worked out the ESTIMATED profit margins of these Deluxe huge releases? The vinyl alone must be extraordinarily profitable.

Also, suprised to see the Estate put the whole package on YT...must not cut into profits.

Well Put. 1999 served as a test case for their marketing model. And as a product, SOTT Deluxe is the best Box I own or have ever seen.

wow. forgive my ignorance but is that for the big box set deluxe or just the regular remastered CD & B-sides package?

If it's for the big deluxe set those are exceptional figures - especially if the European chart figures quoted on this thread are for the big deluxe set too. It should give the estate huge confidence going forwards.

You can't compare record sales in the 1980ies with todays market situation. Back then you had to sell MANY more records to enter the top 10 than nowadays. I wouldn't be surprised if the album sold better in the week were it peaked at #17 than last week.

We need total numbers, not chart positions.
