you have to make a playlist to showcase prince in the 2000s - what's on it?

@funkbabyandthebabysitters gave me persmission to steal his/her idea.

This is just 2000-2009, not the two-thousand-teens.

Way too much for the casual listener.
Who would care about Pearls b4the Swine or Live Like Jazz seriously
.
I would go with ten songs, which is already too much for someone who doesn't care to retain his attention.
.
Rainbow Children
Digital Garden

Last December

My memory of this era is quite inconsistent (though I like TRC as a whole) but off the top of my head....

Digital garden
Sensual everafter
She loves me 4 me
last december
empty room live
A case of u
ARBORETUM
Cinnamon girl
Reflection (totally forgot how much I liked this one)
Gamillah
3121
Lolita
Deliverance
Sunrise Sunset
Somewhere here on earth
Best of you (live)
77 beverley park
better with time
here
no more candy 4 u

I dont recall lotus flower, news or expectation or c note well at all except I remember thinking News was quite bad

I dont remember anything from chocolate invasion or slaughterhouse

Edited to add deliverance and sunrise sunset. I love slightly operatic, grandiose, gospelly anthemic prince.

Yes, my list is probably way too long. And yes, Pearls B4 the Swine is an obvious one to be cut. But I love Love Like Jazz. It's so different from anything else he'd ever done. I realize it sounds a bit like '70s lounge music, but I have positive associations with '70s lounge music, so it always brings a smile to my face.

Most of those albums you don't recall are understandable. News, Expection and C-Note were all instrumentals (expect Empty Room on C-Note). The Chocolate invasion and Slaughterhouse were, at best, forgettable -- a lot of generic songs Prince could have whipped out in his sleep.

But Lotusflow3r is remarkable album. Even if it's not your cup of tea, it's something that should surely stand out in your head. Dreamer is a super catchy classic. And Colonized Mind is brilliant. You should definitely take another listen.

Boom and Laydown just missed making my list.

I hate Compassion and Beginning Endlessly. Those two songs are two of my Least Favorite Songs of All Time.

Guess my votes managed to make your superlative lists...one way or another. lol

BTW, I agree with you about loving Love Like Jazz. On top of all everything else, I can't resist a song where Prince is comparing music and love making. I'd have to look around for the interview, but a band member said Prince advised that being a good live performer is like being a good lover. With this song, love all the lyrics about loving, music, improvisation, spontaneity, etc., etc,

You're right. My list did end in 2009. Redandblue suggested songs from 2010 and I responded to those suggestions without thinking. My attention was on the quality of the songs he/she proposed and it didn't occur to me that they're out of the time frame.

Apologies for my error! I lost track of the idea that these lists are based on release dates vs. basic tracking. Do get the importance of defining what is meant by a date for a song. There are multiple issues to include that basic trackings of songs obviously happen (sometimes years) before release dates. So when playing a "make your playlist" game, folks need to be on the same page re: the rules.

Also, for this question and the question over on the 90's thread, I've just been adding any IMO cool songs to what was already listed...so not putting any songs on my list that someone else has already mentioned.

All told, I haven't been answering the question. I'll say to myself what we say to our kids: read AND follow directions.

Again, apologies, and disregard my replies. Especially due to the larger error of just adding possible songs I'd consider to any songs people had already mentioned. That's not making the requested "playlist to showcase" the (range and/or quality) of what Prince released during given years.

This should maybe be expanded to the 2010s unless you guys think those 5/6 years have enough golden material.

IMO, Paradigm would be a good collaboration to feature. I do realize that George Clinton started work on this track many years before release.

Mad and Funky Design

Wanted to include these with suggestion for Exodus and Exodus-related songs on 90's thread, but wasn't sure about the timing, and did already mess up by putting 20ten album songs here on this thread.

If going by official release, I believe these belong here, in spite of being heard quite a lot during the 90's.

If Prince recorded unreleased music in 2016, we may assume some of it would have been released a few years after, surely touching the 2020 decade.
.
If the estate releases something unreleased for the last decade, we could picture this as a new decade for Prince tracks.
