The song reminds me a lot of Shuggie Otis done back then early 70 with the computer & Funky rythms (Big Prince Influence) & for the Big Guitar .......Eddie Hazel is all over the place !!

Lyrics....Nasty Prince......this is the kind of humour but more soft & cool that we will get few years later with The Time !!

Interesting how Prince was gifted by Owen Hussey with a drum machine in 1977 and whips up this hilarious funky little gem...and then doesn’t touch a drum machine again until 1981 with Private Joy.

That's not quite the case.

There's a drum machine used (in fact it sounds like it may be this same one) on his demo of "I Got Over It" - the song he gave to Valerie Carter.

It's not circulating (and I don't have it, but have heard it) so you'll have to take my word for it. But that seems to post-date this track somewhere between late 77 to early 79.

He also used the drum machine (I think it’s called Ace) for the original recording of “Wouldn’t U Love To Love Me” from 77 nod

Exactly what I said on FB, he drew strong influence from Sly Stone/Shuggie Otis for this. And if I’m reaching, I would say the guitar playing is also very much h reminiscent of Johnny Guitar Watson’s “Ain’t that a bitch”.

Cool. Nice way to test that drum computer. (Do we know what type it was?) The sound of the drum computer immediately brings back Sly around There's A Riot Going On, but much more sparsely with the other instruments, basically two guitars who do a very minimal groove, with Prince doing spoken word over it a la P-Funk (Wants To Get Funked Up).

Most likely the Roland Rhythm Arranger

..sharmone MF..!

I'd had it for some time. Wasn't allowed to share or leak it and I'm not quite sure how it came out, but I'm glad it's out for everyone to hear, it's a hell of a cool track: the first time I heard it was one of these moments where you feel bloody privileged biggrin

Do you have track 1

I thought it was released to be shared. What would have happened if you did share it?

There is no track 1. I reckon somebody altered it to make it look like they had more. Possibly somebody who "thinks" it came from a tape with just one other song

I am not aware of whatever "track 1" is.

What would have happened is what happens in these situations: 1/ I'd have pissed the people who entrusted me with it and 2/ I wouldn't be entrusted with more uncirculating material.

That's the thing, it's not that people necessarily enjoy keeping things for themselves, but you don't wanna betray your friends and you also don't wanna get a reputation as someone who cannot be trusted, so if the material isn't yours to leak, you don't. I mean don't get the wrong impression: I'm not a big gun with hundreds of uncirculating tapes that are mine to leak, just someone who is occasionally entrusted with a few things by some traders. When this happens to you, you're just grateful and you make sure not to fuck up nod

Damn this is awesome, definitely has a level of freakiness that seems to have been largely surpressed in his first two albums and only really emerged properly on Dirty Mind. Fascinating track, truly special that we're able to hear it.

Those things Prince(r.i.p.) found under his mother's bed sure had an erotic effect on him. His mind went places in sexuallty than even mine did at that age. What a GEM!

Listening again - I'm really enjoying the funk-punk elements to this song. There are some moments of Dirk-era Adam Ant guitar lines woven in here with all the Clinton/Collins. This is an absolute delight.

So you have other songs that are not circulating ?
I never thought you would be someone that keeps treasures like this and never tell about it. I thought you were the nice crusader who fights elite traders for hanging on on stuff like this. Keeps me wonder how many other gems you have.

yeahthat

I would add to that, that sometimes you can't share because literally only a few people have it. (Or only a few people you know of. Because no one can talk about having it, you're not sure if others do, but you can't risk mentioning it!) And if it leaks, it would be easy to trace it back to the source leaker. And then the person who shared it with you AND the original source are in trouble. Then no music for anyone. It's a double edged sword. You want to share it with other Prince fans because the song/s is/are great and you want to talk about them with other people who will be as excited as you are, but you don't dare risk it because you were entrusted with something very special. In some cases the song isn't even listed on PrinceVault (yet) so you can't even talk about it in the abstract.
