I am not aware of whatever "track 1" is.

What would have happened is what happens in these situations: 1/ I'd have pissed the people who entrusted me with it and 2/ I wouldn't be entrusted with more uncirculating material.

That's the thing, it's not that people necessarily enjoy keeping things for themselves, but you don't wanna betray your friends and you also don't wanna get a reputation as someone who cannot be trusted, so if the material isn't yours to leak, you don't. I mean don't get the wrong impression: I'm not a big gun with hundreds of uncirculating tapes that are mine to leak, just someone who is occasionally entrusted with a few things by some traders. When this happens to you, you're just grateful and you make sure not to fuck up nod

yeahthat

I would add to that, that sometimes you can't share because literally only a few people have it. And if it leaks, it would be easy to trace it back to the source leaker. And then the person who shared it with you AND the original source are in trouble. Then no music for anyone. It's a double edged sword. You want to share it with other Prince fans because the song/s is/are great and you want to talk about them with other people who will be as excited as you are, but you don't dare risk it because you were entrusted with something very special. In some cases the song, isn't even listed on PrinceVault (yet) so you can't even talk about it in the abstract.

.
Exactly.
.

I don't know why it seems to be so hard for some people to understand, but holding onto material someone trusted you with is not about ego or wanting to be an "elite trader" (whatever that might mean) – it's about integrity and being a man of your word. Whenever I gave my word to someone that I won't share what they gave me they can be sure I meant it. It's also business ethics 101: when you're a professional working with artists, obviously you'll have access to a lot of stuff, but you don't start talking about it, won't brag about it, whether you had to sign an NDA or not. It takes a lot of time to build trust with someone but it only takes one wrong move to lose it forever.

Why was it necessary to divulge having special access to that track?

I can't believe this stuff is going on.

All very noble but doesn't really apply in this case. The track was supposed to be shared freely but instead it was passed/traded around a select few with conditions. Somebody down the line would have known it was meant to be shared freely, there is no excuse for that

I was given a video of a set of shows and videos that was not at that time leaked by someone that worked at PP. (he is in the videos so yes I am sure). And he said "just do not share them, they could be traced back to me." So there was no way I would share them...

So it is not really being an elites to me it comes off to me as kind of a relief. "I can finally talk about this!"

someone I know said that they shared a song and the person they shared it with sold it to a bootlegger and it is now leaked. And that is why some with these rare gems will not share them.

I think that is how I would feel. I've heard some songs (but don't have them) that I think will never be released. I understand why (they're just Prince being silly and not anything mindblowing musically speaking) but it still makes me sad to think I will probably never hear them again. And then there are other songs I think are likely to be released (or leaked) at some point so I wait.

Hey you! Get out on this dance floor!

I totally get the secrecy especially when it can point back to you. Curious what shows did you receive, after reading your post it sounds like these shows have been leaked..

And here I was unfairly thinking Questlove was the only one who was cliquish & elitist for complaining that people get to hear the outtakes from the special edition of ‘1999’, turned out it’s a whole culture out there. I’m not faulting the ones who are honouring their end of the bargain to withhold information since word is bond & all that, they don’t owe anyone anything at the end of the day. But it’s a shame that this culture started out initially to keep the majority of fans from enjoying what’s not theirs to begin with sans for a select few, and there’s no other incentive but pettiness & selfishness.

One method to gain status and get elite traders to trade with you was to let it be known what tapes you had, to get included as inner circle.

What you described, being told "You can have a copy, but don't trade it" or some version of that was very common. What would happen is people with masters, or first generation copies of rare stuff would entrust people, or talk about what they had. It was still currency you could have used to gain credibility and use that clout to make other trades.

They're just stolen tracks and being hoarded and shared very selectively. That's the common sense approach one generation removed from the leaker commiting the theft. And you had the common sense not to talk about something other people couldn't hear, and it wasn't in your bones to want to brag apparently, whereas there are people who live for that. The reputation for having the material is more important than the material, some of which they would never listen to all the way through anyways.

If there is a track 1, I’d hazard a guess it is either, “I Like What You’re Doing” or “Hello, My Love”, from the same 1977 Loring Park Rehearsal Room session.

Would anyone in the know like to comment, or even would Owen Husney be able to add anything?
There may or may not be something coming!
