I think the main issue here is production.

The song is nice and the guitar is great but the production on the vocal is bad.

I thought by now Prince had perfected the 'Camille' sound. Clearly with this track 'Camille' was set to the 'Chipmunk' setting.

If this was pitched down to be 'Camille' then this track would be perfect.

In fact, I'll probbaly do that myself.

It's good, but not an outstanding track. I can see why it was dropped from any release. He was doing so many better tracks at the time!

Maybe it was pitched sooo high to sound more like a girl (even more than Camille)... I thought it was Jill Jones at first. Maybe the song was intended for a singer like that?

I've never liked the snippet, or been interested in hearing more, and now that I have I like it even less. I was going to come here to discuss it, but I'm not interested in being accused of trolling because I have an unpopular opinion so instead I guess I'll just congratulate those that finally have their holy grail while I eagerly await Rebirth Of The Flesh & In A Large Room With No Light in better quality than the circulating boots and hope some of the tracks I've never heard are awesome.

I guess I haven't paid too much attention to the snippet of "Cosmic day" over the years as I searched my Prince hard drive and see I have 3 different lenghth snippets of the song. One clocks in at 1:04, another at 1:50 and the one on Blast From the Past at 3:09. The 3:09 version fades before the second part of the song and would be a good "radio edit" for the single if they wanted to go there. Anyway, I stand by my original thought, love the guitar but not the voice.

It makes me happy to hear that some people enjoy it. We're all different and I try to see if I can understand why I don't. And that's cool.
To me the music is cheesy and pedestrian, the lyrics dreadful. The production makes it feel like it was song he was crafting for someone else to sing. And we know that if that was the case, ther artists took a hard pass on it.
We are a diverse bunch here, and I'm glad we get to share our opinions and criticism on art. That's healthy.
trying to silence those who disagree with your own opinions is not, especially when it comes to something as subjective as art .There is no right or wrong on how art moves you ..or doesn't.

If someone says a song sucks that I like i'm gonna disagree with them. If someone says they don't like a song that I like and here's why i'm probably gonna be interested. The Camille voice is iconic! If Prince had intended this to be Camile then I feel there would have been no ambiguity about doing that!

What an interesting track. Some epic guitar work. Sounds like a demo. What a genius to keep this in your back pocket. Oodles of talent.

Great rocker! Would have fit well on SoTT and been a great guitar-based live number. Maybe he chose ICNTTPOYM over it?

I'd heard the roughly 3 minute version on BFTP (in pretty decent quality) but this new one . . . I was overjoyed hearing it in better quality and clocking in at almost 6 minutes?!

I listened through headphones, pretty much grinning ear to ear the whole time.

Brings up so many questions . . . did Prince still have the Camille mindset when he recorded this, maybe (like some have said) he wanted to see how far he could push it? Camille still sounded like him but altered -- this sounds like a woman singing it.

Either way, it's quirky and fun and full of energy. Would have worked well on the 3-disc album had that panned out, or even as a B-side.

Also - it reminds me a bit of a sped-up "Rush Hour" by Jane Wiedlin.

Agreed! LOVE the track - incredible. I think it sounds a little bootleggy though and expected a much fuller sound. I listened on the Spotify app via Amazon Firestick and connected to a nice system. Maybe I'll try Tidal see if it sounds less thin.

The first time I listened to Cosmic Day I was not convinced I would listen to it often. I was even a bit disappointed after hearing the full version. Today the song strangly enough has been in my head the whole day like an earworm.

it's, personally, a really great tune. one of my favorite things about it are the small hints to the ideas swirling in his head around this time. the guitar breakdown sounds so similar to the one in "ICNTTPOYM," almost expect to hear the dueling solos right as Prince starts his whisper poem.

I can also see why some folks don't like it, it's Prince the Maximalist, kooky, weird, loud, almost annoying. I think it works in the song's favor though, like in "All My Dreams," or "Good Love," or "3 Chains O Gold," or "Strays of the World,"

Yes it does. And, TIDAL is streaming it in what they call "Master" quality, so it's much better sounding then say Spotify, or Amazon...

It's the backing vocals that just don't sound Camille to me. Sounds like it could realistically be a woman, like you could sing over it and it would be well masked.

That's him doing background right, I haven't lost my mind? It's a different voice than Camille, like he's processing it to really sound female instead. Maybe just seeing how far he could take it.

He didn't do that with Manic Monday or Shiela, or Vanity demos, but maybe he did for Dale or ...I don't know, Taja Sevelle? A lot of the guide tracks are toned down but some of those final versions are still restrained in terms of passion too. "Never be another fool" goes all out with passion.

I was trying to listen to the background vocals and for a moment I wondered if maybe it's Sussannah with her vocals pitched up. Would've been cute if they conjured up this track together. Sussanah was still involved with him at the time I believe (maybe I am wrong). If so, maybe a valid reason for him to not release it in the end – maybe too painful memory.

Literally have been on my headphones with the track on repeat since it came out yesterday.

Every listen I hear something else. Love the percussion flurries in the spoken section, little drum ruffle, little whisper. Dancing through the house on this track – literally feel like im in heaven. My husband thinks I am nuts.

Really needed this with all the shit going on in the world.

Was also thinking had this been released back in the day, I am sure people would've thought he absolutelty lost his mind – but in time I think it could've been a hit. Great summer song speeding down the highway with the windows open.

For the haters, if you haven't listen to it on headphones yet – try it. Can't believe anyone could sit still on this track. If you don't like the vocals focus on the shredding guitar parts – simply sublime.

This is the Prince I always loved – the weird ass tracks he'd come up with – belongs in the canon of Bob George, Crystal Ball, All My Dreams, Lovesexy, There's Other's Here With Us, etc. Just fantastically wack.

That's a great point. I was thinking about this last night. I think this track's appeal is for those who enjoy that Prince. The Prince that some fans aren't ready or conditioned to process mentally and emotionally. I mean, I LOVE (and I mean LOVE) "Adonis & Bathsheba". It's the one cut next to "Cosmic Day" that I have been most looking forward to owning from this set. I love it more then "Purple Rain", or "Erotic City", or "Raspberry Beret". That's not saying those aren't GREAT songs, because they absoluetely are. But the tracks that are different. The songs that don't sound at all like ANYBODY else could have written them. Those are the ones that touch me inside. "Cosmic Day" sounds like NOTHING I've ever heard...at least from anyone other then Prince. I guess that's why I'm so protective of it. Top 10 all-time Prince songs IMO...

I predicted this release? Cosmic love. Critics will lose it.

For me, it was 5 and a half minutes of confusion.

Perhaps it'll work better in context next month.

After reading a bunch of the comments on here, I just got a chance to hear it on my lunch break. I liked it on the first lisen, but was underwhelmed. It was stuck in my head when I got out of the car and my brain morphed it into the Reading Rainbow theme (just me? )

I listened to it again inside, and for some reason I liked it better on my phone than coming from my car speakers. Upon second listen, it clicked. It would've fit well with some of the Dream Factory stuff. Love the guitar, I don't mind the voice, I still hear Reading Rainbow, but I love it nontheless!

Love it! very unique and creative as only Prince could make.
