I agree regarding "Lemon Crush" I like the groove, but those lyrics are really dumb.It feels like total filler and doesn't 'fit' the album at all.

if you listen to Batman, and you listen to 'Trust'and 'Lemon Crush' in order back to back, all the way through without skipping, pausing, or fast forwarding, you are either the truest of true Prince fans, or you were drunk or sleep or both...that may be the two worst songs back to back on any Prince LP ever conceived...'Lemon Crush' is comically bad.. "if im workin... at my jobbah im the victim ... youre the robber..." smh |

RANKED, from absolute worst of the worst to just kinda bad.
01. "Free" : People just like the message/lyrics. Remove those sentiments and stand aghast at what plays before you. This song makes the slab of steaming limburger that is "Arms of Orion" sound like "When Doves Cry" in comparison. 02. "Delirious" : It's like "Jack U Off" if the synth was super annoying and jacked off all over the song instead of in short tasteful bursts. 03. "God(Vocal)" : Caterwauling that would make Yoko Ono blush. 04. "Trust" : Just crap. I'm convinced this was bad on purpose because he was pissed at Burton/WB rejecting "200 Balloons". 05. "Positivity" : See everyone's "Free" rationalization, add annoying superfluous layers and exteeeeennnnd the mix. 06. "Lovesexy" : All these Lovesexy songs have too much going on honestly... way way too much. Make it stop. There might very well have been a good song here at some point, buried underneath 65 layers of multitrack. 07. "All the Critics Love U in New York" : Meandering. 1999 already won everybody by this point in the sequence, so it usually falls through the cracks... not on my watch, bub. 08. "Love or Money" : I've never heard the edit, I'd probably prefer the edit. This goes nowhere... for a long long time. 09. "Girls & Boys" : I'm probably just bias against the ducksynth quacking over every nook and cranny of this one (see: "Delirious" for similar annoying perpetual synth). 10. "Baby I'm a Star" : This was always the one glaring blight on maybe the most accessible album of all time, thankfully it's short. I do get why it's for others--but it's just not for me.

This is almost comedy. Lovesexy and Girls & Boys are in my top 10. All the other songs apart from Trust and God are brilliant. INCLUDING FREE |

You guys are killin me...all are faves in my book!
Its hard to really pick a worst of from that time period...Temptation, is one but thats only because of the ending. The actual song is killer.
Arms of Orion is one of those that surprised me as its so conventional...but I don't hate it...and fits well on Batman.
Jack U Off is a little cringeworthy and has been replaced by Gotta Stop on my Controversy playlist. SO I guess I will say that one is his my least favorite of that brilliant time period.
Now the 90s...early 90s in particular...my list would be much longer.

i'd say "Lemon Crush" and "Arms of Orion" are the only album tracks that I can't ever get into from the 80s. On the b-side of things, "God (Vocal)" is a tough go. The instrumental 12" is amazing though. I don't really ever reach for "Another Lonely Christmas" either. Never understood the love for that song.
Temptation is a great song. People tend to dismiss it due to its ending, but until then it is incredibly funky. |

*"Temptation"---I'm one of the few fans who wasn't crazy about ATWIAD.This particular song is terrible.
*"Tamborine"----he uses the excellent "She's Always In My Hair" as a B-side,but puts this ridiculous song on the album, smh
*"Hot Thing"----this song isn't terrible,but I just think it's mediocre.The lyrics are very weak.
*"Dance On"----the only song on Lovesexy that I don't like.
*"Lemon Crush"---great groove, but like "Hot Thing",it suffers from weak lyrics and I think it sounds very out of place on the Batdance album.
Which lyric did you not like, hot or thing ? |

There are very few I don’t like:
“So Blue”: I’m not sure I dislike this one as much as I am never able to remember it after it plays. I must have heard it 100+ times now and I still struggle to recall any details of it. It is amazingly unmemorable for me.
“Still Waiting”: Prince had his fair share of stuff that could be classified as somewhat schmaltzy or cheesy, but this doesn’t have the usual Prince magic to redeem it.
“Around the World in a Day”: Sacrilege, I know, but I just have always found it jarring.
And that’s it! All the other singles, album cuts, B-sides, and unearthed vault tracks from that time are songs I genuinely like! Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you! |

Surprised Do U Lie? hasn't been mentioned yet.
That is one stupid-ass song. Thin, wobbly melody, wack instrumentation (an accordion?! come on Prince, you might as well don a ring of onions round your neck and put on mime make-up, sacre bleu), and dreadful lyrics. Complete lead balloon in the middle of a wonderful album. SKIP! PIPS! Eurgh... |

Great first spot man! Seriously, fuck Free. What I've heard even Village Voice ranked 1999 higher than Thriller in 1982. Never mind 1983 and the music videos which accelerated Thriller beyond. At the time this album was just waaaaaay ahead of it's time. How the hell do you make a decision then to put Free on that album instead of Moonbeam Levels or How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore. And don't give me that "it wouldn't fit the musical structure of the album". Free isn't advanced in style or tone compared to the other songs on 1999. I have mad hate for that song. Chris Rock said that Thriller had one major flaud; The Girl Is Mine. Well, give me that 10/10 times over Free.
Chris rock said there were two awful songs on MJ's Thriller " baby be mine" & " the lady in my life" Purple Rain had no weak songs at all.. i'd take it any day over Thriller
Well he is utterly wrong, specially regarding TLIML which is just great. |

I like Parade for the most part, but this is the album where Prince officially lost the Purple Rain crowd. He had changed his sound so rapidly and many people didn't know what to make of it.
I like "Do U Lie",especially the bridge ("when I need someone to talk to.....you're not around",etc). It's a cool song, but I can see why some didn't like it. |

Damn, Parade is getting hit hard in this thread!
It's true that Parade was totally different than what fans of Purple Rain expected.
But it's got some really good songs!
Besides Kiss of course, Girls & Boys and Life Can Be So Nice and AnotherLover are really good.
I Wonder U is like a minute and a half, so it doesn't really count IMO.
Same thing with Venus, it's an instrumental less than 2 minutes.
Really the only songs I don't care for are the first songs on each side: Mountains and Parade. "Never let nasty stalkers disrespect you. They start shit, you finish it. Go down to their level, that's the only way they'll understand. You have to handle things yourself." |

I think as long as there was Linn drum and screams, the Purple Rain crowd could find something in it.
The Controversy and 1999 crowd on the other hand....
I thought "Mountains" was a pleaser. |
