I’m surprised to see “Batdance” on some of these lists. That song is very clever, edgy and very unique! No other artist could have created a movie song like that. The way he changes the groove midway through is sheer brilliance.

Mad hate for Temptation on here, but it fits so well in Prince’s canon. I don’t know about “worst,” but despite all the polarizing tracks that won me over eventually, 4 the Tears in Your Eyes and Arms of Orion remain my least favourite from this period.

Ok you made me do it.

Essentially taking a track from each album with the right to break the rules.

My love is forever (I still like this song. It pains me to do this, For You is one of the best sequenced albums in Prince's career and I believe it flows and kisses with one synonymous motion)

Still Waiting (dishonorable mention with you and a couple of other tracks a really mixed album)

Gotta broken heart again (Still a solid tune)

Ronnie talk 2 Russia (a slight song, so I had to name and shame it. I do like it ok though)

Delirious (Never a fave, but I don't mind a live version, just be thankful I didn't mention FREE)

I would die 4 u (I love this song, Purple Rain is loaded I had to mention a song I do this under EXTREME protest)

The Ladder (and this is a grand song, just the bottom of a solid album, the live version kicks ass)

I wonder U (sorry I wonder u, I still like ya).

Forever in my life (because the album version is nothing compared to the live versions in the concert film etc, I almost mentioned U Got the Look which I now like more than I have ever done (slow burn)

Dead on it (not officially released till later but hey)

Escape (I just like Lovesexy a lot and it is one track after all lol)

Scandalous album version(because the scandalous sex suite versions make this album track obsolete, and confession I like Insatiable better because of the chords. Arms of Orion lives to fight another day)

That was painful are you happy now. Note I took a track each year so I would die 4 u would never appear normally.

In my opinion he didnt make any bad songs in this period. Maybe "Miss Understood" but this period of song writing was consistently brilliant for himself and others.

You are correct. It is very much so.

I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.

Yeah, well, I guess that's why Prince never made a James Bond theme song. Big and schmaltzy and Prince just doesn't go together and it's a shame that he even tried. Just imagine if Dance With the Devil had been the third track... That would have fit the mood perfectly. But maybe he didn't want to make the album too dark because it was, after all, the soundtrack of a movie, so you're right about that. But a song so full of clichés wasn't what you'd expect from a man who was known for always trying something new. [Edited 3/12/20 13:52pm]

His unrelenting fear of being "too dark" has to be my biggest irritation of his career 1978-1989. Because you wouldn't want the soundtrack to Tim Burton's Batman, you know, "The Dark Knight," an adaptation going out of its way to remove all the candy-colored brightness of the 60s take and instead re-envision the character as gothic as possible, you wouldn't want that to be "too dark."

Better instead to recycle the rainbow pep of the 60s theme song riff the movie is trying to make everyone forget and make a techno dance remix out if it. Now that's respectful of Tim Burton's vision, the king of dark gothic cinema.

I've been saying on the Org for nearly a decade that Tambourine is one of his worst songs!

MIR's list is nearly identical to mine, except I also have Condition of the Heart near the top.

"Ronnie Talk to Russia" I loathed as a teen but I gotta say I love it as an adult.... I really don't even quite understand why I flip-flopped on that. I used to really dislike "Tambourine" as well but now I get why people love that.

RANKED, from absolute worst of the worst to just kinda bad.

01. "Free"
: People just like the message/lyrics. Remove those sentiments and stand aghast at what plays before you. This song makes the slab of steaming limburger that is "Arms of Orion" sound like "When Doves Cry" in comparison.
02. "Delirious" : It's like "Jack U Off" if the synth was super annoying and jacked off all over the song instead of in short tasteful bursts.
03. "God(Vocal)" : Caterwauling that would make Yoko Ono blush.
04. "Trust" : Just crap. I'm convinced this was bad on purpose because he was pissed at Burton/WB rejecting "200 Balloons".
05. "Positivity" : See everyone's "Free" rationalization, add annoying superfluous layers and exteeeeennnnd the mix.
06. "Lovesexy" : All these Lovesexy songs have too much going on honestly... way way too much. Make it stop. There might very well have been a good song here at some point, buried underneath 65 layers of multitrack.
07. "All the Critics Love U in New York" : Meandering. 1999 already won everybody by this point in the sequence, so it usually falls through the cracks... not on my watch, bub.
08. "Love or Money" : I've never heard the edit, I'd probably prefer the edit. This goes nowhere... for a long long time.
09. "Girls & Boys" : I'm probably just bias against the ducksynth quacking over every nook and cranny of this one (see: "Delirious" for similar annoying perpetual synth).
10. "Baby I'm a Star" : This was always the one glaring blight on maybe the most accessible album of all time, thankfully it's short. I do get why it's for others--but it's just not for me.

I like Temptation. Yes it has cheesy dialogue and is a turnoff for those opposed to anything religious-themed, but I don't believe in throwing away the baby with the bathwater.

Ronnie is a novelty song, nothing more than a political statement used as an album filler.

If the thread topic included songs through 2010, Purple & Gold would win hands down as his worst. lol

I agree that the coda to Temptation is a chore, but the song itself is good. If anything doesn't really do it for me on ATWIAD, it's The Ladder. There's nothing wrong with it, but it's never had much of an impact on me. Couldn't say why.

The lyrics to Still Waiting are pathetic. That is to say, Prince deliberately cuts a pathetic figure on songs like When U Were Mine, Gotta Broken Heart Again, Bambi and Why U Wanna Treat Me So Bad?, but all of those songs have lyrics that are plausible, or could at least be taken as outbursts born of jealousy and frustration. But in the bizarrely saccharine Still Waiting, Prince's character (I hope and assume that the song wasn't overly autobiographical) hunts for a fetishised version of "love" like it were a Pokémon, and unimpressively declares that he cries about it all night, every night. It's both unbelievable and slightly unnerving. The worst thing is that it sticks in the mind 'cause it's damn catchy.

I think I woiuld say several of the songs on For You and Prince and one each on Lovesexy and Batman would (if I needed to) be cut from a play list...

Great first spot man! Seriously, fuck Free. What I've heard even Village Voice ranked 1999 higher than Thriller in 1982. Never mind 1983 and the music videos which accelerated Thriller beyond. At the time this album was just waaaaay ahead of it's time. How the hell do you make a decision then to put Free on that album instead of Moonbeam Levels or How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore. And don't give me that "it wouldn't fit the musical structure of the album". Free isn't advanced in style or tone compared to the other songs on 1999. I have mad hate for that song. Chris Rock said that Thriller had one major flaud; The Girl Is Mine. Well, give me that 10/10 times over Free.

You guys are killin me...all are faves in my book!

Its hard to really pick a worst of from that time period...Temptation, is one but thats only because of the ending. The actual song is killer.

Arms of Orion is one of those that surprised me as its so conventional...but I don't hate it...and fits well on Batman.

Jack U Off is a little cringeworthy and has been replaced by Gotta Stop on my Controversy playlist. SO I guess I will say that one is his my least favorite of that brilliant time period.

Now the 90s...early 90s in particular...my list would be much longer.

[Edited 3/12/20 12:43pm]

i 100 agree with you
Prince from 1980 to 87 didn't have any worst songs album wise

a few week songs on " for you " & " Batman" but that's it

from 1990 onwards he had a lot of songs that were weak & on the other hand had
good songs at times. i've always liked " Gotta Stop"
but i agree " Jack u off" is just ok

good points/good list

i just dont agree on these:

Lovesexy (masterpiece)
All The Critics Love U In NY (meandering?nah...funky?yeah)
Girls & Boys (Lol..i dont like the well described "ducksynth quacking" either, but the song is fire)

i never liked Baby Im A Star, either...at all...corny lyrics, basic beat and groove...

"..baby but i are, im a star.."

if you listen to Batman, and you listen to 'Trust'and 'Lemon Crush' in order back to back, all the way through without skipping, pausing, or fast forwarding, you are either the truest of true Prince fans, or you were drunk or sleep or both...that may be the two worst songs back to back on any Prince LP ever conceived...'Lemon Crush' is comically bad..
