Well, I am very disappointed. Had my first listen, ‘Sex Shooter’ does not grab me at all. If you are not pulled in right away, you don’t take the ride. The Vanity version that starts with 1 sound getting louder with Prince guitar riffs here and there.... heck free on utube Vanity best version is better than how this sounds on Spotify. ‘Glamorous Life’ glorious Jazz mayhem already have, again not pulled in, and, ‘Jungle Love’ which I thought for old times sake I am easy, but, you know what? The original recorded track/s are better. Sorry. My review.

That is a rather strange way of listening to music lol I can't imagine judging an entire collection based on one listen of the first track only

There's a new interview with Michael Howe published @ https://www.heraldsun.com...893ef8083f (also reprinted here: https://thewest.com.au/en...893ef8083f ). However, both of those links are behind paywalls and are available only to subscribers. . Would be nice if anybody could provide us with the text of that article. © Bart Van Hemelen

. In such case it would have been perceived as more blunt by the Bart-like-critics. . Also, this millennial-like way of communicating is more for younger age groups. . . . . . . .

So from reading this interview it looks like they're sticking with the one release per year schedule. So the earlier rumours about 1999 Deluxe at Christmas seem to have been false. The wait between Piano & A Microphone and Originals felt painfully long and it looks like there'll be an equally long wait until the next one.

. Sorry, but P&M is far too flimsy. Especially considering that it was basically an official release of something that was widely bootlegged decades ago. © Bart Van Hemelen

. But they did it in style: a digipack versus a jewel case for the bootleg(s). Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

Even worse: Bol.com lists a digipak for P&M (Soort verpakking Digipack) but omits this detail for Originals. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

Now let's get this thread back to proper discussion about the album and none of this Bart pedantry bullshit. I posted my own thread because it looked like this thread was going nowhere but as the mods have locked it will repost here. Please only respond if you have actually read my words and have something useful to add/comment on. I particularly want to hear if any sound experts here agree on some of my points esp. with regards to dating of WYLTLM and the later addition of echoey effects on his vocals throughout the album.
ODD 'ORIGINALS' CHOICES ON ORIGINALS?! Liner notes dating correct?! Thoughts... I can't help noticing that many of the so called 'originals' were not the original versions at all and often not the best versions either (just like in the PR Deluxe they used an inferior version of The Dance Electric)
Sex Shooter for example - this was very close sounding to the 1984 released version and not the 1982 original version he originally did for Vanity which sounds quite different. (I already posted a link to this earlier version with Brenda and Susan on backing a while back, here it is:(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPqOfMVEA-A). I also felt his vocals were not loud enough in the mix. I was half expecting him to sing this in a more deep, slow, sensual voice, would have fit better but that's by the by!
100MPH - don't believe this is the best version I've heard.
Holly Rock - Very cool but why oh why did they leave the saxophone off this version? This is what made the song! What's odd is they (thankfully) kept the saxophone on Dear Michaelangelo and The Glamorous Life, so why not use it here? Could it be they are not using his most completed version of the song? Or just cobbled it together somehow? Seems rather inconsistent to me, especially as they were presumably recorded around the same time?
Baby You're A Trip - was delighted on first listen they used Prince's original vocals but was shocked to hear the addition of Jill's backing vocals rather than Prince's which were much more passionate and far superior IMO! Much as i liked her later 1987 version too, her vocals do not really fit here, they sound too nonchalent and lack passion which seems an odd counter balance to Prince' extremely passionate performance. As this is to me one of his best vocals EVER this detracts from it, is a disappointment to me. Maybe i'll get used to it later but it rankles knowing there is a better 'original' out there and they didn't use it. They didn't use Sheila's vocals on the songs he gave to her, so why use Jill's unless she wrote to them insisting on it?!
Love Thy Will Be Done - this sounds to me pretty much identical to the bootlegged version, as if it has been sourced from the bootleg rather than the master? They did this in PR Deluxe with some songs (Velvet Kitty Kat), here too? Considering it was from 1991 I thought the sound would be better.
Wouldn't You Love To Love Me - not sure if i'm right here but it sounds to me like this version was taken from the Rebels sessions in 79/80 rather than from 1981 as listed in the liner notes. Could it just be its listed as '81 as he reworked it or added something on top of the basic tracks then? Even the vocal style in parts is similar to what he was doing in 1979 on It's Gonna Be Lonely, it has the raw funk and style that would fit what would come out of those sessions. I also am aware there are earlier 'original' versions of this song too, but have to say in this case i'm glad they used this version as it rocks and is very catchy!
Nothing Compares 2 U - Again not the best version IMO, differs slightly from what was released last year it seems.
I also noticed that the vocals of these songs seem to have been given the addition of a slight echoey effect which I don't recall in the original bootlegged versions. It seems to be throughout the album, perhaps they added this to make it seem more 'album like' or more consistent? If so, i'd rather they hadn't and had just left them as he intended.
Apart from this they chose well with most of the other songs. Anyhow there's my 2 cents but think it would help in they would be more exhaustive in finding the 'best' or pure original versions of a particular song out there rather than what seems to come to hand easily as it seems sometimes!
Although this in interesting, I feel that these really were demo guide vocals and he would never have intended them for release. I think it would be better for the estate now to focus on releasing the fully completed versions of the hundreds of songs in the vault that require no tinkering to the content (aside from a remaster).
