Just finished listening to the Originals album a few times. What a gem. I love Sex shooter, Jungle Love, Manic Monday, Glamorous Life, Love Thy Will be done. Even the other songs. I don't think it's fair to compare them to the versions that other people did once P gave them these tracks.

What is amazing to me is that Prince developed these from his imagination with no one guiding him. He developed amazing fantasy world full of funk, lust and melodies that are incredibly appealing. It's his vast range of styles that this album showcases.

I am so glad the Estate put this compilation together. I hope more comes out. Can't wait. This album also shows how generous and prolific he was.

"A Strange Way of Saying I Love You" if written and sung with sincerity could be simply and beautiful!

A perfect apology to Lisa.

Hopefully we shall hear this one day!

I love the "Orignals" album - pretty much every song (maybe except "You're My Love" which is sweet but odd sounding from the non-conventional P). Favourites would be "Sex Shooter", "Holly Rock" and "Dear Michaelangelo" with "Noon Rendezvous" & "Make-Up" a very close second! I find the concept of "songs Prince wrote for others" fun and refreshing in the sense that with Prince's vocals some of these songs almost sound new to me. Also some of the playing, in particular the funk groove of "Holly Rock" and the guitar work in "100 MPH", is incredible. In regards to the albums sonics and issues related to the re-mixing of Prince's work (raised and discussed very intelligently in this Forum) I think it remains something of personal choice. I like hearing the tracks louder and with a nod to today's bottom end - easier to pump in my car. Having said that I hope with the deluxe re-packages (hopefully "1999" very soon and "Dream Factory" one day pls) they maintain Prince's original mixes and just master in the highest of quality. That's all those amazing albums and outtakes need.

I'm still loving this record, and a lot of my friends who haven't listened to Prince in years are loving it as well.

One thing that struck me about it the other day is that it's interesting to hear a Prince album from this period (early-mid 80s, minus LTWBD) that sounds like all hit singles. His albums from this time were usually a couple of radio friendly songs, and then a larger chunk of inventive, experimental tunes to really sink your teeth into. So, hearing an all-singles approach to an album, especially from this period, feels really unique, and kind of charming.

Hmm,

I've still not listened to this fully yet - probably not even listened to more than a couple of tracks...

just not been in much of a Prince mood lately, I guess... I'll get to it and am looking forward to hearing when the mood strikes me...

I've been too busy devouring the latest Dylan box set, the 1975 Live Recordings, I guess... as well as listening to a lot of jazz and fusion...

Love that Originals is there waiting for me, though...

The good news: the deluxe booklet does look fantastic, with plenty of photos of the actual tapes and handwritten lyrics etc.: https://www.youtube.com/w...Txz4Yl6OcM Love that the CD is housed in a photo of the master tape of "Manic Monday".

.

But still, it's a lot of money for something that really should have been included with all editions.

At least the estate is starting to go in the right direction with packaging, booklets, and liner notes such as the deluxe release. But like Bart said, they should be doing this for all the releases, doesn't really make sense to re release many packaged versions and only one version for a higher price point to have all these extras.

Once Walmart pay all their employees living wages (including having at least 50% of their employees working 38 hours weekly-Now they consider full time as 28 hours!) and Costco like health care then be proud. Until then they should be bioycotted.

I already paid for the CD, I don’t feel like paying for the vinyl now. The estate is horrible at not only marketing but doing this: making the packaging for the CD complete and total shit, and for the vinyl packaging it very nicely.

Now if they would have just done this for the release date and actually marketed right (“this edition includes cool liner notes and etc etc”) then me and a bunch of others may have been interested. But hell if I am now. They lost money because of this also.

How about fair wages and healthcare from the most profitable retailer in the USA. The second most profitable one, Costco does. So, it's a choice do be fair to your workers. Costco still is very profitable. It's about ethics for your fellow humanbeings that support you in your success. Ethics and how you treat people does matter.

I thought this was a good interview. He seems like a sincere and humbled man, and I think he's trying to do his very best.

I found it interesting that he seemed to say that the Purple Rain Deluxe unreleased tracks were actually from Prince's vault tapes. Wasn't it confirmed by many sources that these songs were sourced from Warner cassettes? If they are indeed Prince vault sourced, why do they sound inferior to Originals?

Appearances do not count.

The results count.

And the results are not overwhelming, to put it mildly.

I wonder what the MiC had to say to Michael.

Did they even notice?

I totally agree with you!! Off topic, I know. I'm from Europe, but I always wondered how it is possible that colleagues/associates from the States needed three jobs to make a living.

Howe says right in the interview that the first thing he got to work on was Nothing Compares 2 U. But, he also says he was involved in Purple Rain Deluxe. Weird.

Picked up the regular 180gm vinyl today.

Passing on the deluxe, protesting the exclusivity of the book AND I'm anal ( biggrin ) about my collection. I want a regular CD on the CD shelf and a regular LP on the record shelf. I don't like the deluxe packagings at all.

The good news is the vinyl sounds MUCH better than the CD & digital versions (yeah, I know CDs ARE digital, thanks). So happy to enjoy this without all the loudness mastering issues that distorted some of the tracks on the CD.
