The fans haven't had closure at all. Zappa's Universe was a brilliant tribute to FZ and he was actually still alive. Oct 13 will give them plenty of time to get it right. The world's problems like climate change can only be solved through strategic long-term thinking, not expediency. In other words all the govts. need sacking!

If the hoodies and goodie bags were given out to fans at a public memorial it would be different, but to those who knew and were close to him seems weird.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
why do a lot of you have issues with the "goodie" bag they were given? I doubt that it's referred to as such by attendees, but I think it's nice gesture for people that were close to him to have something like what they received.

This is the symbol necklace guests got. I hope they have something similar at the October tribute.

Yes I looked. Doesn't change the way I feel about or see this beautiful man. But I do understand how some of you feel. I'm OK with it all because I know he's OK. For some it takes time. I still smile when I hear his music and see pictures of him. Do I care? OF COURSE. "I don't make the rules. I just play"

Seems like a nice gesture to me. And maybe an idea of things that might be available at the tribute event in October. Paisley Park is in your heart

I mentioned being British cos of the stiff upper lip thing but glad I'm not the only one who finds it odd. [Edited 8/14/16 11:41am] Agree. It's all a bit tasteless to me; the posing for photos outside PP and putting them on social media. I know people want to celebrate his life etc but doing that at a memorial doesn't seem right to me. Plus they all must know he wouldn't want that

The goodie bag to me was tacky and peculariar too. Its not like you were going to a concert and buying a Tshirt & poster Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

Although, it's a memorial...this celebration of Prince's life has been a multi-day event and is being considered a "Prince Week" of sorts...and it's still an actual EVENT, hence the fact that it was given a name (The Eternity of Prince). It's not uncommon for memorabilia to be distributed at such commemorative events. Similar is done during Elvis Week in my town (Graceland is here) every year during the anniversary week of his death for the last 39 years. I know it's looks bizarre because his friends are being given "fan items"..but what else is there? He's gone. I'm sure it gives many of them comfort.

I don’t think of it as goody bags. I think it's nice to have mementos. I would treasure it. I hope these items are for sale, I’d be first in line. ..Hello, who is it?
Yes, this is a prettyman, Princey!

JMO but I think the 2016 Prince would have liked his tribes gathering together to raise a glass to his life (even though he did not drink). But he would have wanted it to remain private - no photos, no interviews. I have never heard of gifts being handed out at such a service, but I would buy that necklace.

I like the necklace too. But that hoodie cheap ass piece of shit for a man that would never have been seen in a hoodie in a million years? Nooooooo. Not like I love my guitar....

People grieve in their own way. People memorialize in their own way. It's not for me to judge what other mourners have done. Prince is gone. People will eventually find closure within themselves - in their own unique way - and then they move forward into a full and beautiful life with cherished memories.....even though it's really hard to let go.

Gifts/mementos were given 2 his friends. I don't see a problem. "We just let people talk & say whatever they want 2 say. 9 times out of 10, trust me, what's out there now, I wouldn't give nary one of these folks the time of day. You know, what really gets to me? It isn't seeing pictures of him, or the urn, or the memorial. It's not listening to his music, although there are certain songs that make my stomach turn to knots.
What really, really gets me, what gets my mind all twisted up in knots, is seeing photos of Paisley Park. Because when I see pictures of the building, it reminds me that the creator of the sounds that have kept me enthralled for the past 37 yrs or so is simply gone. The halls and rooms of PP are empty; the lifeblood of what made the building what it is is no longer there, so it's like a shell with....things in it now.
I imagine people walking inside and all I ever here are just echos of footsteps.

I don't see a problem either. These items were probably merchandise left over from concerts, just like the purple boxes that were handed out to fans putting heartfelt tribute gifts on the fence outside Paisley Park. I wouldn't doubt that the symbol necklaces handed out were the same ones that I bought at concerts in 2011... Yeah but mementos of a memorial service? Is that really a thing people do today at memorials for personal friends or family? That's the aspect of it, for friends and family, that I find weird about a gift bag (or whatever term one wants to call it) and hoodies with the date of the memorial service on it being given out to attendees of the service for friends and family: those items ARE things FANS (like you, and like me, people who were fans of this man and his music but who didn't know him personally) would indeed buy, like at a concert or tribute show or the like. It just doesn't seem - to me, anyway - like something that you get when you go to a private memorial for a person you KNEW on a personal level who you spoke with and called your friend or family member and interacted with in a personal way. = Imo, all that stuff commercializes a memorial service that I guess I feel should be more intimate and focusing on Prince the friend and family member AS a friend and family member. Not EVERYTHING today needs to be "branded" or have a "brand" on it, but again, that's jmo. = If most people think this was cool and ok, then I suppose I should re-evaluate my thoughts; maybe I'm too old-fashioned. And I'm not saying that to be snarky, perhaps I really am. I just would feel strange accepting a bag of 'merchandise' at a memorial service for a person I knew/loved on a real, personal level (vs. being a fan and buying this kind of stuff at a fan-centered event).

A broadcast would be wonderful, but if it doesn't happen it would be fantastic if org members that are attending the October tribute would Periscope it for the rest of us who can't go. I doubt very much if there will be a ban on cell phones for this event. I knew nothing about Periscope until the Bruce Springsteen tour this year...and his fans did a wonderful job of "Periscoping" most of the concerts so that those who couldn't attend could watch them live. I think that would be a great option for org members. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

This is a good idea! Any org members going to the tribute concert down for this or are able to do this?? Even if they do broadcast this event, it would be kool to see it thru the eyes of someone in this community. "A strong spirit transcends rules." - Prince

These are definitely not concert leftovers. The necklace has Eternity written on one side and 1958 on the other. Anyway I'm not sure why some are bothered by this. As far as the hoodie goes...didn't Prince wear one to the People's Choice awards once? And the Grammys in 2013? Paisley Park is in your heart
