A-list talent is OK to have and those are cool people, but definitely NOT if it drives up the price of tickets. The people I really care about being on the bill for this tribute are:

1. The musicians and singers who played with Prince and can play and sing his music the way it sounded when they were playing and singing it with him

2. Other artists he produced and wrote music for

~

I am definitely still hoping for some kind of memorial.

~

Happy to have my travel booked... hope there will be other events that weekend too! Would love to go to something every day on the weekend following the 13th.

Agreed. I would want people he performed with, recorded with or wrote songs for. But with a venue that large I think they need to go beyond Revolution, NPG and 3rdEye band members.

nod I agree with both of these comments. I actually looked at First Avenue to see what was shaking. They already have events booked that don't seem in any way related (at least to me).

I wonder if perhaps something at Paisley Park <After Dark>?! That would be something special!

Also, I put a posting on the fan gathering page for this, but if we have enough Purple Army in town, it would be kind of neat if a local single plex movie theatre (there are a few licensed ones in the area) would be interested in screening a movie or two on the 12th or the 14th if nothing else is shaking. So a huge gathering of the Purple Fam can get together. Would be something special too. I totally don't mind even doing the canvassing but need to know who is interested so we know what kind of numbers we're looking at. AKA if you're reading this and ARE interested, let me know in that thread in the fan gathering forum smile

Interested! I think for sure we need to plan some events. I would imagine most of us will stay through most of the weekend? Especially if there are things planned.

There is two of us going. We are flying in on October 12 and flying home the morning of the 15th we both have too much family stuff going on that weekend. So we plan on squeezing events and visiting all kinds of things in the days we are there

Now, that the memorials are done, I have a sneaking suspicion that announcements about the tribute are coming. Does anyone else feel the same way?

Like many of you I was frustrated about how long it was taking to get to this point but my 40th birthday is the day after the tribute concert and I feel like this was meant to be. I'm going to be celebrating a milestone birthday in his city with other fams. Until the announcement, this was a milestone I was dreading but now, I can't wait to be there and meet everyone.

Keeping my fingers crossed the details come soon.

Me too. And I haven't heard of anything in MA. I'm going to the Revolution show on 9/1 as I'd rather see them than some folks that had nothing to do with P. It's nice they wanna tribute though. Sad I'll miss the purple army get together though.

Right? There have been tributes, but I also would rather wait and perhaps spend a little money or travel to see someone who had a connection with Prince..I'll keep my eyes open. Someday I want to go to PP..maybe something will come up and we can take a road trip!

announced soon.
Planning a trip takes time to research.
Hoping we can get a purple army discount on hotel rooms as I'm sure many will be attending..Maybe an org member visit to 1st Avenue,PP..an org dinner? I'm working with a tight budget.Perhaps a hotel will offer a quantity discount if we all book a few weeks in advance?

I think a good handful of us are flying solo. That's what made me think to arrange the dinner(s) and the Prince movie night smile More ways to meet up with org fam! I really wish they would let me put posts on the main thread, but I do have a post in the fan gatherings...I will probably want to take a consensus...I think the movie night will be on Wednesday (maybe a 2nd one on Friday, but sounds like other events around town). Will need to determine if people want to see:

UTCM/PR

PR/GB

GB/SOTT

UTCM/SOTT

biggrin

Was also thinking a org trip to PP would be so great. We could hold our own memorial. Maybe all wear as much purple as possible and stand in a Love Symbol formation so we can take a photo as our own tribute smile I dunno, just throwing ideas out there.

All of your ideas are good ones..I definitely think we need a FAM/org memorial service may help us ( his real fams) feel alittle better..and less slighted.
I have never seen SOTT in its entirety.. And getting a copy is both expensive and nearly impossible. So getting a chance to see it..Surrounded by people who loved him as much as I do would be incredible!

It would be strange if it wasn't streamed...right? Anyway if it is I've wondered if there might be interest in "viewing parties," for lack of a better term--if enough folks live in a particular region to all get together and watch? Might not work out, but it keeps popping up in my head so I finally let it out.

If the Chanhassen Cinema doesn't have any interest, you might check with Landmark Lagoon Cinema in Uptown. They just showed UTCM a couple of weeks ago.

Wednesday would make sense, I see your point. I won't be there until Thursday morning sadly - so of course selfishly I'd want to do Friday, but I see that point that maybe Friday would be reserved for a more "active" night than watching a double feature movie. BUT STILLLLLLL smile

hmmm I think I am going to try for two separate movie events - possibly at two different theatres too depending on what I can work out with the venue(s). One on Wednesday night for two movies (which would be a nice chill night after a day of travel for those of us coming in that day), and maybe Friday matinees for the two other Prince films?? Options for people smile ...that leaves Wednesday afternoon or Thursday afternoon for a Purple Army memorial/tribute at PP etc. Still playing with ideas but this will ensure that all 4 are shown and at two different times so a bit more flexible for people coming in on different days but still wanting to get together with the fam for a Prince movie celebration smile I would like for this to be able to include as many of the fams that are wanting to attend. This might be a way to do that.

Keep the suggestions and input flowing fam. I want this to be a special trip for all of us grouphug biggrin

I think it was actually the Uptown Theatre that showed UTCM. (They have the same owner and are like two blocks apart.) But both Lagoon and the Uptown would be good ones to check!

.

Also, WXYZ bar at Aloft Hotel in downtown Minneapolis showed Sign O' the Times on Prince's birthday this year. I've never been there so don't know if they normally show movies, but it may be worth seeing if they'd want to be involved in any way?

.

Edit: Looks like Aloft has a history of Sign O' the Times-related events. Interesting!

.

[Edited 8/2/16 16:26pm]

Perfect! I already reached out to Lagooon Cinemas and Uptown was next one my list so if it's the same owner...that's two birds, one stone! woot! Super stoked!! excited This hairbrained idea of doing these Prince movies is going to work, I can feel it! lol

Thanks for offering to organize a movie screening! I saw PR in the theater in April so I would prefer seeig UTCM (plus I love UTCM). I really wanted to go see it in the theater this year, but no one was showing it except in a few select cities. UTCM might also be a better choice because only real fams will want to see it. PR will draw non-fams which would change the atmosphere of the screening. I don't get into town until Thursday, so Wednesday wouldn't work for me personally, but I will be there all weekend. Hoping for Prince-related concerts on the weekend nights and glad First Avenue's mainroom isn't booked yet!

~

What about an early afternoon screening on Friday at Chanhassen Cinemas, the movie theater Prince used to take everyone over to from Paisley Park to watch movies? During the day might be safer in case there end up being concerts every night that we all want to see. Or if people don't want to do daytime, maybe Saturday night when that Zombie pub crawl is happening downtown.

UTCM does seem to be getting the most nods so far smile

I attended the UTCM showing at the Uptown Theatre. nod They did a showing of Graffiti Bridge the following week, but I wasn't able to attend. . People brought up wanting a showing of SOTT while at Cherry Moon, but the issue is the cinema doesn't know who owns the rights to the film or something along those lines, so they're a bit SOL even though they seemed up for it. [Edited 8/2/16 22:52pm]

Hmm well I am wating for the Uptown/Lagoon peeps to get back to me...but I could even see if my local theatre will let me know who to contact for the rights, as they have played all four - some more than once - since April.

What I think needs to happen is Michael Moore travel the world and talk to Prince fans. Ask about the first time they saw a Prince video, or heard a Prince song, what Prince meant to them, what they remember most about Prince, intersperse those interviews with concert footage and videos of Prince. Maybe even put in some of Prince's interviews, or excerpts from those interviews, and show this in theaters with the proceeds going to a chairty Prince supported. Maybe even have each theater do a food drive for local food pantries or shelters, something Prince used to do at concerts. These tributes with the big stars that are performing songs they just can't truly perform in true Prince fashion - these aren't for the fans/fams, these are not a memorial. And we truly need some kind of memorial.

[Edited 8/3/16 6:58am]

I am definitely with you on the fundraiser aspect in his memory. I host fundraisers all year long at work. Hoping to host perhaps a 50/50 and a donation collection for a food pantry or shelter etc at the movie screenings. That way we all can feel like we are supporting one of Prince's causes.

And...we don't necessary need Michael Moore to go around and talk to fans. Beauty of technology...we could have people at PP give that answer to someone recording small clips, and ALSO can have people at home record their own, and get someone who is good at editing to put them together nicely. It can be done. biggrin

I know that Esperanza Spalding, Judith Hill, Andy Allo, former band members, Sheila E., etc. may not pack the house and may not get a HBO deal, but that is what Prince would have wanted. He would have cringed at the thought of some of the ideas that are floating around about this, but it is what it is. He is not here and it will be what it will be. That is why I think his true fans need to have some gatherings and events also. This thing is in our hands now. He wanted fans to be more involved as evidenced by the Phase 2 distribution.

nod I agree! Really this all works out, will relay the info from the cinemas as soon as I know.

Also thinking a group get together/dinner would be cool. Once I know which cinemas we are working with, I will reach out to some fun establishments near by to tell them what's going down and if we can maybe arrange a deal at one of their establishments. smile

I'm with you. A fan since I was 6, so 34 years and I've wanted to take this trip since I was in high school. That was when he was having regular fan parties at PP. My best friend and I dreamed of road tripping after graduating HS and going to PP, Glam Salm, First Ave and all the other spots. I'm planning on going whether I go to the tribute or not because I want to be in MPLS with other fans who understand. My BF has said that I need to be with "my people." I'm not sure how I feel about the concert yet but I do feel there's something special that'll go down that week. It just might not have anything to do with the tribute concert. I hope the family will open up PP for the fans to visit and pay respects while we're there for the show.
