There's a part of me that feels the same way. Prince was too much of a control freak not to control what happened to his music after he died. I wonder if the will is in a safety deposit box somewhere; Or maybe Tyka made herself a fire after she got word that Prince was dead. [Edited 7/26/16 12:43pm] I've been waiting for someone to open a long forgotten drawer or suitcase or shaving kit or move a book or it be stuck somewhere else that no one would think of. Ugh. It's maddening!

I remember seeing that in the media. My fingers are crossed that those documents are helpful in setting the estate quickly and efficiently. It's bad enough to be grieving. To have estate issues only makes things more stressful. Not to mention the whackos coming out of the woodwork greedy for a slice of the purple pie. Sheesh

I'd like to think so, but I don't think that will happen.
There's only one way that a will (unknown to anyone else) would be considered legal in Minnesota: if it was created as a holographic (totally handwritten, unwitnessed) will in a state that recognizes such a will.
Minnesota does not recognized holographic, unwitnessed wills created within that state. That means at least two witnesses (and likely an attorney) would be aware of the will.
Basic requirements for Minnesota wills: http://info.legalzoom.com...-3958.html .

Out of curiousity, will Duane's children, Briana and VN, have the same rights to hiership as the siblings and half-siblings? I just does not seem "right" to me if they do. I am trying to wrap my head around it. I thought that the right to heirship would have ended when Duane passed.
Not complaining, just trying to understand everything. This can be and get complicated.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
. It's actually not complicated. IF Duane is truly Prince's half-brother (ie, the son of John L), Duane's heirs are therefore Prince's heirs under Minnesota law (which treats siblings and half-siblings equally). That's why the court is insisting that Brianna and VN submit to DNA testing which they are trying to avoid. They have said from the start that they should not have to. But the court has already made a strong statement. . Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

Duane's mother and John L were not married when he was born. Just having John L listed as his father without being married to Duane's mother is not sufficient legally to prove he is a sibling. If Briana and VN's DNA come back showing they are related to Prince they take from the Estate as Duane would, and they each would take 1/2 of Duane's portion.

I had hoped, in some spiral-bound notebook, that P would have written what he wanted to be done if he was incapacitated, or worse. Just something ... a guideline ... Maybe some secret drawer in the wall or in a desk.

Unfortunately, the Judge would not consider the above.

I dont know the answer. I did not look up John L. Nelson's estate paperwork. From the documents the siblings filed with their Affidavit of Heirship they did not include an official ruling by the Judge that Duane was not an heir.

How long can he keep appealing. You bring in a musicologist to see if a copyright violations have occurred. You rule yes or no. Is he filing this suit in different states? I will tell you that he lives in my county which is the white collar capital of the east coast. He could be a scammer.

A rumor is being reported that PRINCE who passed away on April 21st, 2016, may have a living illegitimate son according to the Santa Monica Observer. I want to stress this is a rumor and the estate has not made an official confirmation on this matter. The article advises the estate, which is being run by Bremer Trust, they are aware of the results.
