Madonna? Really? The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

I love Madonna, but I can't hear her doing a Prince song. And I've sat here and thought about it for a good ten minutes. Which song could she possibly do? I think Prince would come back to life for just enough time to kick her ass if she tried. "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."

OfftheWall said: She did a very beautiful speech about Michael. I think it's quite poignant that it's Madonna, as it was MJ, Prince and Madonna who were lumped together as the major icons of popular music in their eras, and now she's the only one remaining... it seems appropriate that she would be a part of a mainstream tribute to Prince. Exactly and I think that's the main reason she was asked to do it.She,Prince and Michael were the biggest, most iconic superstars of the 80s.

He smells like lavender -Madonna
http://blog.thecurrent.org/2015/10/prince-serenades-madonna-at-late-night-paisley-park-gig/
I decided to try to discretely scan the room to see where Madonna was taking in the show. I had expected her to hang back a bit, or maybe be sitting in her roped-off area, but once I stepped a little closer to the stage I realized that she was not only in the front row, but had perched on the edge of the stage at Prince’s feet, looking up at him adoringly as he sang. There is a face that people make when they are watching Prince play guitar; it’s a gleeful expression that combines the joy of going down a roller coaster with the realization that you are witnessing a moment that might never be recreated by another being that lives on this beautiful Earth. It turns out Madonna also makes that face when she is watching Prince play. As the band stretched out into another jam and Prince ripped into a soul-levitating guitar solo, her mouth relaxed into an awestruck gape, revealing a shiny gold grill underneath her perfect red lipstick. Prince, too, seemed a little awestruck by Madge, appearing nervous as he flitted around the stage to different instruments and taking great care to get the lighting, sound, and chord changes just right. It completely shifted the energy at the Park, which usually pulls like a magnet toward Prince’s spot in the room, and it was a rare chance to see two megastars share an intimate moment and a series of knowing smiles. After the sixth song of the set, Prince leaned down and whispered something back and forth with Madonna, and then hopped back up to his keyboards and simply said, “Cool.” With that, Madonna made her way out of the building and Prince was left alone with his band and small group of adoring fans, and he delivered simmering renditions of “1000 X’s and O’s” and “X’s Face” before hopping off stage and handing things back to the DJ.

A lot of fans don't realize that Prince had tremendous respect and admiration for Madonna. He worked with her before ("LoveSong")and even wanted to make a movie with her.

He said a lot of great things about her in interviews too
The thing that people don't seem to get is they were peers. They 'made it' together with many other artists musicians singers entertainers in the 1980s to me the last of the great times. The last period when real superstars were made. They along with others went through something together, only they could understand.

On YouTube, if you type in "Madonna's tribute to Michael Jackson VMA," her speech comes up. It's touching that she could connect with the pain underneath the glitter and explain it in a way that's not self-serving. I appreciated how she repeatedly says Michael is a human being, echoing the message on the org's login page.

Totally. For me, I can't even stand all these bands on stage, including McCartney singing any of the songs. Its just cringe-worthy. No one can do his songs. No one. I like the idea of the Revolution being involved somehow. Genius is born, not made. Prince is a Genius. No question. RIP Legend.

The fact that they from the same era means nothing. Many others were. Sorry, I don't like Madonna and would never think of putting them on the same "league". They are clearly miles apart. The only thing that connects them is the 80s and a few collaborations. The idea of them both touring together... I'm glad he did not go through with it.

As wonderful as that may sound, that would be a fiasco. A tribute should be about the artist and not how others feel about that artist, how he influenced them, and so on, but it always ends up like that. That's why Bowie's tribute from Gaga sucked and Annie Lennox's and Gary Oldman's speeches were beautiful and heartfelt. Then Bowie's band played for the last time together in another beautiful homage and even Lorde did good by giving a humble and touching performance. And I don't even like Lorde, so I'm not being biased like that.

They should have picked the musicians that worked with him throughout the years. They knew him better than Madonna. Seems like Madonna is not the best choice to represent all that he was. I get he invited her to perform at Paisley, but it doesn't seem like for the past 15 years they were best friends that communicated in a weekly or Monthly basis. Billboard is doing this for the ratings. Not a good choice at all.[/quote]
James said: You're forgetting they dated years ago. Wrote many songs together, and probably met dozens of times over the years at events, including at Paisley Park very recently.
. I think she'll do well with the right songs. I'd like to hear her sing Love Song. And perhaps backed by 3rdeyegirl for songs like Lets Go Crazy. I think she could pull that off well. Lol, no I didn't forget. Madonna slept with a host of men, from musicians/celebs and collaborated with others musically. This will just be another publicity stunt for her. She wasn't with him from the beginning of his career, in his band sweating her ass off for hours of grueling rehearsal, like the band members that knew and saw different sides of him. She was not the only female artist he wrote songs for. That's like asking Sheena Easton to do the tribute for him. Lol. Another commercialized, ingenuine tribute. Where was Billboard and the Grammys when Prince was alive? And you say she should be backed by 3rdeyegirl when it should be members of the Purple Rain doing 'Let's Go Crazy'? The latter would be the more respectful thing to do, with those band members. I say include the band members specific to the era of the songs. That would be a real tribute. The 3rdeye band was the last on the Prince map of bands, not that well known to the general public of Prince fans. But I guess we will have to wait until someone like Stevie Wonder, as some have mentioned, and others do it right, if at all. Rant over... So glad I went to the Carnegie shall tribute in NYC, and at least saw some of his former band mates do a tribute for him , even if Prince didn't attend, but at least they didn't wait until he passed to do it. I bet some other former band members were asked to participate, but chose not to at the time, but now they are shedding tears. Rant over... Lol [Edited 5/12/16 5:48am]

Is she going to mime to a dance remix of Purple Rain? Or give a speech about how SHE has been affected by all of this? It's Billboard we're talking about, not the North Sea or Montreux Jazz Festival. I'm sure they've been working on this line up for months. And as for talking about how much she's been affected or inspired by him, why not? That's exactly what everybody here has been doing all the time!

Yep.
I think I have wondered what it was like when Elvis died, JFK, Marilyn Monroe ...and a bunch of other one-of-a-kinds. Now I know.
It will sink in eventually. I am accepting that Prince is in the past now. And I play his music and watch performances on youtube -so glad they are there.
Sad that it is impossible to ever see him perform for real again -but that's how it goes sometimes.
I think that he will become like another great dead composer -dead, and yet always alive because of the mastery of his art. Which has made him immortal in fact.

I agree about her being more well meaning and better persormer than people give her credit for. I'm a HUGE fan of both Madonna & Prince but i'm scared that she's so far away from Prince musically that if she does sing / perform it's just not going to work. I know she will work hard and work with earnest to try and get it right but it's a huge gamble. I want it to work. Have you had your + signs today?

From the tributes I've seen that have been made for Prince, it's fair to say that none match Prince's greatness, actually you realized how great he was. The exception goes to the Dixie Chicks' rendition of Nothing Compares 2 You, truly haunting. So because of Prince's greatness and because many of the artists that could have do him justice are no longer here with us, with the exception of a few, or are not physically well (God, I wonder how Joni Mitchell is doing, Prince adored her), we shouldn't expect much and just enjoy that they are recognizing him.
As far as Madonna, not the biggest fan but I understand what makes her great and iconic, not only was she a huge part of the 1980s music scene and culture, but she knew Prince, and let's admit the Billboards want ratings so Madonna is the perfect choice to lead this tribute, I say lead because I'm willing to bet there will be other musical guests.
