To be fair, she's the only real contemporary from Prince's era left who could do him justice. And she was a big fan of his. I remember hearing an interview with M where she was struggling at the start of her career and she mentioned walking back to her flat in NY and hearing 'When Doves Cry' on the radio and, in her words, it changed her life and gave her a kick up the backside. She has of course recorded with him to.

I was also at the opening night of the Sticky and Sweet Tour 2009 leg at the O2 Arena London. She did a lovely tribute to MJ halfway through the show, bringing out one of the dancers from the 'Thriller' musical show and mixing up some of his hits. It was really well done, especially at short notice (he passed just a few days before).

Madonna on the guitar what a stunt... disbelief

Of course she is not a musician - but she is still an amazing artist. She has been playing a little guitar since the early 2000s. It is just supposed to be charming!

Madonna has known how to play guitar since before she was famous, in the first or second band she was in, she was the bass player. I forget which album or tour, but she played guitar on one of her early 2000's tour also

SOOOOOO glad it is Madonna doing it... it makes COMPLETE sense....she, MJ and P were the Mount Rushmore of music in the 80s.... she had a connection with him... they did a song together... They were spotted together last year....

it is the BEST choice..

THANK GOD it isnt being done by Beyonce.

Honestly, there's no one who can do him justice. Any tribute is just going to be a disappointment in my eyes. Maybe it's the grief talking but no one will be good enough in my opinion. So I'll just have to choose whether I want to watch or not. neutral

Sick of people writing off Madonna?

She seems really overrated here. Most of the people here love her and only a few of us stated our opinions in which we all have the right to. I like some of her music as I am a huge fan of pop music but she is just not on the same level as Prince, musically. That's why I don't want her to do the tribute but it's still gonna happen anyway so whatever

Exactly, I feel the same way too.

The Beatles could come back to life and reunite on stage as tribute to Prince but yet that still wouldn't be good enough for me lol

Only Prince is worthy of giving himself a tribute. Imagine that!

I totally hear you. I felt the same and to some degree still do. But have you seen some of the tributes thus far? Some are pretty good. I'll wait to see what Madonna does before I critique her. I mourn with you friend.

I actually haven't had the nerve to watch any of them. I heard D'Angelo's performance of Sometimes it Snows in April was good, but for whatever reason I've been avoidng them.

Well at least better than taking a pop star from this time, much better of the same era as Prince. Madonna does play several instruments actually, I have seen her live, she does know how to put on a show, her strongest part is surely dancing, the shows are very theatrical. Madonna can play rhythm guitar decently too. Not impossible for her to be backed by a live band like 3rdEyeGirl or The Revolution and mix that with dancing. Madonna is up there with Michael Jackson and Prince that way, though of course not as talented musically as Prince, heck she knows that, but she is not untalented!

Will be interesting to see, I do hope some tributes will also pay resepct to the guitar playing of Prince. A lot of people don´t know that Prince could play guitar amazingly. He was sort of the contemporary to Hendrix of our generation, but in my ears better as Prince was more diverse in his playing, several genres ect.

Many famous guitarists who could make a tribute that way too, I hope so, to not just showcase the pop persona and showman Prince was, but also his instrumental abilities. Play guitar myself so that would be cool to see.

But I understand Billboard wants views so then they have to grab someone really famous too, that plays a part here.

Some say they hope for Bruno Mars, but sorry I just can´t stand that guys music at all or his way of being artistic.

What defines a musician?

Since her early days she played drums and she plays guitar. She wanted to learn to play her music on guitar, so she got a teacher. What defines someone being a musician?

it's 1 out of hundreds of tributes that will happen. You nor I know what kind of tribute it will be. People are assuming something musical. All tributes are not musical. Maybe it will be. Maybe she'll get others to put something together.

I know why you refuse to answer the question, because you want to get paid for doing so. wink

Well I'll answer the question for you, for free: One who composes, conducts or performs music

FYI - All instrumentalists are musicians, but not all musicians are instrumentalists.

If you want to define a musician as someone who plays musical instruments, thats just basic dictionary description. A musician is someone who is made of music and uses instruments to interpret and bring out feelings in some ethereal and physical form. Like those instruments are an extension of the person. An arm, a leg. Prince was music. It came naturally to him.
Madonna had to have voice lessons and instrument lessons. She is no natural and imho she's miles away from Prince. I feel she compensates the lack of true natural talent with an explosive image and very professional live acts. Like Gaga, who did a very well orchestrated and professional tribute to Bowie, with the clothes, the positions, the mimicking, the wow effect and basically had no soul. To me the whole thing felt like I was watching a David Bowie impersonator,in true Las Vegas Elvis style.
Prince could go on a stage alone in a turtle neck and glasses and play a wicked guitar, sing his heart out and floor everyone around him with a simple rendition of one of his songs. It was bigger than him, it came out of every pore. The depth of committment and talent in that man was huge and overwhelming to everyone.

I hope her tribute is a spoken words and then some clips of some of his live performances. Even those are a nightmare to chose from, cause they are by the thousands. Now that in itself speaks volumes.
