Charming reply. The issue isn't with having some giggles, who doesn't like to laugh, even at themselves? I do all the time. The issue is you are a phoney who obviously enjoys attacking others you feel don't belong here under the guise of just having a little fun, just trying to lighten up around here. That's all fine and dandy. I can take a lot of shit. But I still find it disheartening that in one's grief they reach out to a place like this only to find the threads about how you have to endure bandwagon fans, late comers and the like. We get it. It just comes across a bit rude and unwelcoming to the loathsome newbies who just want to find a safe place to share. I do hope it made you feel better tho to tell me off good and proper. I should have known better so my bad.

What is your deal? If you don't like this thread just don't post? Okay?! The first umpteen people got it and were happy to pitch in. And calling me a phoney? Who the hell are you?! I've been on the Org for 17 years and have contributed to many discussions. I've met many wonderful people here and have had countless great conversations. Calling ME a phony is goddamn laughable.

I think the real problem is you don't know what you're talking about or who you're talking to. Lighten the fuck up and move. You've already shit on this thread enough. Let us have our fun. Your high horse can grade elsewhere. If you don't have a sense of humor and don't get the joke, this isn't the place for you anyway.

I looked at your profile. You only have 54 threads. Look, sorry if you identify yourself as a newbie and that makes you feel bad, but JUST MOVE ON. This thread was clearly not meant for you. What made you feel so entitled that you would just come on here and spout off. We don't need a wet blanket. If some of us longtime Prince fans who get lost in the arcane facts want to giggle at less knowledgable fans (and let's not beat around the bush there) then that's really no business of yours.

We love everyone who comes here to share in grief at this time. Newbie or not. Please understand, those of us who have been here for a while and know every word to every song Prince ever released and possibly came to age as he came to fame, have been viewed as freaks for a long time.

Our ring master is now gone, and we are all a bit lost.

So nothing is meant rude, we've simply been through a lot here together.

We've loved and hated him at times, praised and cursed him for his actions, but we never abandoned our loyalty to him despite the ridicule we took.

I hope the door has opened for many to discover all they missed while he lived. I hope they explore. It's sad for me to consider he had to die for any of these doors to open, but I guess better late than never.

Btw, welcome all newbies!!!

That is a very good post.

All I was trying to do was start a little place where longtime fans could have a collective laugh about some of the things we're hearing from the outside world about the man who has meant so much to us for so long.

I think one of the most god awful things is news reporters talking about prince. In moments like this you have to prepare yourself for the fact that some will know next to nothing about prince but yet are oblidged to talk about him because its a news report. But then when you mix the ego of some of these presenters , they beging to think and talk as if they know what they are talking about. Then it just gets embarassing and shameful.

One quoted

I think there was a problem with Prince. He was more of a girls' artist than a boys' artist.'
We find it hard to relate to him because there's that flamboyancy that you had with Davie Bowie as well.'

None of the disdain in this thread is directed at newbies (at least it shouldn't be). I love newbies because the majority (if not all) of them are straight-forward and honest from the start by saying they are new to Prince music and want to know more about him. It's the disloyal; some-timey. fake 'fans' that irk me. His last hit was NOT Purple Rain. He had hits with 'The Batman Soundtrack', 'Kiss', 'D&P', 'Cream', 'TMBGITW', 'Musicology' (which was one of the biggest tours and albums of 2004)...I can keep going because all of these singles alone were critically praised, had steady radio play, and did impact the charts during their releases. It's not just with Prince that people like this irritate me. I felt the same way about MJ, Whitney, and Aaliyah when they had all passed away. If you only followed them for one or two albums when they have 4 or more in their catalog than are you really a fan? NO! You're not! If you can't stick with an artist during the 'flops' or less popular albums, then you ain't loyal and this thread is about you. I can't tell you how it makes my skin crawl when people just praise 'Purple Rain' or the popular singles that came immediately before or after PR such as 'LRC', 'When Doves Cry', '1999', or 'Kiss'. These 'fans' don't even know that Prince pioneered the formation of the digital music system that has become so common place today. They don't know this because he was doing this during his 'weird phase'...that phase when he went by this as his name: prince . That was probably when these fair-weather fans started to wipe their hands clean of anything Prince instead of sticking by him and just enjoying the music. Real fans don't just turn their backs on an artist that they truly care about. They did the same to MJ. They did the same to Whitney. If you just like the popular music, than you're not a fan, you're a trend follower. Prince never stopped making music at any point so there was no reason to stop listening to him other than he just wasn't popular to like anymore; or, you just stopped liking what he was doing. I can understand that latter reason because it happens; but, don't just think that you can stroll back in years later after his passing and try to say you're a hardcore fan...you're not; you're just not. If you truly love an artist and are indeed a hardcore fan, than you take the bad with the good because you know that even in the bad there is going to be at least one or two songs that make the album worth your time. To listen to his music when he was making each album was to experience his growth as a musician and be a part of his life's journey. So, in closing, to the new Prince fans, I welcome you. hug heart To the fair-weather fans who didn't support Prince during his non-popular, shunned years, you can turn back around and go back out the door you just walked through. No tears saying that because I don't like fake people and that's what these people are...fake; sorry, not sorry. All just my twocents

Yesterday I said that to a girlfriend of mine. I then found the (newly) online video of "Do Me Baby" from 1982 (capitol theater, iirc). Played the video, Prince says something ilke "Are you ready for me to get undressed?" and proceeds to take off his shirt and unbutton his pants while "Do Me Baby" is playing.

She stood motionless with her mouth literally hanging open. Her only words were "Oh. My. God."

It turned into a good night. smile

A couple of "observations" from a co-worker who knows in a fan and went to see him in concert more than a few times:
- sad news about Prince. I didn't know that song Nothing Compares was his. I thought it was Sinead's song.
- I know you went to see him a couple years ago but he didn't do much for a while did he? Me: Er, yeah he's kind of always played live and released music 😣

My personally favorite was my dad who said to me the other day "I never knew Prince could play guitar"

It's funny, I wouldn't call myself a hardcore fan. Sure I have my love symbol tattoo and nearly sent myself broke going to some concerts. But I am also missing a lot of albums like Gold Experience and Emancipation cause I've been building my collection slowly (and now that's gonna hurt to get those) I don't have bootlegs (no idea where to even start looking, dam you org rules :-p) and being only 30 I was way too young to experience Prince in the 80's and 90's.

Lol if anything I envy the fans that have everything and got to see the good old days. Why oh why was I not born 10 years earlier!

Saw this in the comments section of a Billboard article, and it made me smile. It's kinda sweet, actually.

"i highly recommend those of you not too familiar with him check out that song and his unforgettable hits: raspberry beret, when the doves cry, diamonds and pearls, i would die for you...amazing musician!!!"

It wasn't a typo, because she later doubled down:

"try giving the purple rain song a listen wink. also, when the doves cry, raspberry beret and my all time fave prince jam: diamonds and pearls. justin timberlake, adam levine and usher are huge fans of his."

Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

We all know us here are the true hugest, hardcoredest SUPERMEGA fans, the True Purple Breed, the Guardians of the Paisley Galaxy... and more!

We are forced to live in a world where other, less meticulously informed individuals also like and even love some of his biggest hits, individuals that may even own more than one of his albums but not 37 of them plus an almost equal number of albums with bootlegged material.

The fact we have to share him with them is admittedly undignified, but I urge the Purple Congregation to "think about the future" because we depend on less dedicated self-described "fans" to eventually get what has yet to be released. The record companies will only be interested if they think enough people consider themselves Prince fans.

So it is imperative that next time you meet someone who clearly is not an admirer of your magnitude, you hold your nose and promptly play along so as to boost the person's (wrong) impression they are actual real fans.

Here are some suggested replies to some of the things you might hear:

Them: "Back in the day, I really loved his hit "I want your sex"

You: "Then you absolutely need to get the sequel, "Sex in the summer" -- it's on Emancipation".

Them: "Oh man, I get chills listening to that "Untitled" song he gave to that naked guy."

You: "Then you need to get your hands on Sign O' The Times, specifically Adore".

Them: "My brightest memory is dancing to his song, "Oh Sheila!" but I just can't find it on any of his albums!"

You: "It's a sad story -- they were engaged to be married but they had a fight so he had to song removed. But run and get A Glamourous Life and Romance 1600, it's just as great!"

Basically, just humor everybody, lie for the cause and let them think they're worthy. It's the only way.

To be fair, it's not been just the "non-music people" like Kevin Smith that have gotten things wrong. John Blackwell wasn't able to remember the title of "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic" correctly and Lenny Kravitz said that "Prince" was his first record (he "corrected" the interviewer that said "Controversy" was Prince's first record). You'd think those two would get things right at least.

If you read the "lost" Rolling Stone article, Prince gave the writer a tour of Paisley Park and showed him a blank spot on one of his mural walls. Prince told him (paraphrasing): "either Purple Rain or the Superbowl is going there, not sure yet..." So apparently Prince thought it was one of his own highlights.

My favorite part of that concert is when he's doing Jack U Off and gets to the line, "As a matter of fact, you can jack ME off." Walks away from the mic, then comes back and says, "That's right - I said it."

Next time, play "Head" from the 1986 birthday show. You'll have another good night. faint

Since Prince's death, I've seen a lot of non-hardcore fans -- sometimes people who say they're really really into Prince -- post some funny things on social media. I've seen lots of reposting of that Creep cover with people saying it's the best ever. Same thing for the Super Bowl and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame performances. It's one thing to say hey, this is really good!" but time and again I'm seeing people say these are the BEST performances Prince ever did. Hilarious. Yes, this is me being a smug, hardcore Prince fan laughing at people who haven't spent nearly two decades arguing with strangers about ridiculously arcane Prince facts. Yes. I don't deny that. Maybe they should be laughing at me. Oh well. It's all in good spirit. Today it peak laughable when I saw someone post this piece claiming that some video of Prince doing Motherless Child is his single best performance ever. This is ridiculous! Motherless Child?!? This person has clearly not seen many Prince performances. http://www.trunkworthy.co...never-saw/

Reading through this thread, thinking about how easy it would be for the org to turn in to a real fans vs. new fans situation, and thought I'd make a few points.

First, KS admits in the opening post to "being a smug, hardcore Prince fan" and even says maybe he should be the one that is laughed at. So, anyone getting twisted panties at the thread or the topic need to take a deep breath and not get offended. This thread is an obvious attempt at to alleviate things, and maybe it's just too soon for some.

Secondly, there is a big difference between newbies or old time fans that couldn't keep up and fell out of touch and the fakers that pretend they're fans when it is fashionable. Those asshats that showed Prince and Prince fans no respect 2 weeks ago but now want to seem hip deserve to be made fun of and if they don't like they can skip right on out of the org.

That said, to the newbies and the oldies coming back to Prince fandom, WELCOME! Strap yourselves in, you'll never get bored and never run out of things you haven't seen or heard yet. I know this because I've been hardcore non-stop for over 33 years and there is so much to listen to, watch or collect that I am quite positive I will never get my fill, and I say that with full awareness that nothing new will be created post 4/21.

Hopefully we create an atmosphere where we all get along, the longtime fans hip the newbies to amazing gems and we continue to pass this on to more and more people. Everyone should have the opportunity to discover what we've known all along.

I think about this. I didn't get into my 2nd favorite behind Prince, P-Funk, until 92ish. To oldschool p-funk fans I'm a fresh newbie who jumped on the bandwagon post hip-hop samples. Doesn't stop me from being the biggest P-Funk of anyone that I know personally (not counting internet friends). Also, Jimi Hendrix died the year I was born but that has never stopped my love or interest in his music.

So, again, welcome to those new to the site. Sorry in advance for any smugness you may encounter, but, I'm sure you'll find plenty willing to share our knowledge and love of our favorite artist. Understand the time & $ we've invested over the decades and don't expect us to provide you with all the rare material you may see us talking about. (Might I suggest familiarizing oneself with the sites rules regarding bootlegs. They will continue to be strictly enforced, I'm sure).

Lastly, try not to take it too personally if we have a laugh at less than knowledgable comments. A couple years back (wow, has it been that long) Prince's pick to host a Paisley Park tour to promote his new albums mistakenly said "Lovesex, that's my jam!" and we still haven't let that one go. wink
