Lots of funny comments here smile

(To be fair though, hardcore Prince fans on this board spout a lot of nonsensical "facts" about artists they aren't as familiar with too.)

I must admit, it's refreshing to hear about his tremendous impact on the lives of many people, but I do cringe when I hear questionable/erroneous info about him on news reports and interviews. I can only take small doses of it before I flip the channel. I don't have time for the whole rekindling of the stupid "Prince vs MJ" debates, the "we were best friends, but haven't talked in 30 years", and last but not least, the "I wrote books and articles about him, so I must know what he was going thru in his final days" people. It's a very draining ordeal, and I can only imagine what his family goes thru on the daily. I do have snobbish moments when it comes to his music, but I just let some people enjoy the treasures they discover when it comes to unreleased stuff and little-known facts.

True words. The Superbowl '07 performance is hardly one of his best. Same goes for the While My Guitar Gently Weeps guitar solo he did on that one show. There is however a Purple Rain rendition circulating on Youtube that has garnered millions of views and that truly shows his awesome guitar playing abilities

I was at a village BBQ this afternoon and there was a guy who said he was in mourning becasue of Prince.

I asked him if he was a big fan and he said, the biggest. So I asked he the last gig he went to. 'Oh sadly never got around to that' he said.

I asked him if he had a lot of the music and he said ' I have all of it. Purple Rain, 1999 and Around the World in 80 Days'.

I actually find it a bit saddening that some music critics are only now praising him for his more "rock" performances.

You know, the Superbowl performance, Creep, While My Guitar...

It's almost like they're giving him a pass to some white rock club that he was previously barred from.

And yes, the general public would have a more rounded view of his overall output, had he allowed YouTube uploads. So, it's partly his own fault.

I actually prefer Prince with a microphone, synth and the Linn drum machine, than the six minute guitar solo histrionics. That's my Prince.

Excellent post. Yeah, it's like hey everyone he played guitar so I guess now he's a legend!

On the other hand, look at how many talentless pop stars rule the charts today.

I guess I wish they'd show Prince being a master on guitar...and on bass and on piano and on keys, etc. He's not just some Joe Satriani with a little funk.

Agreed.

I'm hearing so much crap from people. 'huge fans' who don't seem to own any albums being the most common.

I cringe when I hear 'I never got a chance to see him live. So you weren't available on any of those 21 nights at the 02 then? Or any of the hit not run dates?

People are so fake and insincere it makes me shudder.

I have way more respect for people if they said they weren't too interested.

I am a huge fan since about 1982 and I'm guessing like many of his older fans I preferred vintage Prince. He sort of "lost me" in the 90's and early 2000's - due as much to my personal life circumstances as his choice of making a different style of music. But being from MN he was still always on my radar and I still bought an occasional album if I heard about its release (Musicology, Lotusflowr). But you got to agree the man did not make it easy for his fans wink It was work since he chose to use a different approach to sharing his music. While i still found his "mystique" charming and interesting a lot of fans deemed him aloof and self-absorbed. Plus if you became a Prince fan back when it all began you were probably a fan of his more energetic, raw, loud, raunchy, stadium-worthy, party anthem music and the smoother R&B style music he made was not your thing. It took me awhile to appreciate the complex vastness of his talent. I bought both AOA and Plectrumelectrum as soon as they came out and was thrilled that I loved things about both of the records after being lukewarm about a lot of his work for years. I felt like I finally got it. I felt complete for lack of a better word. It was dreamy attending the album release event for Hitnrun1 at PP and another event there that same wknd. I've spent the months since then catching up on the stuff after the 80's and I'm so glad I did because it was like hearing it all for the first time. And I added more of his older stuff to my collection that I had previously dismissed that are in regular listening rotation now. I guess I'm not sure what I'm trying to say...I guess just trying to justify being here. I appreciate everyone letting us "newbies" in here and all the memories people are sharing.

Yes, excellent post. I find myself being defensive about these sorts of things too. People getting hip to someone they really didn't care too much about (i.e. didn't buy or listen to his music for decades) as some sort of grief-junkies.

And the comment above about him suddenly being revered (by some) as merely an 'axe-god' are spot-on. Some are trying to box him into a conservative culturally acceptable narrative which is easier for popular comsumption. It's like those dull males I had to argue endlessly with as a teenager who disdained him for the most superficial reasons ("Look at his clothes! He must be gay!"), and their modern-day contemporaries, are only capable of revering him once they can configure him in their preferred, depressingly conservative, 'axe-god' mode or trope.

I feel the same way. It irritates me that 20 years ago in high school, the people who would call me "that fag who likes Prince" are now singing his praises to no end. And moreso, those who only recognize his guitar prowess without crediting his other abilities, do so because it reinforces that masculine sterotype which society and mainstream finds so acceptable. To me, the one thing that comes through in Prince's music, more than in any other artist, is his passion. That's what always has attracted me to him. So wether he's playing a blistering guitar solo or screaming "do me baby, like you've never done before ..." he always captivates me. Some of my favorite preformances where the one's he did of Just My Imagination on the Sign O' The Times Tour during the Aftershows. He would do those amazing guitar solos and then break it down and do the adlib part in his falsetto: "I treated you so strong, made love to you all night long. Bought u diamond rings, gave u everything." For much the same reason I loved the Sister / Adore Medley he did on the Lovesexy Tour with that blistering guitar solo and then at the end just his falsetto against the organ / keyboards / saxophone singing "I'll give u anything you're heart desires, I'll take u higher & higher, If u let me." That's why I love Prince. Sorry if I strayed off topic.

We all know us here are the true hugest, hardcoredest SUPERMEGA fans, the True Purple Breed, the Guardians of the Paisley Galaxy... and more!

We are forced to live in a world where other, less meticulously informed individuals also like and even love some of his biggest hits, individuals that may even own more than one of his albums but not 37 of them plus an almost equal number of albums with bootlegged material.

The fact we have to share him with them is admittedly undignified, but I urge the Purple Congregation to "think about the future" because we depend on less dedicated self-described "fans" to eventually get what has yet to be released. The record companies will only be interested if they think enough people consider themselves Prince fans.

So it is imperative that next time you meet someone who clearly is not an admirer of your magnitude, you hold your nose and promptly play along so as to boost the person's (wrong) impression they are actual real fans.

Here are some suggested replies to some of the things you might hear:

Them: "Back in the day, I really loved his hit "I want your sex"

You: "Then you absolutely need to get the sequel, "Sex in the summer" -- it's on Emancipation".

Them: "Oh man, I get chills listening to that "Untitled" song he gave to that naked guy."

You: "Then you need to get your hands on Sign O' The Times, specifically Adore".

Them: "My brightest memory is dancing to his song, "Oh Sheila!" but I just can't find it on any of his albums!"

You: "It's a sad story -- they were engaged to be married but they had a fight so he had to song removed. But run and get A Glamourous Life and Romance 1600, it's just as great!"

Basically, just humor everybody, lie for the cause and let them think they're worthy. It's the only way.

My partner is from Poland, and while her English is very good, it's not great. Sometimes things are lost to her in translation. On the day that Prince passed, I had heard what had happened from news clips and about an hour later my partner called me in a fluster and blurted out "Prince William has died!" I camly said "No, it's Prince that's died honey," she said "Yes Prince William....how sad," I said "It's Prince the musician that's died." She replied with "OH!...I'm so sorry." Somewhere through hearing about in on the radio she had not listened properly and jumped to the conclusion it was William that was dead....bless her.

The Saturday night after his death, my neighbors cranked up their stereo outdoors in tribute to the man, you know, out by the pool.

Anything from 1999, Purple Rain, I heard Kiss, Raspberry beret.

Look, I respect it y'all, and I smiled inside and out.

But I couldn't help and think, they didn't know what his music's about.

They don't know, as they show their love, I had a pocket full of tunes.

Stuff they never heard before, new to them for sure, but for us would be old news.

And I was tempted to crash their party and say, do you really wanna hear Prince?

But I let it go, and remembered they would prolly soon forget.

The MOST hilarious thing is people are now willing to pay $50 for Emancipation, Rave, Musicology, 3121, etc...when a month ago you could get them for under 2 bucks used. Just because some of his fans weren't part of the org doesn't make them any less fans. Just because they don't think every piece of music he created was worthy of jubilation doesn't make them any less fans. Sensible folks loved Prince and most of his music too. And we know we don't have to beat up on those we deem unworthy of being a true fan because they didn't spend years here being snarky to make us feel like the only "real" fans.

It's like this: There haven't been many occasions for humor or lighthearted bonding in the world of Prince. So when those of us who have spent years (or decades) having people treat us like freaks for being so into Prince are now confronted by legions of those same people suddenly proclaiming their deep love for Prince and declaring minor pieces of his musical legacy to be the greatest things ever (e.g.), I don't think it's a stretch for us to want to laugh about it a little bit. It's cathartic, to be quite frank. We don't need people riding in on their high horses with moralistic bullshit. Seriously, if you don't like the notions of my thread, just move the fuck along. Get over yourself and realize that maybe some of us needs some laughs right now, and this is a common bond way we can do that.
