I agree it took me a few to listen to stuff, and then it took me another few days before I could even look at a "news" report, now I don't watch them at all because they are at that stage where they have decided on who PRINCE was, they are shaping the story how they want it to be to make "interesting" tv and news. SO I back off that stuff, I will try to look at those like Stevie Wonder or Van Jones or whomever, talking about the Prince that "we" knew, the guy who'd play for hours than throw a party till 6am, or the guy that would do a cd a year, or my own experiences seeing him in concert 70+ times, or going to the "new power soul" release party in NYC at the Spy bar, I mean I could go on for a days, but that is the person I miss, the person who I did not KNOW personally, but because of him, i knew myself a little more.

I still can't watch most of it, I avoided radio stations playing all his music, and MTV and such.
Not to mention all the people who gave a rats ass about Prince prior want to rush to me to talk about Prince now.

But peoples greediness for the Vault is making me sick. And people on the org are getting a bit vicious. There are many others who have been changed for the better by Prince's passing. But peoples rudeness ... yes for people who were his lovers friends bandmates people who helped Prince present the music etc I think it's arrogant.

You are obviously grieving in your way, but others do it differently. The reality, none of us knew Prince. Unlike Susannah or Mayte, our Prince was only words, music and performance.

One fan's greed for the Vault is another fan's desire for Prince to remain close. To still see him or hear him.

I like to think I'm somewhere in the middle. I deperately want to hear more, to fill a sad void, but if I never hear another note, life goes on. Watching the stuff on You Tube is a fan version of a grieving family member looking back through a photo album. Whilst you can't watch it, I have been watching and rewatching tonnes of stuff, with a beaming smile and a few tears.

As for the people all wanting to talk Prince with me, or the songs filling the charts? I think, great.

As you know, us regulars on here have been dabating for the last few years as to how Prince could cement his legacy. We know there are some more negative fans who said Prince had trashed his legacy.

Looking at the the News, listening to the radio, seeing the charts, I smile at the Naysayers and think, how wrong they are.

I think Prince's legacy was already bigger than any of us imagined.

I would love the vault flung open. Given to the world where fans could make their own albums, mixes and tales. I don't want to see others generate profit from work that is not theirs.

I have one exception, If Prince, or a family member creates a catalogue trust that funds a Charity for ever more, then, as a fan, I'd be lining up to protect it with them.

Both Susannah and Sheila E seem a little nervous about the content of the vault. I think there are a couple of reasons:

1. They don't want the material released before it is determined if they can profit from it. Writing credits and such.

2. They are concerned about their own legacy. They might fear that some of the material puts them in a bad light. Not necessarily anything embarrasing. But if we get to hear all of the material, we might learn that some players weren't as influential as they have made themself out to be.

I don't think that has anything to do with it.

Sheila E will forever been known via 1984-1988 and she doesn't seem embarrassed about it. She's talked about being half naked, talked about when her breast was out while performing with Prince, the picture is out there. Susannah has never had a problem with nudity.
.
And there is no way that releasing music will prove that people were or were not as influential ... How does that work? 10 songs released from 1985... how do we prove or disprove that someone wasn't as influential??
.
How do you capture, the conversations and discussions and time spent? That's where it comes from

I'm not talking about nudity smile

Maybe the vault will show that some songs were written and recorded before certain people came on the scene. Maybe there are rehearsals that does capture the conversations and discussion, and maybe it turns out that those "discussions" are basically Prince giving detailed instructions to the band on how to play song they supposedly co-wrote.

I don't know and you don't know. That's one of the reasons I think the vault should be made available in its entirety. It could help settle some disputes. It could tell us a lot about the genesis of the songs, about Prince's creative process.

I'm not saying I don't want music from the Vault. Let me be clear on that. 1977-1989 I want all of it lol I just want it done in quality.
.
We don't need the Vault to still see or hear him. I mean if there were only 10 songs, we still have all the released stuff. albums videos movies and concerts. And I don't care one way or the other about the songs now filling the charts.
.

I have a friend who I tried to share some Prince music with and she just laughed some of it off saying "I just don't get him" etc now she's posting clips of everyone in Louisiana playing and singing Prince music everywhere. She's going to try to talk to me about it and him when she comes back. I have my "bitch please" face and response ready for her.

.

I'm not judging anyone for watching youtube vids(I was an advocate for this being a way for PRince to spread the expanse of his career for years. I get the need to watch, I try to. I watched him on that show the other day 'something Girl'? It's hit in miss for me. I start and then can't finish. I actually saved one of the concerts to my FB for others to see, but I didn't watch it.

.

There is a trail of woods near my place of employment where I go for walks on break. A week ago someone dumped a bunch of 'junk' on the side of the trail. And when I looked closer, it looked like the remains of someone who died. Not the body but the belongings. A rosery a pair of shoes, picture frames etc very intimate things just tossed on the side, probably by a child who didn't care about the parents except for any money or things of monetary value.

.

That's how I'm feeling with PRince right now. I wanted him to make money off of his valuables while alive. But now I want it put out in top quality. Not in a messy mad rush, but take quality time and put some wonderful things together at reasonable prices in time.

When Prince sang on Crystal Ball "My baby draws pictures of sex..." we are not going to see that in the Vault, that is stuff that happened in home(s) in intimate places.

I think that is a selfish reason to want the vault made available. To settle disputes? You really think we will be able to pick apart stuff to be able settle a dispute.

Wanting the material to be preserved for research isn't particularly selfish. Maybe 'disputes' was the wrong word, but surely you would agree the access to the material combined with thorough research can answer some question about for example writing credits?

I agree, but if he didn't prepare it, I fear for it, and would rather trust it in the hands of the fan community.

I had a dream once, a few years ago, that Prince started wearing a 'Kill Switch' on his arm, the ones that monitor for a heart beat, and trigger reaction when it stops.

When his heart stopped, the switch sent a signal to the Vault, and at that moment the entire contents were uploaded onto open servers and distribution lists all over the world. The fans knew he had died, when their inboxes began filling with music, like rain from the sky!

When I find amazing unreleased tracks on YouTube that I've been enjoying for years, I've been sharing and posting them. Why? For selfish reasons. It's hard to love music so much but not be able to easily point someone else to it. "You really gotta hear Moonbeam Levels...but you never will. Shit." Now for a brief moment, it's easy to share this wonderful art with people. I realize there are those of you who would totally disagree with my actions. But there it is.

That won't happen.

A wonderful booklet of 2-3 cds from each year 1 with the music 1 with the rehearsals 1 with concerts 1 with videos

And I'm happy. Just start with the earlier years get me all the music from my favorite eras before I get too old.

Thanks.

In some ways it is because it's about my desire to share. And part of what helps me to heal in the wake of his death. I know damn well Prince would frown on it. But he would also frown on me owning and listening to boots in the first place.

I don't know. Fuck it. Prince is dead. In the end none of this matters.

lol we Prince fans sure do have some colorful dreams eh?

I've had my Vault dreams too.

We've had a priviledged period, those of us who have the 'boots'

There was something very interesting about having the music

Once the music get's to everyone, that is over lol

I think having the 'boots' for me was like when I drank before it was legal to drink. Once it became legal for me to drink it wasn't so exciting.

But I'm in a reserved place, patient, when it comes to what will come out of the Vault.

I was exploring the Parade era and music before he died. I have a friend that I told her I was going to put together some images and music (released and unreleased) and was going to have her over with some food and wine and and wanted to see how the music and art/photos of the era moved her.

I think a lot of Prince fans want to share Prince so others 'get it'
But I'm usually more content and happy talking with people who already get it and know it.

Well good point, but we knew him too, just not personally. But yes we need to be easy on each other right now because we are all going through a lot, and she is distraught and maybe not thinking clearly.

.

There is actually a GoFundMe up there for Susannah that one of her friends started because she is having tough financial times and is having trouble providing for her children, etc. So I'm sure she's under a lot of stress, in general, and this on top of it is tough.

.

But Prince would have been fine with unreleased material coming out. He already said someone would probably release it after he was gone. He could have planned all that better, with a will, but he was assuming he would stick around longer and I wish he was right.

Well...More of the reason for people not to "vulture"...

She's probably singing on some of those tracks, and that may bring relief from her financial troubles..

She is about respect mostly, but I'm sure the thought crossed her mind as well.

If most of the vultures won't donate, then they should not take any opportunity away from his family and workers to earn a living.

Uhh, all I'm saying is that they have better things to do than to worry about YouTube videos and floodgates in terms of unreleased/unofficial material.

So far, neither Sheila nor Susannah nor Susan Moonsie nor Troy Beyer nor Mayte nor Manuela nor any of his other flames have been named important people in his estate matters. And when you sit on a wealth of tapes and material (of which they no doubt possess), it seems a wee bit bitchy and controlling no matter how many platitudes its dressed up with.

I'm all for respecting the people in his life. I feel for Tyka as I know how it is to lose a sibling. It sucks and its painful and she can eat all the cheetos and dye her hair all shades of purple she wants. That ain't my business.

But if an exgirlfriend comes into the picture and starts huffing and puffing about the vault or unofficial material, that is a crossed line. Even the concept of "respecting his wishes as if he were here" is bullshit. If you were to do that, nothing in the vault would be released because people won't just let his ass die and be dead. How about we worry less about hurting Prince's post mortem feelings and worry about preserving the legacy.

[Edited 4/29/16 0:33am]

Tyka is way too busy with atorneys and trustees at the moment----sifting through The Vault.

I see absolutely nothing bad or selfish in what you are doing because most fans who share or download outtakes or other unreleased stuff would buy proper, legit releases anyway, even if they have already downloaded them.

Sharing Prince´s material doesn´t hurt him financially, it preserves his legacy and only adds to it. I never would have bought so many legit , official releases and concert tickets if I had never been given mixtapes or bootleg material back in the day. But of course I also spend lots of money on legit stuff later, regardless of whether I liked it or not.

.

.

No offence to Sheila and Susannah but I find it a bit strange that Susannah´s two messages obviously contradict each other, and that Sheila is now constantly mentioned as his "ex-fiancé" when there are people like Mayte and Manuela out there who´ve had longer lasting relationships with him that even led to a marriage. Feels weird because where was she in the past couple of months , or in the last couple of years since their dispute and since her book was released?

Also feels weird because I am a huge Sheila E. fan but these days I´m questioning her actions a lot. I understand she´s grieving, we all are, but so are probably others who were close to him.

.

I often ask myself how Prince would feel about all this? About Susannah and Sheila and their thoughts. Would he trust them with his vault and what to do with it? Or would he rather have someone like Kirk Johnson or maybe even Bobby Z. or one of his last real girlfriends see in charge of things?

He wouldn´t even allow Fdeluxe to use the old bandname, and I´m not sure how he felt about Sheila in the last couple of years.

Not hate here, just wondering why some former associates think they have more to say than other, equally important people in his life.

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Most of the booots are poor quality with breaks and cuts...Sounds like he's underwater, or a bad dub-tape anyway...

Be a fool to buy them---when everything will be released soon in much better quality. They are his number asset. Several of the company's will be making their pitch to pay for the engineering of these.

Be a fool to buy them---when everything will be released soon in much better quality. They are his number asset. Several of the company's will be making their pitch to pay for the engineering of these.

Actually Susannah's posts are not contradictory. Read it again, she is just saying 'wait' Maybe wait on throwing it out there it is clear from the rest of it she is connecting it with the suddenness of his death.

I don't think she is saying she is against it at all.

Thats a really good point. A bit of, be careful what you wish for.

If the whole vault came out tomorrow, thats it, No more Prince music. The story is over.

I see where you are coming from now. A drip feed might actually be the most satifying outcome.

man, just reading it from your words made me sad "No more Prince music. The story is over."

nothing more to look forward to.

I think it would be great to have a 1(or 2)booklet set from the 80s 1 from the 90s 1 from the 2000s every year. of course certain periods might have more than others, but that would be a good 'drip feed'

Release them on his birthday and then another set 6 months later

The fans are sharing it and the lawyers are turning a blind eye to it for now.

My two pence on the vault... I really would love to get top quality versions of the vault tracks (got 100s on boot), but I would prefer them to be as is and not finished by anyone else (not even the musicians involved). I like Prince's Rolling Stone mag comment about "time capsules" and think the Vault should be treated like that. A moment in time. BUT happy to wait and be patient and for it to be done properly and given the proper respect it is due. The involvement of others would be in the collation and perhaps inclusion of some written information about each track. Much as I am greedy for the music (even though I suspect I have heard most of it) it does feel a bit too soon to be clamouring for it.

'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

Yeah, I think you are right, she does not seem to be totally against it but wants fans to wait a bit longer.

But what difference does it make at this point? I mean, now is the time that many people who are not familiar with Prince are going to look him up on Youtube, and I find it wonderful when I read the younger generation´s surprised reactions when they comment on some of his concert footage or those old videoclips of his big hits.

There are some kids who thought that songs like If I Was Your Girlfriend were written by TLC or Beyonce, and that Raspberry Beret was written by some other guy.

I understand where Susannah is coming from, and I´d love to see her get compensated for her input and inspiration but as far as posting songs and videos goes...I am all for Prince being known for his huge talent and his incredible live performances and music instead of silly cliches that people have of him.

It´s nice to see younger folks see beyond the mascara and falsetto and eccentric clothes and namechange.

He deserves to be one of those immortal legends, and now is the time that people are looking up his stuff on the internet.

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"
