I dig what she means, but we're all entitled to avail of the stuff that gets out there, via various sources, it's such a joy to come across previously unheard material now, we need it especially at this sad time

U know what people? Don't be made to feel bad or guilty by others on here or elsewhere, to hell with social conditioning or political correctness, life is too short as we have learned over the last week, enjoy and share the man's music!

He knew this would happen once he died. He knew he was dying. If he didnt want it out there he would have left instructions. He was comfortable with letting go once he left this earth. In the grand scheme of things do you really think that he cares that a concert from 1987 is on the internet? His legacy now goes way beyond his music and he is watching over us in ways that are way more important than this.

For the record, I don't object to Prince's music being shared in the slightest - I am vigorously in favour of that. What disappoints me is that she's getting shit from people for saying what she did, especially at this time.

Same, sure I have more bootlegs than i'll ever have time to listen to.

No disrespect, but the value of Prince's creations is way more than monetary. Giving it away doesn't cheapen it. In fact you could argue that music that is not heard has no value because by definition it should be played and enjoyed.

Yeah, I don't remember Prince seeing it that way

Who has the right to decide what, when and how much is a different argument. Apparently it is NOT up to Susannah. She's entitled to her opinion, even if I disagree with it.

Well this is it, and here people are trying to shout her down for voicing it and calling her arrogant?? Holy fuck, who are we to say that to her?

Whatever, I've said my piece, i'll leave people to bitch about her if they please.

This is a discussion forum, we're discussing what she said. It'd be pretty boring if we were all a bunch of automatons just automatically agreeing with everything anyone associated with Prince over the last 40 years said or commanded. You make it sound like we're calling her up on the phone and cussing her out or standing outside her house yelling or something.

No. We're not "entitled", as much as we might enjoy it.

It's out there and we can listen to it, but we're not entitled to share it on youtube, or anywhere else...

Susannah has plenty to say considering you know she has tons of unreleased shit (and released shit) in her own collection.

I'm pretty okay with never hearing one of Prince's exgirlfriends offer their opinions on the vault anymore.

I don't think she has a problem with unreleased stuff out there.
.
It seems she is talking about right after his death the rush to put all his stuff out there, and I know there are people making money off of it even moreso now. Just like those people who accepted those purple boxes and the next day they were up on Ebay.

.

I'll admit, I feel weird about it too.

Both Susannah and Sheila E seem a little nervous about the content of the vault. I think there are a couple of reasons:

1. They don't want the material released before it is determined if they can profit from it. Writing credits and such.

2. They are concerned about their own legacy. They might fear that some of the material puts them in a bad light. Not necessarily anything embarrasing. But if we get to hear all of the material, we might learn that some players weren't as influential as they have made themself out to be.

The wooh is on the one!

Yes, I would love to hear the stuff. But even I'm not so excited about it. It just means Prince is dead.

Sheila's take is different than Susannah's. Susan is just saying, wait a minute. Sheila is saying don't at all.

Lawyers will be feasting on this for years. It raises interesting questions- does an artist, Sheila E for example, have any rights to the material in the Vault that she appears on?

I understand her, but at the same time IF people are not making anything off of it then I really don't have issues with it. I for one have most of this stuff that is NOW being posted but I finally can share it through links to others that never got the chance or never knew that Prince did this much stuff. To the general public PRINCE is Purple Rain and 1999 and performing at the Super Bowl, but they don't know the "other sides of Prince". D'angelo did "Sometimes it Snows in April" and to most fans that is a top5 fave song of all time, to the public though SOME thought that was a new song by D'angelo, or never knew it.

So I get where Sussanah is coming from, but I am more upset with. or say, take issue with those now selling off things like CD's out of print like "Chaos and Disorder" for a 100 dollars or things like that just because people now want it.

Woah, how about you guys back off and show a bit of respect to the people who actually knew him??

Uhh, all I'm saying is that they have better things to do than to worry about YouTube videos and floodgates in terms of unreleased/unofficial material.

So far, neither Sheila nor Susannah nor Susan Moonsie nor Troy Beyer nor Mayte nor Manuela nor any of his other flames have been named important people in his estate matters. And when you sit on a wealth of tapes and material (of which they no doubt possess), it seems a wee bit bitchy and controlling no matter how many platitudes its dressed up with.

I'm all for respecting the people in his life. I feel for Tyka as I know how it is to lose a sibling. It sucks and its painful and she can eat all the cheetos and dye her hair all shades of purple she wants. That ain't my business.

But if an exgirlfriend comes into the picture and starts huffing and puffing about the vault or unofficial material, that is a crossed line. Even the concept of "respecting his wishes as if he were here" is bullshit. If you were to do that, nothing in the vault would be released because people won't just let his ass die and be dead. How about we worry less about hurting Prince's post mortem feelings and worry about preserving the legacy.

[Edited 4/29/16 0:33am]

How do U know she is refering to YouTube videos?

When I first started saying all the stuff coming up on Youtube, I backed away as well.
It all felt really weird. I'm not excited at all about any of it.

With all due respect to Susannah & Sheila, Prince didn't want me to collect bootlegs but for 29 years now I have done it anyway. So, if I wasn't going to "respect" his wishes, why would I respect theirs?

That said, I don't have anything that isn't circulating among fans. She didn't say that if I come across it I shouldn't download it, so, guess she's not talking to me... wink

Yeah I agree 100%. The day after I was seeing people on Facebook who never post anything about Prince already talking about how he could have an album a year for 100 years. This story and tragic event is still to fresh in so many minds of people to really even wonder about this. I mean even when all the matters are settled and something is decided I can almost BET that you are not going to see any of this "vault" stuff for quite a while, and I really HOPE and PRAY that fans, don't question WHY isn't there more releases coming or who isn't this song out or that song out now. The man is gone, respect him.

I don't think that has anything to do with it.

Sheila E will forever been known via 1984-1988 and she doesn't seem embarrassed about it. She's talked about being half naked, talked about when her breast was out while performing with Prince, the picture is out there. Susannah has never had a problem with nudity.
.
And there is no way that releasing music will prove that people were or were not as influential ... How does that work? 10 songs released from 1985... how do we prove or disprove that someone wasn't as influential??
.
How do you capture, the conversations and discussions and time spent? That's where it comes from

Yes, people are accusing Sheila & Susannah of feeling possessive or arrogant. But it's them and many fans who feel possessive and entitled. When it comes to bootlegs, I don't see how it hurts anything. I really hope that the millennial generation can see why some scoff at today's "great artists."

As for the vault, what were his wishes, exactly? All I've heard him say is "someone will release it. It won't be me."

I can understand there being frustration from the ones who knew him in terms of the vault. There might be some personal stuff in there.

Overall, I think his friends are being understandably protective of him.

Yeah Here in NYC there is a Used CD/DVD/BOOK shop that sells tons of stuff and I go there a lot to find things that I lost or never bought from artists, and since I have all the PRINCE released stuff I basically always skip going through that section, but most of the USED stuff sells at about 4-5$ per cd, unless it's a rare one, and of course the day he died that FULL section emptied out, but now I notice that this store when someone trades in something of PRINCE or say Bowie after he died, instead of them charging 4-5$ now that USED cd is suddenly 10-15 or even more, anything to make more money.

I understand where she's coming from, and I don't necessarily disagree. However, the "protecting a legacy" argument is almost invalidated by the fact that Prince didn't even have a will. If he had left detailed instructions of his intentions for releasing the vault material after his death, I'd want to respect his wishes, but since that didn't happen ....

Okay, I hear you, but if someone has something they want to sell and right now someone else is dumb enough to pay too much, why do you care?

I have a couple dozen vinyls that are duplicates in my collection. If I sold them 2 weeks ago I could probably get $5-15 each, if I sell them now I could probably get $10-30 each. If I decide to do that would you disapprove? If I tried to sell them $100 each I might be an ass but if I up the price a bit because of supply & demand that would just be because the value has increased.

I don't know, I'm seeing lots of crazy prices but I'm not mad at those trying, as long as it's not fake stuff like pirated copies & such. I'll say this, if anyone is dumb enough to pay $99 for the NPG Catalog from '93 (as seen on eBay) I will run to list mine at just below that price. However, I assume nobody is that dumb, they won't sell, and I won't list mine...

What exactly is the point of keeping the stuff off YouTube now? So somebody else besides Prince can make money off of it?

Prince had a point and a right to keep his own stuff offline - but it doesn't mean he didn't screw the fans in the process. He wasn't perfect.

I still can't watch most of it, I avoided radio stations playing all his music, and MTV and such.
Not to mention all the people who gave a rats ass about Prince prior want to rush to me to talk about Prince now.

But peoples greediness for the Vault is making me sick. And people on the org are getting a bit vicious. There are many others who have been changed for the better by Prince's passing. But peoples rudeness ... yes for people who were his lovers friends bandmates people who helped Prince present the music etc I think it's arrogant.

All that said, if I had something I didn't need and a fellow orger needed it, I would sell it at the same price I would've 2 weeks ago. As far as the masses who ignored Prince for over 2 decades they could have supported him when he was alive like we did and pay retail. They didn't have time for him when Chaos & Disorder came out, if they want it now, let them pay... or wait for the reissue. No?

So I get where Sussanah is coming from, but I am more upset with. or say, take issue with those now selling off things like CD's out of print like "Chaos and Disorder" for a 100 dollars or things like that just because people now want it.

Not trying to inflame, just disscussing... wink

I hear ya, and I am on both sides I can understand your point, but at the same time there are people who go and rush to find something of someone who just died, buy it and then sell it to someone who wants it bad enough because it is a business choice. I understand a $ is a $ but at times it looks like taking advantage, to me that is.

Sure, that's what resellers do. Let me give a non-prince example:

I have a copy of the comic New Mutants #98 which is the first appearance of Deadpool. I paid $1 for it in 1991. If I sold it a year ago I might have got $75-100 because it's the first appearance of a popular character. If I sell it now I may get $250-300 because of the movie. Would you approve of me selling it now at such prices? Keep in mind, if I take it to a used media store they would probably offer me $50 or less and then turn around and sell it for $250 or more. It's the same thing, no?

Again, I'm definitely not trying to start a fight while we are all still grieving. Just discussing...
