Prince was a musician's musician ...

My point precisely: I would expect a musician to bring his own original vision to the table.
That's what Skipper usually did with covers.

What Bruce and D' have done is replicate, mimick the original versions. That's why I'm disapppointed.

I have mixed feelings with these also. But, impersonation is the highest flattery. How would you approach this though? I mean that has to be hard as shit. I kind of have to give them points for effort bar none.

I don't like all of the attention vultures feasting on his death, but I have seen some of these acts of tribute as pretty classy attempts, and attempts is all they can ever be.

If their hearts are in the right place... then it's all good.

We are all so full of doody here

Everyone (including media) are now picking up on the significance of "Sometimes It Snows In April" in relation to his death, but honestly it's "Way Back Home" that got me choked up about his passing. He sums up his life and everything that mattered in it in that one song. It's almost like he wrote his own eulogy. I don't think he knew he was going to die, but what he wrote in that song is very emotional to listen to now. I keep thinking over and over; I wish he had not died alone.

maybe they're two people grieving the loss of someone important to them... maybe they were trying to be respectful in their approach

musically, i thought D'angelo's tribute was beautiful... i wasn't really into Bruce's... but that's not the point

i respect that they paid tribute to an artist they loved... in a way they saw fitting

Anger is a normal feeling. It is no better or worse. If you have a problem tolerating anger, you seem to have a problem.
Besides the tributes aren't my cup of tea either. They only make me miss him more.

Andy Beech Recounts Making Guitars For Prince
04/2016

Bellingham, Washington -

It is one of the quintessential Prince moments. The kind of moment you remember where you were when it happened.

For Andy Beech, the 2007 Super Bowl halftime show was more than a moment -- it was life changing.

"I'm just sitting there on the couch saying, 'play it, play it,'" Beech said. "I'm like, 'please pick it up,' and when he did, I'm like, 'yes!'"

Prince was playing Beech's guitar.

"I remember how excited in that room it was, it was invaluable. It was fun," he said.

That symbol-shaped guitar made famous by Prince was made by Bellingham's self-taught, custom-guitar builder.

"That's the design you see today and I copied that design at Prince's request," said the 51-year-old craftsman.

Beech said he made four symbol-shaped and 27 cloud-design guitars for Prince.

"When you have somebody at that level giving you the chance to prove yourself, it's huge," said Beech, who called the pop star's death devastating. "He's one in a billion, there is no more."

And then there was the time Prince, with Andy's one-off symbol-design guitar, made Guitar World Magazine.

"There is Prince holding the guitar, one of the four symbols I had made, all that information had my name all over it, made by Andy Beech, it was humbling," he said.

Beech, who made his first guitar out of scrap lumber and desperation at 13, never met Prince but knows they are kindred spirits.

"Most people in his situation would take the endorsement and just play the Gibson or the Fender, but he didn't," Beech said. "He would have rather sourced it out and find unique things and unique people and that's what made his music, as well."

The full time carpenter who does finishing work on high end homes under construction andpart time guitar making, says as he gets older he hopes to transition into more guitar making and less home building.

He credits timing and luck for landing the Prince jobs after a chance meeting with former Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde, who recommended Beech make the copy guitars. He's made 600 guitars over nearly four decades and just cranked out a custom guitar for Judas Priest guitarist Richie Faulkner.

He hopes there will be more show stopping moments, but knows nothing will compare to that Super Bowl performance.

When asked how he will top that night in 2007, Beech said "I don't know that you can."

The Inside Story on Designing Prince's Paisley Park

April 2016

In 1985, 23-year-old architect Bret Thoeny was asked to build something he had never constructed before: an artist's compound.

"Back then, this wasn't done. Artist's weren't building their own compounds, only large companies or record labels were," Thoeny said in an interview with Billboard Thursday night (April 22). "But Prince, Prince had this vision to have everything under one roof. And this was decades before it was common for any individual to do that."

My happy memories of Prince: He played a concert in my hometown in 2002 which was too expensive for me to go to. It was about $130 and I was just too broke to go. But I heard about the afterparty at another location from a friend in the newspaper business. $30 cash that was to go to charity. I borrowed the $30 and stood in line from 10p to midnight, then we were let in and stood until 1a. My legs and feet were getting tired, but all tiredness left me when the Purple Yoda hit the stage. He immediately launched into a cover of a Led Zeppelin tune, which surprised me becasue here was a devoted Jehovah's Witness playing a song by the arguably satanic Jimmy Page and Company. Also startling was the highness of his voice. He could hit notes that Robert Plant could only dream about. I checked out his favourite Hohner Telecaster and saw that the long chain around his neck with the NPG logo on it was constantly hitting the top of his guitar. I thought that must have been really distracting, and admired his skills all the more. I was six feet away from him, and while I was much taller than him, he appeared to be a giant. So exciting to watch, so skilled, so funny between songs, such genius to be in the presence of. Everyone in the room knew it was special. A dude at the back brought his trumpet and was invited up to the stage to play with the horn section. He finished with a chant of "It Ain't Ovah" which the whole crowd got right into, then he teased us with saying "But I gots to go!" Then he did go. We all screamed for a very long time for him to come back, but the tour bus rolled. A guy I knew recorded the set with a tape recorder his had in his baggy pants, and while the sound was pretty muffled, he made some nice coin on selling the CD he made out of it.

Second time was a proper concert in about 2010. He had the big Love Symbol stage, and again I thought I would watch from the cheap seats, but my seat was upgraded to a wonderful position just over the drums in the cirlce of the Love Symbol. He worked that huge stage like a star. Everyone got to see him from every angle. Andy Allo was with him and they held hands and ran around the stage. At one point Prince got an erection, which the cameraman caught and flashed a huge bulge on the big screen for everyone to see. Massive applause. I'm not gay, but it was a beautiful, funny moment. A very honest, free moment when Prince let us know he was happy to see us. The house lights went up several times to reveal about 1500 people all out of their seats and minds just dancing! It was amazing! He played Purple Rain at the end, a very long version, then he went under the stage and came out right under me to exit. I got a good look at his face and he was beaming and clutching Andy Allo, who was also beaming. That was magic I'll never forget. Love to Prince, his family and all his fans and especially the org at this difficult time. Remember when you saw him.

Amazing!!! Thank you for sharing this.

''Prince was odd and inscrutable to the end; he remains our unbelievable thing.

Maybe it’s appropriate that he died just after announcing plans to write a memoir. But what we need to know we already do: Prince was a genius, but he was also, somehow, a person, just like us...''

It's amazing 2 c so many come 2gether 2 express their feelings of LOVE and admiration 4 PRINCE. Most people might not understand the connection he has with his fans. I am so grateful 2 have a site where I can read about others going through the same thing as I am.
I am constantly fighting tears...it's very hard, and yet I still have to continue with my life's schedule bcuz I have no choice. All I can do 4 the most part is pray 4 him, keep my headphones on and cry. I will make it 2 Paisley Park soon. I LOVE U PRINCE. 😪😪😪

No dont get it twisted ok? Yes anger is a normal feeling. Thanks for stating the obvious. Its not that anger thats not welcome here rather its posting "negativity" into a thread where people are mourning....trust me we have seen more of our fair share of negativity on this site over the years....we can hold off on those types of comments for a while...thanks

Of course they would never match the originals, but Corey Taylor's performances of Purple Rain and LRC on the night he died were really nice.

There shouldn't be any negativity in this thread so I'll leave my opinions on D'Angelo etc out of it lol.

I absolutely hate this type of "reporting".

https://www.yahoo.com/news/princes-death-investigation-taken-grim-153042323.html"

This week, Michael Padden, an attorney for Prince's siblings told the Star Tribune that Prince had "substantial" problems with opioid painkiller Percocet and cocaine for at least a decade."

Why would his siblings' attorney even say this? With what purpose!? sad sad

There is nothing anyone can say that will ever make me stop loving his music or him. But it does hurt to read these type of comments. I know he was not perfect, as no one is. But still....

I guess I'll be reading less threads on here, since more and more of them seem to be preoccupied with gossip and innuendo from the gutter press. confused 'Tis all right; I can go back to the way Prince existed in my mind for decades before I ever knew anything about his personal life-only through his music.
