I am not sure if other people are thinknig this, but I have just had another few play backs on my headphones and the early tracks are sounding better.

HITNRUN is a little better than AOA and only Mr Nelson I will be skipping

This is definately growing more and more into an album you would listen to from start to finish

All corporatist media reviewers are paid off. They get flown out on someone else's dime to hob knob with the entertainers, clothes get paid for as an expense to go out to parties and dinners, they drink for free, usually get "free" copies of the albums and copies for all their friends. JayZ has had to pay out a lot to get the media to hype his little project; HITNRUN wont save it from eventual bankruptcy.

LOL... I love it when someone follows my sarcasm with even wilder irony.

They at most get a free CD or tickets to the live show. Prince actually doesn't even do that, he makes them buy the cd or the tickets. I think he asked for cash very recently.

Prince's plan - make us appreciate 3rdeyegirl and PlectrumElectrum more. We all went crazy for AOA, but weren't feeling PlectrumElectrum. Listen to PE now. That shit is AMAZING compared to HITNRUN.

"I'm going to release some stupid solo shit to test your patience. After HITNRUN, these fools will absolutely LOVE the organic 3rdeyegirl album that I'm about to surprise them with. Watch me."

This kind of makes sense. I actually liked 'PlectrumElectrum' more than 'Art Official Age'.

It is not bad at all at first and second listen. Heard it 3 times now and it is better than not bad at all... After the fourth time it will be more than OK and after five times it will be above average... But it won't stick like the classics... It will end up on my USB stick in the car, that's for sure biggrin

Well, I'm in the minority, but I'm enjoying it. It doesn't sound like what he has done before and I'm all for that.

He's clearly having a musical version of a mid life crisis, but hey, Kevin Spacey was a lot more fun when he bought the pontiac firebird, cracked open a beer and tried to bed a 16 year old (although to be fair, Prince has been attempting the latter part most of his career).

Let Prince be a plastic bag in the wind and get Josh out of his system, and go with the ride while he does. Its fun.

Well, I've just listened to the album after going into it thinking I'd hate it, especially given what I'd been reading here about it...

But I actually rather like it. Yeah, go on, call me deaf or whatever, but it's a damn fine, consistent collaboration and even the remix of This Could B Us fits in.

It's a bit short unfortunately, but I do hope it gets a physical release.

As for TIDAL itself; it's a shame the only way to listen to the album gapless is to download it to play offline in HiFi, and the HiFi option is simply too expensive just to listen to Prince's back catalogue and other artists who are already on Spotify which I already subscribe to.

I dunno, I kinda like it so far - it's like a whole album influenced by Get Off. No chance in hell of it connecting on radio, but it's got a nice energy (especially in his singing and bass playing), and some of Josh's sound manipulations are surprisingly charming.

Lyrics, on the other hand, are some of his worst.

1. Million $ Show - This actually sounds potentially fantastic. There are some great ideas in here, but I feel it could be improved upon with a better mix. I think I still like it better than most in this thread.

2. Shut This Down - Musically, it's something from Diamonds & Pearls. Lyrically, it's essentially My Name Is Prince. It's not terrible, in fact there is some good funk it there, but it's not going on my iPod.

3. Ain't About 2 Stop - Not my thing. It's just noisey. I could see this working live though, even replacing the latter half of Let's Go Crazy.

4. Like A Mack - This would have flowed better after the first track. Kinda forgettable altogether though.

5. This Could B Us - This remix definitely fits much better in the context of this album. I think this could possibly grow on me.

6. Fallinlove2nite - Well, bugger me, I quite like this version. I think this could be better if it was recorded in the same vein as Groovy Potential or any of the 2013 NPG tracks.

7. X's Face - Didn't like it on the first listen, not sure if I really like it now. The vocal melody is the most facinating part of the song.

8. Hardrocklover - Darling Nikki 2.0. Yep, I said it and I'm standing by it. It's a pretty great song, certainly one of my favourites since Lotusflow3r. I could definitly sear this on the radio, if someone other than Prince did it. I prefer the single version though, as it doesn't fade into the next track.

9. Mr Nelson - Uh... I don't get it? I get the feeling this is one of those tracks that Prince just laid down the guitar for.

10. 1000 X's & O's - Lyrically, it's the strongest on the album. I will certainly welcome this new addition to my already Prince-dominated music library. Really nice, mellow tune.

I have never listened to the original version before. So after comparing, I must say, I really like both versions. They're not too different from each other, which is nice.

11. June - From the first two line, my immediate though was - lazy songwritting. And That followed me through the entire track. It music itself, is a nice closer to the rather heavy album. It certainly would have been nice for Prince to have recorded a guitar solo to make it a bit more interesting...

HitNRun: Phase 1 - Overall, I don't mind it as an album. But most of the songs themselves as standalone tracks? Nope.

I'm not sure where I would rank this in Prince's discography. It certainly wouldn't be his worst. I look forward to Phase 2.

Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain.

MILLION DOLLAR SHOW

ok track, but i just don’t like someone else to sing lead on prince album tracks.

if this had prince on vocals it would be a cool track to open the album but as it

is now i’ll probably skip it 9/10 times. the intro is pretty pointless. except if you

take the song as a literal introduction, like say, at a carnival, a lady singing the

praises of the million dollar show, to entice you inside, with samples playing in

the BG of that fabled show (for you, 1999 etc). i just don’t want to have to think

that hard and just enjoy a banging opening track. with prince on vocals. meh.

SHUT THIS DOWN

see, now we’re getting started biggrin contrary to many people on here (at least it

seems like a whole lot) who don’t like this new “outdated” electronic sound,

i just love it. no, it’s not Burial or whatever post-dubsteb wunderkind you are

all listening to or not, it’s prince’s take on a genre, and it’s a bit cheesy and a

bit unique and a bit fucking fabulous. we’ll get 20 more albums from prince

and i’m glad we finally got one with some hard hitting beats. vocals are cool,

they’re so in your face and unrelenting smile also love how the verses are so hard

and the hook/‘chorus’ gets softer and sung in falsetto. nice tough. the combo

of the electronics with the bass near the end is making me a bit moist. awww.

AIN’T ABOUT TO STOP (notice it's "TO" and not "2" ?)

i always get a bit mushy whenever prince incorporates arabian sounding bits

and bobs in songs and so i love this biggrin don’t mind rita on here, it’s nice when

a guest vocalist is just that, a guest, not too up front smile i love how all that josh

has in his laptop is just triggered all through the song. it’s just so much that it

overpowers everything, but this song can take it. and THEN comes the guitar

and a classic prince scream. and more sound effects falloff i absolutely love

it. although i feel slightly weary about that since i have a feeling that some of

those lyrics are super bad lol oh well. i’ll have 3 more scoops please.

LIKE A MACK

ehm, well lol i just don’t know what to think about this yet. there are some

elements in there that i adore and there are some that i abhor, let’s just leave

it there for now.

THIS COULD B US

still don’t like it. i thought the original, on AOA was a nice song, but this

should have just been an internet only cast off. in hindsight it would have

been nicer if we’d gotten this through Live Nation along with “What If”,

instead of “X’s Face”, which would then have been a new track for us now.

the best part of things having been that way? well, this tracks wouldn’t be

on this album occupying a slot that could be filled with another, new cut.

FALLINLOVE2NITE

see “this could b us (version 2.0)” bored2

X’S FACE

loved it when we first got it about 6 months ago and still love it now. the

track is good enough and fits in with the other beat heavy songs so well

that i don’t mind it being on the album now. would have loved for it to be

a bit longer on the album though, it seems very short.

HARDROCKLOVER

one of the best songs here. for me it’s one of his best songs in ages and the

only thing that could have made it better would be if it were a bit longer,

as in: i wish the guitarsolo went on for another minute. alas it doesn’t and

it’s just the ‘single version’ we already had.

MR NELSON

girl, miss Nelson, please talk to the hand

1000 HUGS & KISSES

deceptively simple sublime princely deliciousness drool i LOVE those

“love thy will be done” type of synth fills behind the chorus. and when i

heard that last minute, my eyes went wide, wider, widest, ooooh snap!

you dirty old dog biggrin

JUNE

i can see why some would not like this, but i love this type of thing because

it’s so different for prince. this falls somewhere between Time / Reflection

and Way Back Home. still think he’s had something with Andy that is now

over or still somehow generating an afterglow when i heard lyrics like this.

anyway:

our bodies got used to eachother

now they're used to the sound

of Richy Havens' voice on the vinyl

spinning round & round

sometimes i feel like i was born way too late

should have been born on the woodstock stage

that’s a cool lyric. echoing Haven’s performance of Freedom at Woodstock

with that “sometimes i feel like.....”. i guess he means born too late as in got

into music too late, would have liked to come into his own during that whole

Woodstock era?

what’s up with that pasta lyric though? is that something from a children’s

song or show or something from american culture that we don’t know over

here in europe because that seems sort of random for such a ‘deep’ song.

______________

so, all in all, i like the new songs that have prince on lead vocals a lot. as an

album i’m disappointed because the opening track doesn’t have prince on

vocals, and thus the album has a bumpy start for me. then there’s the remix

of TCBU which is pointless for me, FALLINLOVE is the same, although at

least that is not a remix and just a non album track. although it feels very

lightweight amongst the other songs. the Clouds remix is just silly and very

lame.

i’m interested to hear what the physical release sounds like because my

main gripe with the entire project is the way these tracks ‘flow’. as in:

they have no flow, they all seem to cut short, end abruptly, or are mixed

and edited pretty horrible. like the last seconds of the previous track

bleed into the next one etc. like with June. nobody wants a track like that

to start off with 1 second of the previous one, then a bit of silence and

then for the track to actually start. that’s just sloppy. i hope that’s just a

thing on the tidal player and an issue that won’t be so glaring on the cd

release.

We're on the same purple page here. And as far as the physical release goes, if Prince has any sen$e he'll include a bonus track or two.

Two listens in..... I like it, it's different, I never liked fallinlovetonite but it works well on this album. I can understand the negative reaction from some fans, it really doesn't sound like a P album but hey it's 2015 not 1987. Can we assume that there will be a HITNRUN phase two?

Going by the 30sec snippets I've heard on the tidal site, it sounds kinda fresh. Not the same old Prince sound I've already got tired of a long time ago.

Further it seems as if the album doesn't slow down as much as other Prince albums do. That's actually not bad news!

Ok, after a full listen, I'm totally shocked by how much I enjoyed it. It's so nice to hear him having fun again. If there were a little less corny dubstep, Mr Nelson were dropped and it had a juicy piano ballad added, it would be the best Prince album in ages IMO.

As is, I'm leaning B+ - pretty sure I'll play it more than AOA.
