HITNRUN reminds me of Elton's Victim of Love. A terrible album of generic disco beats (the 1979 equivalent of HITNRUN's generic electropop beats) with dull vocals plastered on top.

This new sound is INTOXICATING!!!!

HITNRUN is especially embarrassing in the wake of amazing albums like D'Angelo's Black Messiah, Van Hunt's The Fun Rises The Fun Sets, and Bilal's In Another Life. All albums that have clear Prince influences, but make Prince's new material look like a cruel joke.

Most of it reminds me of those times when I'm out late on the weekend and I scan my car stereo to find something to listen to but can only find a bunch of loud, poorly mixed house/rap music, so I end up listening to Dixieland jazz on NPR.

I really like June, but I wish it was longer. That's about the best I can say. This could be my least favorite Prince album. Why is he releasing this with songs like Revelation and Stare in his arsenal?

And can anybody tell me why I can't space between paragraphs on here anymore? smile

Gah...the transition between HARDROCKLOVER and MR. NELSON. I haven't felt a jolt like that since I was rear-ended in a grocery store parking lot last year.

I first listened on my phone this morning and thought exactly the same. Tonight I've been listening through the Chrome browser and track to track is flowing much better.

There are way too many throwback noises on this record to call it experimental. A few pages back someone used the word cluttered to describe the sound....that's a good word for it.

The effect is that of a kid in a candy store over-indulging. As an artist Prince doesn't need this amount of bells, whistles and gimmicky noises. I would have preferred more nuanced flourishes here and there. Prince has a great voice and the manipulation of it is overused.

I would have loved Million Dollar Show minus the intro. I like Judith's album but she sounded kind of like Rihanna on this track. confuse

Shut This Down was going good until it was ruined by the slowed down vocal.

Aint About To Stop is pretty good.

Like A Mack? I don't get the context in which he's using the word Mack so the song annoys me. lol

I don't like remixes of any kind from anybody.

The Exes Face sounds good minus the fart noises at the beginning.

Don't like his vocals on Hardrocklover....nice music though.

Mr. Nelson is just silly.

I really like what was done with 1000 Hugs And Kisses. Good job.

June is outstanding. Very poignant and effective in conveying a sense of alienation and estrangement. I played that one over and over.

I am not a musician but I would say that Josh needs to find the right balance by exercising some restraint instead of a one size fits all approach of throwing the kitchen sink at everything. Some of the songs suffer from not having enough space to breathe.

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

I hope some of the songs grow on me. But I'm very skeptical. I strongly dislike this album.

(Plus, I was going through some shit right when those AOA singles came out. Nothing like that this time. Just shitty Prince music!)

That's true. I'll defend Rave until my dying breath. It's way, way better than SHITNRUNS. So is 20ten. This new album might be in my bottom three, along with Planet Earth and MPLShitshow. NPS is moving up in the ranks slowly! Getting better and better. lol

So far I've listened to half of it and it ain't half bad. Its definitely a "modern" sounding album(not sure if that's a good thing or not), and regardless of how the album is viewed, I'm glad Prince is mixing it up a bit. Also i Love the bass on the songs I've heard so far. And Prince sounds( looking for the right word)? Rejuvenated, Maybe?

Overall, better than i expected(after reading some of the comments on the org). I wasn't really expecting much but as it stands now, i can see myself listening to this album more than just a few times.

Anyway I'll comment on individual songs later.

Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.

Ok ... after repeated listens here are my thoughts

I have out grown Prince. IMO he desperately wants to be 20 again. Again the lyrics on those opening 3 songs are so immature and klunky the way they flow together. If Prince wants to do that kind of music just work with Timberland or Pharell who adore him by the way!!!

Yeah yeah I know if its Prince's journey and his music he can do what he wants... but I just feel embarassed for him

The last two songs sound more like what Prince should be doing at damn near 60. June sounds like a Jill Scott or Maxwell ripoff without the strong lyrics and vocal flow thaey would deliver them with.

Aint about to stop - has some potential but that whinny chant about being from north minny LOL c'mon Prince shit!!! Towards the end as the song is buulding and the Owwwwaaa is killer. That being said hes too damn old for this song man.

Anyhow to each their own. I'm sure a lot of people will like it and more will hate it because people still want Prince to be Kiss or Shes Always in My Hair or Housequake.

Me I just want Prince to get the respect that he deserves and I'd like to see him mature gracefully. I don't think hes doing that here and he is absolutely killing his legacy with relaesing so much crap and not allwoing his classic to be managed properly. Kids do not know who he is ...they don't get him and they won't just because he tries to sound like hes 20 again.

See ya Prince... I love you man you were the soundtrack for my high school and college years... but I'm ready to let go now.

Best to you my friend. Peace and Love

well, i feel i should explain, i was listening to "1000 Hugs & Kisses"

again and that last minute made me think of this:

i guess i was thinking about that because i'm a 64 yr old woman,
trapped in a 37 year old man's body biggrin

it's cool though, i know what the honeys at the club like. cool

I'm really shocked that I enjoyed this album so much because I've really hated just about everything Prince released from "Emancipation" until "Art Official Age".. I was expecting "Newpower Soul II" based on the tracklist, but I'm honestly enjoying "HitNRun" which caught me offguard.. Here's my review;

1. "Million $ Show" [***] - The first 15 seconds scared the hell out of me.. Thought some joker mislabeled "For You" as a prank, but was relieved to find that Prince was the prankster.. This is a cute, bouncy opener with great production & a sense of humor, feel good arrangement, cool strings.. A nice fluffy throwaway.

2. "Shut This Down" [****] - The screamo "My Name Is Prince" & "Loose" vocal style returns (which I've always loved).. Snatches of loopy trap, EDMfunk-lite, bad ass bass which reeks of awesome, funny outro!

3. "Ain't About 2 Stop" [*****] - Ah here we go, Prince tearing shit up! Industrial spooky Egyptian flourishes with top notch vocals, freaky falsetto, witty lyrics, fucking awesome nasty guitar, retro synth flicks, trashy noise.. Even Rita Ora is great here! A bad ass gem that should be needs a video! The most fiery Prince track since "Gett Off"

4. "Like A Mack" [****] - Thought this'd be garbage because of the title, but I dig it. This is the kind of thing Prince was going for on the "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic" album ("Hot Wit U" & "Undisputed") and failed miserably, but he nails it here.. A feisty playful club track that's just fun to listen to..

5. "This Could B Us" [***] - A remix. Fantastic production, but the recycled vocal track is annoying. P should have just re-recorded the vocal instead. I will say this is 1000x better than those shitty "Breakfast Can Wait" remixes.. Nice new guitar track though.

6. "Fallinlove2nite" [****] - Same as the previously released version, but with Zooey Deschanel's annoying vocals stripped away. Very cool, but should have been on "Art Official Age" where it belongs. Should have been a hit & would have been if P had released it RIGHT after the "New Girl" episode he performed this on, instead of waiting a MONTH when that massive Superbowl audience had already forgotten about it, but whatever.

7. "X's Face" [****] - Same as the version we've had for awhile. Industrial sludge trap hop. Kind reminds me of something from Ween's "The Pod" album.. Hated it at first, but it's grown on me

8. "Hardrocklover" [*****] - Same as the version released on Soundcloud & iTunes. Great music, haunting music, killer guitar, and Prince's greatest studio vocal performance in 20 years.. Fantastic!

9. "Mr. Nelson" [***] - Sounds like this was taken from an aborted "Clouds" maxi-single. I do love this because "Clouds" was amazing, but it doesn't belong on an album.

10. "1000 X's & O's" [***] - Re-recorded version of the vault track we all know, but with less energy. Not as cool without the slick horn arrangements from the original, this is just okay. What happened to the melody? Nice vocal at the end.

11. "June" [*****] - A real gem of a track, the kind Prince used to record in his sleep. Haunting production, personal poetic lyrics like a weird diary entry, fantastic vocals.. Great closer!

-----

So there it is. Not the disaster I was expecting. The remixes can go & I still hate the cover, but the rest is great. The production is dreamy, weird, modern, creative, fresh, and Princely..

There's absolutely nothing embarrassing here. Every track has something interesting to offer. And I'm shocked to say that, because I was really expecting this album to be a load of garbage, based on the hideous new songs Prince has been releasing lately ("Stare," "Baltimore," "What If," etc) but this stuff is really entertaining..

There's no instant hits here, but there are few new classics, and a slew of solid album tracks on a new Prince album. The last time THAT happened was 1995's "The Gold Experience," and then came a long line of crap albums & shit singles devoid of creativity, charm, and purpose.. But with last years amazing "Art Official Age" (We'll ignore "Plectrum Electrum") and now this? Things are finally looking up

Now.. Is "HitNRun: Phase One" a timeless classic? No. But it's perfect for right now.. Bring on phase two (just leave "Stare" off, thanks!)
