Hmmm... I liked the original, but I'll take another listen to both. Something seems different besides just vocals.

If he has one more album, perhaps two to release soon, that might explain why this one is not anything ambitious, just a couple of fun tracks and remixes in anticipation of the more serious, "hands -on" efforts.

Haven't enjoyed a Prince album in awhile. This is from someone who saw Prince open for Rick James . Fav tracks 1000X's & O's" and "Mr. Nelson". He could actually have some singles chart from this project.

So far only like a couple songs. 1000 X's and O's is so beautiful as is June.

I love how personal June is, essentially discussing his loneliness. He echoes the similar freedom/free stance in "This Could B Us" as he discusses a woman enjoying her freedom. The reference to his own birthday (i.e. someone famous had a birthday today" further exemplifies his loneliness as he saw was "a full moon" and not the person he loves. I could be completing conflating the meaning but just my two cents. biggrin

Okay, finished first run through. Kind of in and out of the room during Mr. Nelson, but I doubt that much mattered, since what I heard of that track didn't really interest me much.

1000 X's & O's was really nice. I'm gonna say on a first listen it was the easiest to latch on to and like--but it's also familiar (though I think improved from the old outtake, and not just because it's P's vocals).

But I'm relistening to June, trying to work it out. Definitely the most intriguing track. And I somehow missed what started the burning pasta conversation when it was first referred to, so while I was reading those comments I was very confused. So that's cleared up. And actually, while I don't know that I've burned pasta, I've certainly had it boil over, and on my electric range, it has a very foul smell when that starchy water hits the hot cook top. It'll snap you out of any conversation.

A lot of unfortunate, just gimmicky things in production on much of the album. More than I noticed on AOA.

Lesser album, definitely. But it did have a nice opening few seconds, so sweet, and pretty. He should do a whole track like that lol

I fully admit maybe I've given up for now on Prince being more . . . Princey, but I actually like this album. It's obviously more of him and Josh having some fun. But if they're going to do that, I wish they would at least give us all new stuff and not rehashed songs. (Just release those on their own.)

Having said that, I think I may have about had my fill of the Josh sound. I like it for what it is, but I'm ready for Prince to give us more "Gold Standard", "1000 X's & 0's", "Time", and less "FALLINLOVE2NITE."

Except this is released through a streaming service and you probably didn't pay a cent yet (I didn't).

Not only are you (for now) getting this phase 1 for free, but they added something like six hard-to-find older releases, plus there's the entire Tidal in high quality audio.

By Phase 2, you might well have to pay the monthly fee if you want tp listen to it right away legally. Same for any phase 3. But right now, as a sonsumer, you're enjoying lots of free stuff, some great, some not so great.

I've spent most of the trial so far listening to a dozen artists other than Prince. I did not feel the need to stay up till 3:30 AM to listen to HitNRun and I don't plan on listening to it more than once today, there's so many other things to listen to. But yeah, I'll return to HitnRun perhaps two or three times this week, just to see how it feels.

Something else. More like a remix but not even a remix. I can't put it into words, I'm sure one of the other orgers will explain it better. I love clouds but I'll never listen to Mr nelson again.

Million $ Show

I hate that they sampled previous tracks, seems fleeting. And, the rest of the tune is boring...

Shut This Down

Meh, the voice and production ruins anything that could be 'fine'.

Ain't About To Stop

A bit better, but that new-age rap production ruins the potential it has. It giving me the horrors of the late 90's P. He's sampaling another tune here... is this an album or a "career mixtape"?

Like A Mack

Fun lines, but ruined by production and the crap rap-pop feel. I don't want a Beyonce/Miley/Rhianna album, I want a Prince album. Also, why are they tracking such bad vocals...?

This Could Be Us (Redux)

Fucking terrible, I didn't like the Art Official Age version... due to expectations but it was all right. this version is attrocius, mainly due to production.

FallinInLove2Nite (Redux)

I don't understand his point to re-release tracks starting with last year and again on this album considering the first version is barely out. I love Zoey but even though she didn't really mix in well on the original, I'll still lean more to that version because P's voice here is so annoying.

X's Face

Terrible, some good lines but ruined once again by unnecessary production and feel.

HardRockLover

Best track, but that's not by much because the lyrics aren't the best but atleast it isn't ruined by broduction.

Mr. Nelson (Clouds)

Dumb and wastfeul track... Atleast Affirmation I & II weren't re-hash of something before it.

1000 Os & Xs

Yes... that is how the title should read. It's a solid tune, but is probably watered down from the 1992 version. Luckily he doesn't overproduce and 'ruin' it, sadly is mixed in with all of this other shit. Would have complimented Art Official Age.

June

Pretty good, same as with the above track. It sits atop this pile of shit, when it would have fit in better with other great tunes.

Baltimore

I'm tacking this on as track 12, still better than half of HitNRun... even though it's not great. It's respectful and such but after songs like Controversy, Private Joy, Soemthing In The Water (Does Not Compute), Sign '☮' The Times... et cetera, it's just has no bite like it should.

HitNRun is barely a hit and a huge miss. 3 (4 with Baltimore) out of 12 are fine or ok. This might be my most hated album since Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic. Yes, there was a lot of meh albums after Rave but this and that are pathetic attempts and I can't believe P would release.

He needs to find 'no' people. This group and prodution team are just his puppets and he just doesn't know whats good for himself anymore.

It's just a meh mixtape and shouldn't even be titled an "album".

I like the production. Yeah, its gimmicky with lots of panning and sound efx but it does sound pretty good in my sweet spot. I like the energy of Ain't About To Stop and Like A Mack (surprisingly). I could see myself drunk at my house dancing alone to both. I've always liked Xs Face. Hardrocklover is tolerable. Yet overall I feel like I'm listening to someone who discovered Prince AFTER his classic period, became influenced and decided to make an album. It's just not a good album and as others have stated may just be his worse. There's no spark of greatness, just average to horrible songs with juvenile lyrics and invisible melodies that anyone with some talent, Garageband and synths could have created. If that's all you need from Prince then by all means enjoy. Some perspective though: I like the picture my 10 year-old nephew painted..... But if Picasso painted that same one.....

Ladies and Gents, boyz and mtha fucking girls.

It's an opinion on both sides.

Poeple like what they like.

I don't like this, I loved clouds, and like some other recent stuff.

But as an album I just won't replay it much.

Stream #'s will tell what the popular masses prefer.

For me I have been saying the same thing for a long time, 9/10 prince is following vs leading for a long time, and that to me isn't prince.

It is very tough to maintain the degree of genius he had 80-88, like stevie from 71-79, or many other amazing artists.

The problem is he refuses to bring a producer/executive who will push him to really create something no one else is doing or done. Like a Rick Rubin or whoever. But finding these young peeps who are more likely to just agree with their idol vs saying what if we tried this.

Like a great prize fighter, Prince is never out of it. takes one track either new or old vault that we all forgive and forget the misses.

Brilliant musician who can't get out of his own ego.

As expected, the album triggers mixed emotions.

On a brighter note: the Rolling Stone review mentioned that Prince will upload a new song, or one from the vault, every week. I'll see what happens and then maybe join Tidal. At this moment there's nothing special on there to get me to join.

I thought the album was okay. 7/10.

I liked the tracks 1000 O's and X's, X's face and Hardrocklover best. A lot of it just sounds like trend chasing though. I don't think it makes the album sonically bad, but it's just a bit unoriginal. I mean he even used the goddamn 'hey' thing you always hear in trap music these days on one of the songs lol

I think the worst part about this album was that no one track stood out to me. If Stare was on there it would of had a stand out track, but sadly not.

MILLION $ SHOW - The sampling of his classics at the beginning is corny and tasteless. When I had read the preview stating that Josh took "For You" and chopped it up, I was expecting something a little more creative than just stringing a bunch of Prince opening tracks together. The actual song isn't bad, in a warm-up-on-the-treadmill kind of way, and it is over before it becomes offensive.

SHUT THIS DOWN - The musical equivalent of your 60 year old theology professor pulling onto campus in a cherry-red Miata. His young protege, feigning excitement, tries to fist bump him, and the confused professor clasps the fist with his entire hand and tries to shake it. (The bass at the end is sick as fuck tho!!!!!!)

AINT ABOUT 2 STOP - It's intriguing to hear Prince trying to sound current. But I feel like Rihanna was doing this like 5 years ago. The "ow-wah" part that kicks off a bass solo is pretty cool, and makes the song a little more Prince-ish.

LIKE A MACK - lol lol lol lol Go 'head, Prince. I'm not mad at you. We all need to feel like we're still cool sometimes. "Whatcha sposed ta do in a club fulla thots." LMFAAAAAOOOOOOOO!! This one is so bad it's good. Fuck, I like it. It's kind of like when I first heard Right The Wrong, and couldn't stop laughing every time the chorus came on. Or watching Showgirls. It brings me joy.

THIS COULD B US - I don't really hate this remix, but I do prefer the original. It sounds fine within the context of this record. I would have preferred this production on a new song, though. I do like that it omits the "cage 2 my dove" line, as well.

FALLINLOVE2NITE - Breezy and fun, I guess. Even if the chords on the verses progress a little too similarly to LRC. I think the updates made the song better.

THE X'S FACE - It's starts off kinda cool, but by the end I'm wishing it would have gone somewhere else, because it feels more like an interlude. Cool groove and vocal delivery, and I do like the production.

HARDROCKLOVER - I never really got into this one, even though there are elements that I like. It has a great mood to it. For me, it's a little more likable in the context of the album. I love the guitar lines.

MR NELSON - CLOUDS is one of my favorite recent Prince tunes, and if this song was like the b-side on the CLOUDS cassingle, I wouldn't be mad at it. This has no place on an album, though. The tempo change section at the end sort of kills the cool factor me.

1000 X's and O's - Love the smooth lead line. The beat and bass make you move. I miss hearing this kind of R&B on the radio. If I have to fault the song, I'd say it's the vocals. Prince should have put more soul into it, because I don't believe him. Sounds a little flat.

JUNE - Interesting lyrics, if only because they seem personal. I think if a larger majority of his current lyrics were this interesting, more people would connect to them. Too bad the melody is kind of non-existent. It kind of reminds me of the pointlessness of Breathe, which also just seemed more like an interlude. Odd and unsatisfying way to end the album IMO.

Is this the worst Prince album ever? Nah. I still think MPLSound keeps the crown. There are certainly things to like about it, and I'll give it a few chances before I put it away completely. LIKE A MACK is one I will be keeping for sure, if only for novelty's sake.
