Top 5 Artists that you love as much/almost as much as Prince Prince will always be my favorite artist. No one else gets as much listening time as Prince.
Who else do you love as much as (or almost as much as) Prince.
Let's try to keep the lists short... top 5 or 6, just to keep it easy to wrap our brains around. A list of 20+ artists I never heard of just gets lost and hard to absorb. Also, I consider most of Prince's associated artists (The Time, The Family, Vanity 6, etc to be part of the Prince grup.)
My List:
*BILLY IDOL: Probably born of my love of all things 1980's. Still putting out greatness. Check out "Devil's Playground" album. New album out Oct 20.
*NEW ORDER: 80's new wave and club dance music, blended with cryptic AND personal lyrics. "Republic" is a great album, not to mention classics like "Low Life" and "Brotherhood"
*NINE INCH NAILS: Trent Reznor lists Prince as a major influence. Musically both VERY different and similar at the same time. "Pretty Hate Machine" (1988-89) was a big favorite of mine, when I read the liner notes where he thanked Prince as a big influence, I said "oh, ok. that makes sense."
*DEPECHE MODE: The last two albums have been very spotty. A brilliant track or two, and the rest very unremarkable. "Playing the Angel" had some real greatness. "Pain that I'm used to", "Precious", "Suffer Well". "Music For the Masses" is their defining album. "Violator" is a highlight.
*INCUBUS: Another artis who claims Prince as a major influence. "Make Yourself" (2000-2001) album is Incubus-perfection from beginning to end. "Stellar", "I Miss You", "Consequence", and my all-time favorite Incubus track "Nowhere Fast". "Morning View" album is pretty solid as well.
*Honorable mentions: SADE, NO DOUBT, GEORGE MICHAEL (just missed the cut off on my top 5).

Robert Smith / The Cure .
Frank Black / Pixies .
(pre strays) Jane's Addiction / Porno for Pyros . Jimi Hendrix . Bob Marley . Bob Dylan .
(I only listen to prince more because he puts out more, but the above all have as many great songs as prince and quite frankly ... less total rubbish to sort thru)

There's no one who really comes close, however Todd Rundgren's A Wizard, A True Star is my third favorite album of all time.
Artists that I highly rate and consider to have a very strong discography. Todd Rundgren Jimi Hendrix The Pfunk mob, Funkadelic,Parlament, Bootsy Sly And The Family Stone. Stevie Wonder Bruce Springsteen. Steely Dan/ Donald Fagen. Prefab Sprout Terence trent D'arby D'angelo (only 2 albums, but two stone cold classics) Outkast. If Janelle Monae continues as she's been doing she could well join the above. [Edited 10/15/14 14:13pm] [Edited 10/15/14 14:46pm] | |

Gene 'n' Dean Weener (sadly broken up ) Trent Reznor/N I N (and all his collaborators. Just great musical vision) I give a great nod to real 60's - 70's - 80's rock. (Too many bands to name, but you just might know who I mean to list ) Adam, Adam, & Mike. Them Beasty Boys. (RIP, Yauch. I'm originally from NY. 'nuff said) James Brown. (he laid down the law for anyone afterwards) If i get a number six, it would have to be just one song... "Magic Man" by Heart. . Prost!
