New topic PrintableThe first place it popped up was on YouTube just before it got to iTunes and there were a few links to it and the first thing that stood out was the "poor" sound quality, Bootlegs are in better quality. So i just thought it was a "poor youtube" link, NOPE, bought it from iTunes and same poor quality, and honestly i like the song, but the quality is so poor that it makes it almost unlistenable. Not sure why he let it out like this, i mean i know he doesnt care about "singles" so they may have just let it go, cause almost everything else "singles" that is, that he has put out, they all have sounded OK, its ironic that the best of his songs, sounds the worst, and its licensed to Warner, which makes me think he really wanted to just toss it out there, that this may even be a demo. Love the live version from Vegas, but not a huge fan of this studio version...

The only thing I like about this song is the distortion, the musical breakdown, if you will. Otherwise it's a typical Prince ballad. Just a mix of things all heard before.

it's just inexcusable. * * *

He announces that the remasters are FINALLY coming after all these years - and then releases possibly the WORST mastered song of his entire career.
God save us all... This is an abomination, I can't even comment on the song itself since it sounds so bad.
If this is what the new album remasters are going to sound like - he can lock them up in the vault and forget the code... [Edited 4/19/14 14:50pm] Hard to believe I've been on the org for over 25 years now!

Listen to the word "cool" around 3:35. I don't think it's distorted as much as every single sound is so squashed up to the maximum that is loses clarity and sounds messy.
But still, it's nice to have this released! And I do think it will be fixed. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Really like this track. Great vocal delivery. Would not sound out of place On his early 90's albums like diamonds and pearls, although it first reminded me A little bit of Crucial. If it breaks when it bends, you better not put it in.

Ahh now that you point that out I can hear it, but I'd been listening to it all day and didn't notice anything before that. Thanks Change it one more time..

It's always been code for God--all the way back to "Baby" on For You. "God, what are we gonna do?" "God, God, God, It's You, It's You that I truly adore" "I hope our God has eyes just like you"
What did you think that song was about? A baby?
Crazy people. | |

I've only heard a stream so far, so I can't say anything for sure about the sound quality, but I DO NOT UNDERSTAND why the lasers are in there. I'm used to overly literal unnecessary (to my judgment) sound effects in Prince, but usually I know why he put them in. I don't know what they're doing in this song.
Which I think is probably a pretty good song--but I don't want to listen to the streaming version anymore until I can actually buy it and get whatever the "official" sound is going to be. That way my judgement won't be tainted by how terrible the stream was. [Edited 4/19/14 16:25pm]

That's about God too. A million days actually means "A million Years" (because God's days are equal to years in prophecy) and the only thing that could feel like it was gone for a million years would be the eternal God.
"God" though--that one's about chocolate chip cookies.

Exactly. I am very surprised. It's a beautiful song and very promising for a new album. The last time I was excited about a Prince-release? I don't even remember. Now I am! -----------------------------------------

Still not out yet in Australia but I literally JUST saw them discussing it on the Weekend Today show on Channel 9. Some of the hosts were asked to react. The female presenter said she was a huge fan and it was "very mellow," while one of the fellas said "He sounds like a lady singing."

Guys, I have a credible friend that states this song was intented to be used for the Gatsby movie. At the end of the day, do I know for sure? No. But listen the lyrics as if it's written about Jay Gatsby and all of life's excesses (big pool, big parties, big house (waking up in places you never would believe) etc...

The "baby" he is talking about is not 'God' nor is it 'a baby' until the very last line. It's a woman that is pregnant!

Anyone who thinks this sort of audio quality is acceptable in the retail market needs a new pair of ears. I think everyone's ears have been ruined by years of listening to compressed garbage mp3 quality, that's the only way people could rationalize this quality as being ok. Prince should be ashamed of putting this subpar quality track, where is the quality control ? And still I haven't even talked about the actual track yet. Hard to believe I've been on the org for over 25 years now!

Both the lasers and the extreme clipping, distortion, over compressed sound. I do not think that even Prince would consider this to be great sounding. The man that is promoting analog recordings and vinyl can't at the same time support digital clipping and distortion. It doesn't make any sense. He is testing us, or saving the "good" masters until he can release it himself. My Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/tundrah

Oh Prince fans can be so anal retentive, it's like being with a bunch of virgin nuns in Tijuana. Like there's never been a good Prince song with a bit of a compression problem.
This song is great -- so is Fallinginlovetonite by the way. It's not the best he ever wrote? Wake up, it's competing against hundreds of songs he wrote, some of the most sonically iconic of our era. It's like if people had been waiting for Picasso to top Guernica or Michelangelo the Sistine Chapel murals. Prince is custodian of his vision of many of our musical idioms, and his recent output shows him to be in full control of his talents.
He's been pedestrian and phoning it in for too long, no question, but he's also been in an extreme musical purgatory, a contractual alien to his own seminal creations. He did make many mistakes, but you have to acknowledge its painful for any artist to find oneself divorced from one's own higly original and personal art.
You can find flaws as a fan and feel he could have done a little better with this and that, but in the end, as an artist, he's creating what he wants to create just fine with the assistance he wants to get, and he's positioned to be remembered by history as one of the greatest musical prodigy that ever lived.
This is especially true following yesterday's Warner deal, which opens the door to a renewed appreciation for Prince's talent and contribution, given that there is a possibility of documenting almost superhuman feats of creativity and mastery, solely focusing on his golden period.
The rest, what has been issued since he left the label, will in time be rediscovered -- at least the best of it.

I have heard a lot of hissing and crunches and pops myntunes lately...I had chalked it up to listening through my shitty phone with shitty equalizers and shitty headphones. While I'm sure the shitty this, that, and the other has much tondo with it, maybe much more has to do with mastering and the stuff y'all b talking about. There's a plethora of y'all talking and it don't appear as if y'all talking out the side of y'alls ass. Just for the record: ....i am truly ashamed about my descent into the literary land of y'alls and yonders...it just...ummm...well, happened'...I 'reckon'...

I think there is a danger people are getting carried away with this track. Its great, but its no leap above other good tracks in the last 10 years.
I think people are hyped about the WB deal and are connecting this to the 80's, at least mentally.
Like I said, great track, but so was Groovy Potential and Ain't Gonna Miss U.
That said, an album with all three tracks I mention hear is an album worth listening to.

It's a legitimate topic of conversation because, as you can see from the numerous people who have posted about it, it's a serious flaw in the release.
The song itself is amazing. But it's not "anal retentive" to comment about what a botched mastering job this is. * * *
