I think there is a danger people are getting carried away with this track. Its great, but its no leap above other good tracks in the last 10 years.

I think people are hyped about the WB deal and are connecting this to the 80's, at least mentally.

Like I said, great track, but so was Groovy Potential and Ain't Gonna Miss U.

That said, an album with all three tracks I mention hear is an album worth listening to.

I was thinking about that earlier because I listened to this and Groovy Potential back to back and I think they should be on a new album together because to me theyre two of the strongest tracks he's done in recent years (and I say this as someone who's relatively enjoyed the 3EG tracks, but these two are just on a different level). My only hesitation is that the production of GP compared to TB is lightyears better so itd be nice if he polished the track for the album ideally.

Change it one more time..

They r both very 'mature' trax...not sure if mature is an entirely accurate adjective, but they both avoid much of the sillyness(said sillyness is something I THOROUGHLY enjoy about prince records, don't get me wrong) that appears in much of princes music. They would seem out of place on a 3EG record(judging from the 'billed' dates and releases fix/screw/pretzel/plectrum/chaos/hair), but both(GROOVY/BREAK) sound like they should appear on the SAME Album.

I'm just gonna try to ignore the way Whitney makes me feel all worthless with her dismissive look, and say--hey, if you want to live on the surface, dealing just with the literal, obvious, and (oh so limiting) accurate reading of the song's lyrics, go right ahead.

Another possibility is that it's about Warner Brothers. That's what that other song that talked about working it out was about, right?

In all honesty, I don't think The Breakdown is about God. And I don't think A Million Days is about God. And I don't think Baby Is about God. And I don't think God is about chocolate chip cookies.

But those aren't literal horses in Little Red Corvette. So there.

Or should we get married right away'
Whatever you decide,
I'll still love you, baby
And we'll grow stronger everyday
Baby, what are we gonna do'
I barely have enough money for 2
Baby, what are we gonna do'
I don't want to regret what I've done to you
I never would've thought that this would happen
To a very careful man like me
But baby, pretty baby, we're gonna work it out, yeah
I love you... I love you, can't you see'

Baby, baby, baby
It's you, 'said it's you that I truly adore
Ooo, baby, baby (baby, baby)
Ooo, baby, babe...
I hope our baby has eyes just like yours (just like yours)

The "baby" he is talking about is not 'God' nor is it 'a baby' until the very last line. It's a woman that is pregnant!

Prince's business dealing with L.A Reid and Epic Records up until this point was just to distribute "FALLINLOVE2NITE".

Why was Epic Records' L.A. Reid having a PlectrumElectrum listening party last February?

Maybe he was playing PlectrumElectrum just to play his new album for an executive he knows. What is known is that Prince gave "FALLINLOVE2NITE" to Epic Records to promote at radio.

Heard the song for the first time on YT, and wow, this is great! Didn't expect that.

Together with Groovy Potential, this is why I love Prince.

I'm not very impressed with the 3rdeyegirl songs, but these songs are something else.

I'm a long time Prince fan, and as such, I loved the news that he's back at Warner!

Now if he could only reassemble "The Revolution" (hey, don't blame me for dreaming!) wink

As for the "Breakdown" song... well, I didn't like it very much sad

The only good things I can say about it is that it's not awful and that he got back to screaming - some of his best and most energetic songs had this intense quality ("When Doves Cry", "The Beautiful Ones" etc.).

Of his latest non-album songs, the ones I liked were "Breakfast Can Wait" and "FallinLove2Nite".

As for album ones, I really, really love "Act of God" and "Dear Mr. Man" and like "Dance 4 Me", "(There'll Never Be) Another Like Me" and "Chelsea Rogers" a lot.

Oh Prince fans can be so anal retentive, it's like being with a bunch of virgin nuns in Tijuana. Like there's never been a good Prince song with a bit of a compression problem.

This song is great -- so is Fallinginlovetonite by the way. It's not the best he ever wrote? Wake up, it's competing against hundreds of songs he wrote, some of the most sonically iconic of our era. It's like if people had been waiting for Picasso to top Guernica or Michelangelo the Sistine Chapel murals. Prince is custodian of his vision of many of our musical idioms, and his recent output shows him to be in full control of his talents.

He's been pedestrian and phoning it in for too long, no question, but he's also been in an extreme musical purgatory, a contractual alien to his own seminal creations. He did make many mistakes, but you have to acknowledge its painful for any artist to find oneself divorced from one's own higly original and personal art.

You can find flaws as a fan and feel he could have done a little better with this and that, but in the end, as an artist, he's creating what he wants to create just fine with the assistance he wants to get, and he's positioned to be remembered by history as one of the greatest musical prodigy that ever lived.

This is especially true following yesterday's Warner deal, which opens the door to a renewed appreciation for Prince's talent and contribution, given that there is a possibility of documenting almost superhuman feats of creativity and mastery, solely focusing on his golden period.

The rest, what has been issued since he left the label, will in time be rediscovered -- at least the best of it.

[Edited 4/19/14 18:25pm]

You can accuse us of being analy retentive but it doesn't change facts. Yes The Breakdown is a great song, but so is everything on Purple Rain. If PR gets a remaster in the manner of The Breakdown, (or any recent release), it will end up sounding worse than the original release.

Prince once claimed that digital music hurt his ears, saying it was all numbers. Maybe if he looked into what those numbers represented then he would get the music released properly and it wouldn't hurt the ears of anyone.

The fact is, we shouldn't even be having the opportunity to be discussing the mastering, it should just be done properly then we wouldn't have to tarnish a thread about a great song.

RIP sad

HH--

It was a joke, and it obviously failed. Prince sometimes has multiple meanings--I just think those 4 are all pretty straightforward (and all pretty good--well, actually I think God is simplistic lyrically, but truly fantastic as a total song, considering the music and, mostly, the incredible vocal performance). For me, The Breakdown just doesn't work as a song about God, and if someone tries to make it into one, then they'd be missing the good song it actually is. The lyrics, if seen as being about God, wouldn't be that good. The literal is exactly what you should stick to with that song.

Also, the "crazy people" comment (which wasn't seriously intended) wasn't even directed at you, but at the person who originally suggested the God idea: Genesia. Who called you literal (with an lol emoticon). And I assumed the original comment was actually a joke to begin with. Apparently people were taking this seriously. I sometimes have problems with tone online.

I'm glad I didn't go on to combine that post with the serious comment I almost added, but I'll go ahead and do it now, because I've meant to say this for awhile.

I like the Mandela quote you're using as your signature.

Reminds me of Eye Hate U. But better.

Personally, I think the lyrics are a bit weak, but I love the line "there's a door that u can walk through where there used to be a wall."

Epic! That line is so powerful and in your face. It speaks of how much faith he once had in the relationship, and how he once felt.

To me, that's the signature line of the song.

Very good tune. I love the vocals more so than the words, but this is a VERY good Prince cut.

Thank you, P.

Prince will figure it out. Record a song at PP. Make an mp3 of that song, put it on a $300 laptop from Kmart with 49 cent speakers. If he gets the compression right it will sound good for most if the org. But the org won't figure it out.

No... really, that's how it SOUNDS. What an amazing screw up:

1. Press and Media Announce his "win" and ownership of masters

2. P. Releases a new, HORRIBLY mastered song

The distortion is the musical equivalent to what the song is all about: a breakdown! That's how it's meant to be. Actually this is the most interesting and edgiest part of a rather unoriginal Prince ballad!

I knew it wouldn't take a day before someone found something to criticize. The latest is that The Breakdown is not well mastered enough, there's compression and some compare this to the Crystal Ball fiasco, no less.

Cue to someone saying he's already purposedly messing with Warner, or it'x a ploy to make you buy the album where the perceived problem with undoubtedly be corrected but you won't care for any of the other songs, thereby screwing you anew, etc., etc.

I wasn't going to post this because I love Prince so much. But my first thought after listening to this song twice was "knock, knock who's there?" I'm not sure why that was the thought, but it was. Knock, Knock.....Who's There? Weird, but true.

Prince is obviously excited about the song since he released it.......so I'm happy for that!
