'The Breakdown' is a really great song. I would put it up there with 'Electric Intercourse' and 'Empty Room' (yes, that good)

The live performance at Montreaux is even better and will hopefully surface soon.

The "saddest story ever been told" does not involve wanting a large swimming pool and getting wasted at New Year's though! lol

Dave1992

In contrast to a lot of other newer songs, he actually sounds bothered and 'up for it' on this one, which makes a huge difference in songwriting and delivery for Prince. It sounds inspired.

I also like that he went all out on his vocals and returned to his more modern trademark sound again (Emancipation, 3121).

However, the lyrics walk a very thin line between typical Prince-drama-quirky and slightly cringeworthy. I mean, he would always through in completely weird banal lines inbetween deep poetry, but in those cases they were full of charme. When a whole (and deeply emotional) song evolves around semi-emotional lyrics, it takes away from the magic a tad bit.

But, all in all, a refreshing and surprising song. The best for more than a year now (on par with Groovy Potential).

So, with it being Warner's licensed even if on NPG do we think this will be marketed like Fallinloveisshite? Not heard official release as not on uk itunes yet - but will this be pushed to be a hit and for airplay?

its a quality track...certainly a level above what he has released in the last few years...i would have liked a bit of guitar at the end but at least this sounds like a proper prince song..

This is an utterly fantastic, brilliant song. Up there with his best, certainly the best thing he's released in the last few years.

Brilliant! Keep it up Mr. Nelson!

Just heard it for first time and I'm impressed. Has loads of classic Prince ingredients. 80s keyboard progressions, 90s fat bass and a gorgeous vocal line and a lush simple chorus. You can hear Prince getting lost in those screams he breaks into.
After some of the utter shite of the last few years this is more like it.
I'll even overlook that he was playing Astro Wars during the recording. It is Prince after all.

I keep checking iTunes but still not there in the uk. It's frustrating being a fan sometimes. I've been dying to hear this song for about a year, it gets released And I still can't get it.

Good song. Intro reminds me of Prefab Sprout's 'When Love Breaks Down' which is not a bad thing.
Can do without the Star Wars sound effects but this is Prince after all. You're always likely to get some unnecessary embellishments.

OK...I've been looking for a place I can buy this song with an android phone. While in the middle of my search, I found some live version whose opening lyrics are, "Prince, I want to have your babies!". How bizzare to have something like that in a song.....lol....

Anyways...I figured its an iTunes exclusive as I can't find a purchase-able one anywhere. All the purchase-not-necessary versions are not official studio versions. Makes sense seeing as how a purchase isn't necessary.

I appreciated this song when I had the crappy sounding bootleg. The studio stream - I live in the UK so can't but it yet - doesn't disappoint. Certainly has trademark Prince running through. The screams also don't feel as forced as on on another favorite track of mine - The Dance on 3121.

Well dne Prince, this is a massive step in the right direction. This and Wow are certainly more than welcome. cool

It is severely brickwalled for loudness with slight distortion on drum hits and when the voices get layered and loud at the climax. Bad mastering!

.

Is it in mp3 format? If so, I'll pass. I don't do iTunes.

Okay, I just heard it from elsewhere. Gotta say, I love his vocals on this. I wonder when he recorded them? Yeah, the laser zaps are a bit out of place, but we all know how much P loves his sound effects... I think his favourite has always been a ticking clock.

The Breakdown Lyrics
Listen 2 me closely as the story unfolds
This could be the saddest story ever been told
I used 2 want the house with the biggest pool
Reminiscing now, I just feel like a fool
U keep breakin me down, down, down
Keep breakin me down down down
Keep breakin me down down down
I used 2 throw the party every New Year's Eve
First one intoxicated, last one 2 leave
Waking up in places that u would never believe
Give me back the time, u can keep the memories
U keep breakin me down, down, down
Keep breakin me down down down
Keep breakin me down down down
Every book I read
Said that I would meet somebody like you
Whenever I was sorry, so sorry for the things I used to do
A journal full of numbers that I used to go through
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, all behind me now, all because of U
You keep breaking me down.... I don't wanna.... don't wanna go down down down.....
You've seen every door, every door you can walk through, (in Montreux, "there's a door you can walk through")
Where there used to be a wall
I don't care, come on baby,
As long as U catch me
forever and ever and then some more (in Montreux he said "if there's a fall"/other times it's "when I fall")
The closer we get,
the closer U get,
the closer I get.
I don't wanna, don't wanna.....
2 the breakdown.

This them? I'm not certain cuz I can't download the song...android/apple conflict.

I AGREE! The question I have: Is this a new track or something from the vault?

It's leaps and bounds above anything else released the past year or so. Sounds like classic Prince.

I think Fall in love tonight was a one off, it was released through Epic Records so hopefully marketed differently smile

WOW! Now this is AWESOME! P announces the new WB deal and BAM a long awaited instant classic gets released on iTunes!!!

So great to finally hear the entire thing and it does not disappoint. Besides the sound quality being less then stellar (what is up wit dat P?) it sure is better the Dakota version that we've been listening to for the past year.

Well played P and WB! clapping Things just got super exciting in the world of P!
