Right.. he said it was largely ignored UNTIL the video came out and it blew up. Prince obviously doesn't realize the importance of a good video and the fact that he needs it to be on youtube. Well, yeah compare to the legendary status he had in the history books, it's weird that his new song might walk past some of his classic hits in plays on Spotify without a video. IMO that means a bunch of isteners has probably little experience in listening to Prince, but could have found this worth checking out. I assume that the most active streaming users are everything between 12-40 years. His biggest and loyal fans often have his CDs, ripped to computer or vinyl. Yesterday's Pince news had a big residual effect on Amazon. Fell back to the 1300s in sales and today song is up to #698 Paid in MP3 Songs.

Happy is a good song, prince's song is awful. You should wonder why there are stations who play this dreck. "The Breakdown" is a much better song, this should be a radio hit. I wonder why it's not. |

Daft Punk, Alive 2007. The real Daft Punk: hard heavy techno that just builds beautifully and takes you back further to the early days when the scene was at its peak. Incredible musicians who seem equally happy playing to a warehouse of pillheads as colaborating with the flavour of the month to gain chart success. | |

Can't say I'm surprised by the poor chart showing. Ultimately, this is Prince's fault. Although the Musicology era was great - historic concert tour, good video and radio airplay - a multitude of poor decisions since then appears to have used up any clout he may have had for producing another hit. IMO it started at the end of Musicology, with the release of Cinnamon Girl, which was destined for zero airplay. Nice song, just not an ideal single for several reasons, mostly political. Next single: Te Amo Corazon from 3121 - possibly the least radio-friendly song on an album containing several potential R&B hits. Shortly after that was Beautiful, Loved, & Blessed, which was too long for radio (see lengthy instrumental ending). I could give more examples. Essentially, every album from Musicology onward has had potential R&B hits, but those are not the songs being released. He seems to release songs purely because he likes them instead of what is best suited for radio. I think Prince needs someone in his camp that he respects and is not afraid to tell him "No. That's not a good choice." If there was, then I think he would probably have had numerous R&B and Pop 100 chart songs over the past ten years (a la Call My Name). | |
