Fallinlove2nite is this week at #3 in the US Spotify viral charts with over 34000 plays...

in the UK at#3 with 19000 plays...

Globally the song is at number five at the viral chart...

I had to look what the viral chart is:

"The 50 most viral songs on Spotify this week. Updated every Tuesday, virality is determined by streams divided by shares. "

Katy Perry with dark hoers in the US in comparison is #1 with 1.9 Million plays...

http://www.spotifyartists.com/charts/

Sooo...does that mean that a song that is streamed 10,000 times through only 10 shares is ranked higher than a song that is streamed 100,000 times but with 5,000 shares? Streams divided by shares, that type of thing?

Clive was ousted from Arista not long after Rave was released! Now Prince is doing business with Clive's then replacement LA REID! Who has managed NOW to do more with one single, than Clive did with an whole album handed to him by Prince. Case closed!!!!

The $11.million U talking is very debatable......

Stop making excuses lol Rave flopped because it just wasn't a strong album and the wrong first single was chosen.Prince is a notoriously difficult person to work with, especially back then when he was still very 'anti-record company'.

rolleyes

If Clive can turn P Diddy into a rapper on top of the charts. He could have made Rave a top seller also if he wanted to. Prince did his part & was VERY professional about it(even as far as going on TRL to promote it).He just used Prince as another notch on his belt! When Clive figured out he couldn't make Rave a top seller like "SuperNatural". He threw Prince under the bus like he did Whitney during her "Crack is wack" years...

STOP saying it flopped! That album went GOLD with NO HIT SINGLE. If Clive would have did his job it would have sold in the millions with a hit. But ultimately even Clive couldn't stop destiny from taking over. In just a few short months he ended up jobless himself. So no one lost really.

Your post is full of contradictions. And I don't know the ins and outs between Prince and Clive, but simply put, Rave just wasn't that good an album. It had a few good songs I really like (Strange But True, Rave, Wherever U Go, Pretty Man, I Trust U But), and a lot of bad songs, with horrid production.

It has happened before. Mariah Cary and her problems with Tommy Mottala after they divorced.

Berry Gordy tanking some of Dinah Ross's projects and spending little time or money on Marvin Gaye.

LA Reid dumping Left Eye's project in Japan.

Too many stories of artist questioning their contracts and payments and suddenly CDs receive no promotion and I will not even go into the story of Kelly Clarkson and her issues with Clive.

Clive was fired from Arista shortly after Rave and the 11 million dollar advance for CD that did not get promoted well and could of had better material on it may have been the reason. I know Prince is not always right but in the end it is not the artist who is responsible for marketing and promoting the music. In addtion, the record company can always send the artist back to the drawing board without paying out 11 million up front.

I'd started a different thread for this, but it was pointed out by a mod that it should probably be sent to one of the already going threads (I was actually told to talk about it on the Funknroll studio version thread, but I assume that was a mistake):

So anyway, here's what I said there.

Freegal is a download site that libraries get subscriptions to that allow their patrons to download a certain number of tracks a week as part of library memberships. Anyway, when my daughter went on today, the number 4 track on their National Top 100 was "Fallinluv2nite." It does look like Sony is the major provider for Freegal, so take that with a grain of salt.

Two weeks into the campaign now and, for the 40th time in this thread, I am taking a pessimistic approach. There is just nothing to indicate that the song is going to catch on enough to be a hit. Airplay is not growing across the board (though pretty neat that as many stations added as they did) and sales are flat. Epic has done their best, great job actually, but just an uphill battle.

What exactly has Epic done? I've seen ads all over the place as I move over the internet, but I've seen ads for several of the recent releases--I'm an obvious target, apparently. But for the great mass of people, what exactly has the campaign consisted of?

People know that you can request songs to be played on the radio right? Now sure how effective it is, but I've seen other artists ask their fans to request their song on the radio through spin.fm:

Here

Change it one more time..

The song needs a really good video, and Prince needs to perform it on a few high-profile TV shows (like 'Ellen' or The Jimmy Fallon late night show).Epic has done all they can do.

Seems the song won`t become a real hit, but at least the song was played a bit on top 40 radio worldwide and from the reactions on twitter etc some people enjoyed it...even younger ones...

Think P should now concentrate on PE wink

This wont be a hit..its too silly song.He needs to stop trying to sound like a 15 year old.His older songs had more maturity and respect...We need an elder statesman to come up with something with a deep sound and meaning that will connect with people. Prince could be the elder statesman if he could come up with some thing like marvin "whats going on", but this new song is poor, poor, poor.

Have I somehow missed it or has the New Girl episode not aired in the UK yet? In which case I wouldn't expect sales to peak here until after that, there will be people that aren't big P fans but just like the song.

Ok, as the OP of this thread I am declaring that the song has offically done all it is going to do. There is nothing in airplay or sales that convinces me otherwise. No video, radio resistance, mainstream audience resistance, ageism, "the song just isn't that good", whatever reason we want to attribute but Prince is not going to return to the Top 40. And as Stuart Smalley says, "That's...okay."

Despite what I may have sounded like on this thread, I have not been obessing over the hit status of this song. It was neat watching it the first few days when it was zooming up the Amazon and Itunes charts. It was great to see some Top 40 stations add it, truly a big deal. I remember years ago it was a big deal that there were a handful of stations playing "The One U Wanna C"...there were over 20 stations playing Prince next to Pitbull and JT and Neon Trees and Rixton for this one and there is something to be said about that.

I am a chart guy, I like charts and stats and numbers. But I don't equate an artist's worth or value but how many 16 years olds are jamming to the song on their Iphones. Well, I did when I WAS a 16 year old but that was a long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Now I am 41 and I am more concerned with my falling credit score and the grades my daughters make at school.

So anyway, I probably won't post on this thread any more. Feels like a missed opportunity but in the end the world will keep spinning and PlectrumElectrum will still continue not being released. If some magical turnaround occurs, I'll be bakc to join the fun but my gut (and three decades of watching the charts) says it ain't going to happen with this one.

It is neat that this is the most successful thread I have ever started, no credit to me just the fact that I think a lot of you out there are like me and miss the days when Prince was making hit singles.

All good things they say never last...
