The way to look at this?

The song wasn't his best ever, but it was credible EDM and it got ok airplay with little fanfare and no album out. It proves that he could have hits if he did things more conventionally and released the first single of an album with a video and had it promoted to death like everyone else.

Whatever he's trying to do, I still enjoy the 3EG stuff way more -- this song was fun but I'm more into his rock and funk side.

Just because the song has fallen to 508 on Amazon sales chart does not mean we should be writing any epitaphs. Oh to hell with it, I am going to go back to taking care of my MyTalkingTom. I tried, Prince. Last one out turn out the lights.

Pharrell introduced his song Happy last year, but no one caught on. Now into another year it's all over the radio. Two different songs, but there's always that slight chance Fallinluv2nite may eventually catch on.

No... There is no chance. Happy is actually a good record and makes people get up and move. It's inspiring. Fallinlove is...well I'll be nice. Not very good

Agreed. Furthermore, "Happy" was also helped by an innovative yet daring (though successful) concept of the 24-hour video...

nod

Prince used to say "I don't follow trends, they just follow me"... I'll leave that one in the same place as Fallinlove2night.

lol

In this YouTube dominated age, a music video would certainly help the song do well.

Can we please stop trying to latch on to someone else's chart hit with the thinking "IF ONLY HE" we have been doing this since prince's last crossover hit 20 years ago which was "Most Beautiful Girl" sorry people PRINCE's last cross over hit single was two decades ago, when Kurt Cobain was still alive, Mariah Carey was still recording songs that mattered, Cd's actually were selling, the internet was a baby, and music and radio was still an importance to people. So stop saying this song can be a hit with Promotion and catch fire just like Pharrell did, stop trying to make PRINCE into the next "fluke" hit, give it up, whats next, "Oh Prince can sell if he does a record with Adele, then goes on Oprah and does a special, then does a week on Jimmy Fallon, then does a give away at radio etc...." LET IT GO. He releases music and it goes where it goes case closed, you are talking about a 55 year old man that does not care about some kind of "fluke" hit again, if he did, he'd do PURPLE RAIN 2 the movie, release it same day, release the soundtrack same day, do a world tour with those artists, get in the bath tub again and do "When Doves Cry (2014)mix" let it go, its never gonna happen.

Prince must care at least a little about at least getting it out there because he let Epic Records promote it. And something worked at least a little because some stations added the song and a few more out there might follow suit. I don't think the song being a hit is going to rock Prince's world THAT much...he has got the attention span of a pre-schooler who just ate a bag of Halloween Candy when it comes to projects these days. Some of us who follow the charts and miss the days when Prince had at least one Top 10 every year for a decade care more than Prince does. But IF Prince did care a lot, if he had a video out there, if he had released the song right after the Super Bowl, an IF here or there and this is the closest that Prince would have come to the Top 40 in a long time. And that does have some significance.

He did all this for Musicology to be honest, and it sold the album but none of the songs crossed over and they had video play, especially Musicology the single, it even had speciall showings and shows around it, the album sold a legit million the other 1.8 million were give aways, which was ok that was part of the rule then. But the thing is that was a decade ago when CD's still sold very well, albums were still debuting with 200-500,000 weeks now that is a "blue moon" happening, you are lucky to see a record with 100,000 sold week one and that is with promotion. So it being a decade later, also Prince does not have the benefit of what he did then, a grammy performance with Beyonce tied into the 20th anniversary of PR, there is nothing on the table for the 30th anniversary of PR, and thats a shame even if he didnt want to be part of a rerelease to at least let something out to get some light on him. But this song is going nowhere, good or bad is not relevant, even a video would not help it, Rock N Roll love affair had a video and it faded into oblivion. Screwdriver was supposed to be a big deal but outside of US here no one cared. This year marks the 20th year since Prince's last crossover hit "Most Beautiful Girl" nothing since has come close to having that kind of impact across the board regardless of the "game" he was playing, Emancipation and all of its Promo had nothing to show for it single wise, barely getting RB play with "somebody" and "betcha by", "Holy River" went nowhere at Top 40. And sure there was RB play, "Call my Name" "Satisfied" "Future Baby Mama" etc...but these were far from Hit singles that got him any notice. Im just saying that its a different world now, Prince should be looking more at "albums" at this point, i know he prefers them, he said it on "arsenio" that he is old school in a singles market.

I just feel that everyone is latching onto something that isnt gonna happen, been there done that, we gotta accept reality of who he is and what the music world is like. We cant all complain and say charts dont matter and then cry when prince doesnt have a chart hit, well which is it? we care or we don't, if the album is good at least we got it from him, if it's not good and sells a few million what is the difference?

As I come to grips with the aftermath and the realization that Fallinlove2nite (currently number 540 on Amazon) is not going to be a hit I, with great hesitation, ask this question. Would a guest rap from Pitbull have helped. He could have called Prince Mr. 612, maybe tried to rhyme Pitbull with "adorkable". Threw the Spanish word for purple or funky in there. Was this a missed opportunity and is it too late? I am under the impression that Mr. Bull would read the phone book if the money was right.

Does anyone think Musicology was supposed to appeal to a pop audience? Why are RnB hits not considered a measure of success. Why is having the Lotus Flower project sit on the album charts for over a year with no promotion whatsoever considered successful?

We all know the music world has changed a lot over the last decade ad the quality of music is much worst and the sales have continued to plummet. I do not expect P to have the bang up year he had with Musicology due to those conditions but writting him off completly is absurd since it has been done time and time again and he managed to prove all of his naysayers wrong. It is too early to write him off.

Awesome information. Someone has to keep this thread going until its inevitable appearance on the Billboard Top 100. I have given up for now and am currently in a tent at my local Wal-Mart lining up to be the first to buy a copy of the new PlectrumElectrum CD. I'm getting a lot of strange looks and interesting solicitations but I am undaunted in my endeavor to be the first person in Columbia, SC to own a copy of this soon to be classic.

let's face it,folks...the only way that Prince could get a huge hit single right now,is for him to let Pharrell produce the song and have Jay-Z rap on it.

This song would have done much better had it been released the night of the super bowl (inlucing the marketing campagin it acutally had when it finally was released) along with a video and a couple of followup tv appearances.

anyone who wants to see the song be a decent hit, it's pretty easy. Find whatever stations near you that are playing it already, call them and request sometime during each DJ shift. I count 25 statioons above. Enough requests to get it played just one more time a day on each station would add 175 spins in a week. That may be enough momentum to get it added to a few more stations.

Reqesting it on the stations already playing it will have better results than requesting it on stations

Maybe works in the US...

When I first checked there they didn't have the single's image on there. Now they do, not sure if that's their doing or Prince's camp.

Change it one more time..
