I wasn't crazy over this song, but thought it was at least a hit. But since I am in my 40s I really have no idea what makes a hit now and really don't care. I just am hoping for an album that doesn't contain poppy stuff like this. 3rd eye girl stuff is at least more interesting.

It has almost 850 000 plays on Spotify at the moment. 4 times as many plays as Pretzlbodylogic. Not that bad considering songs like 1999 has been on Spotify for several years now, and has only a bit more than 2 million plays. This proves that Prince is not very relevant these days. In comparison Bruno Mars with his hit Locked Out Of Heaven has 111 000 000 plays. It's about time Prince release remasters of his classic records with bonus tracks and heavy promo. Hopefully people won't forget him.

That's a pretty unfair comparison to make, though.

"Locked Out Of Heaven" is Bruno's biggest ever hit. It's been out for what, two years? It's peak period happened at a time when streaming sites such as Spotify went through a huge growth spike (which has since slowed).

There are plenty of contemporary artists who would love to have 850k plays on one streaming service for a song that was released less than 2 months ago, and doesn't have a music video.

Not sure what proves he's not very relevant - 850K listens to Fallinlove2nite or 2 million listens to 1999? Either way I don't think it proves he's not very relevant. To me it suggests he's got an older/ more traditional fanbase who don't necessarily rely on Spotify. Convenience aside, why listen to an inferior quality audio stream when you own the track on vinyl or CD?

Prince may or may not be very relevant these days - whatever that means - but Spotify alone doesn't prove it biggrin

Maybe I am just too old to get it but I am so confused with all of these charts. First it looks like the song is not going anywhere but then it makes a debut on the RnB Adult Charts!!! What does it all really mean?

Take all these crazy charts and the recent Billboard Lady Gaga mess and you wonder how doe the music industry really gage what is selling. What kind of industry does not have accurate sales measurements.

How ignorant are you that would mention Prince and Jay-Z in the same sentence. As far as Pharrell he needs to pay Prince for a "Slave For You" rip off first and maybe contact Raphal Siddiq to credit him for ripping off the retro song of "Happy"

Prince will rebound like he always does after all some orgers foolishly belived that D'Angelo would take P's place and we see how that went.

In my opinion the song is not a big hit to this date, but still gets a lot of
Airplay...worldwide more than any other Prince song since many years...
It entered the japanese hot 100 and will surely introduce some new fans to his music...
The older fans are more album buyers...
Maybe a video would have helped and to release it after the super bowl...
But the song is at least a minor success...

Pharrell talks about how "happy" became a hit in this interview. If it wasn't for the video it wouldn't have blown up the way it did.

a good video would probably help this song on the charts... but i'm not sure how far it would go

I see funkenberry referring to whether a video is made and that it would need to be before May 16th which was when the video for When Doves Cry was released so dunno if that suggests either P or Warners will be doing something around then. Probably a bit late for a video for Fallinlove, but what do I know, he released Pretzel on the night Fallin was on New Girl!

As for stuff around the Purple Rain anniversary if after the 16th May is being left free by P or Warners does that indicate PlectrumElectrum and a new single should be out before then? Or might P put it up against any Warners promotion as they're raising awareness for him then without him doing owt?

Comin str8 outta Preston...

rolleyes Left to his own devices,Prince won't have a major hit single these days. When PE is finally released, you will see what I'm talking about. You can diss Pharrell all you want, but his songs become HITS."Happy" is already one of the biggest songs of this year, the same way that "Blurred Lines" and "Get Lucky" dominated last year's charts.I don't know why you're getting uptight. Is it really that important for Prince to have a hit record in 2014,anyway?

The problem is, what if all of those who bought the single actually bought it the same week? Then it would actually have climbed all the way to top 10 atleast. When people are slowly recognising that it actually exists, one at the time will buy the song. And even though it sells an acceptable amount of copies, it's going too slow, and would have sold alot more if he reached the top 20 or top 10 with a video. When you are closer to the top, people will suddenly think OMG HE IS THE SHIT! People are like sheep, and will often buy stuff only if it's already huge. And who can blame them? It's not possible for us to know about every single song on the planet. It needs some buzz for us to be able to find it. Especially in these times where music is EVERYWHERE.

Well it is to have hits when you are using the music of other artist all of the time. You are one that is always on this board wishing for P's failure as if your life depended on it.

since when are videos even remotely relevant anymore? its not too hard to listen to bruno mars or pharrell and not know why these are real hits and fallinlove is not .. there is a huge quality gap between what is big these days and what prince farts frequently in our direction .. i hate pop music and would not bother with bruno or pharrell in a million years .. but i can see why it is a hit .. has nothing to do with music videos that is for sure

That song is a hit because the stars collided for Pharrell. It is his time now. Its also a hit because radio picked it up FINALLY! Because they wouldn't touch it for months, Its been out since last summer. I will admit I knew it was going to be a hit when I first heard it.

In the era of YouTube I don't think you can underestimate the importance of a video...interesting article in this month's UK edition of Esquire on the rise of EDM (note to world - please stop calling it EDM, you all sound silly lol ) in the US which touches on the role of YouTube and social media in allowing acts to circumvent the restrictions of US radio.

Since the commercial comback of 2004, if airplay for Prince at this stage is going to happen, it will be mostly on this chart - since it represents the traditional R&B audience more than the other charts. Personally, I have my doubts about how successful this song will be, although I like it. With that said, however, this is a solid debut for this chart. I've already heard it on the radio a couple of times too.
