20T3N TWO YEARS AFTER - LET'S REMEMBER AND RATE THE SONGS ONE BY ONE

two years since the last Prince album; what seemed like the first album of a new & promising decade was, in fact, the ending of the "comeback" era...will Prince ever release a new album? who knows? with all the online piracy thing, and Prince's notoriously volatile mind, perhaps we won't see a new album until 2015... why not? 5 years in the wilderness, the "lost years" era? lol we'll see..

so folks, let's remember, celebrate and rate the (so far) LAST PRINCE ALBUM...20TEN

1.Compassion= 4/5. starstarstarstar Strong beginning (a bit repetitive though), it's no Musicology or 3121 but it gets the job done . One of his better post-90s chorus...catchy and positive

2.Beginning Endlessly = 5/5 starstarstarstarstar NEO-CLASSIC. PITCH-PERFECT. NUFF SAID, if this had been released in 1985 it would be considered a classic

3.Future Soul Song = 5/5 starstarstarstarstar a song that supposedly dates from the late-90s, it's one of the best songs he has ever written; of course, at this point of his career, only the fans can appreciate songs like this one...

4.Sticky Like Glue = 4/5 starstarstarstar commercial and a bit predictable, but still one of his best post-90s jams, the rap part ruins the 5/5 rating though confused

5.Act of God = 5/5 starstarstarstarstar excellent dance/rock/80s hybrid, the synths and the bass shine through the whole song...

6.Lavaux = 4/5 starstarstarstar a pure 80s throwback, it works as a piece of nostalgia and as an example of "80s revival jam" (the Killers should listen to this and learn something)...

7. Walk in Sand = 4/5 starstarstarstar solid lil ballad; cuz I live next to the sea, this song was an instant classic for me cool

8.Sea of Everything = 3/5 starstarstar competent, but a bit flaccid, like many of his post-TMBGITW ballads...but not embarrassing (which I guess counts for something)

9.Everybody Loves Me = 2/5 starstar the turd of the album (this is a PRINCE album, after all), repetitive and beyond silly...it would be tolerable as a B-Side or as a "vault" track, but here it totally ruins the flow of the album,

(*10.Laydown = 3/5 starstarstar ) I liked it back in the day, now I'm not mad about it. Very commercial and late-00s-ish, but it works (somehow), not bad for a "hidden track", this def works better than ELM as the album closer song...the Purple Yoda line is both great and awful...

TOTAL = 3'9/50 = nearly a solid starstarstarstar

1.Compassion=0/5

2.Beginning Endlessly =0/5

3.Future Soul Song = 0/5

4.Sticky Like Glue = 0/5

5.Act of God = 1/5

6.Lavaux = 2.5/5

7. Walk in Sand = 0/5

8.Sea of Everything = 0/5

9.Everybody Loves Me = 0/5

Total 0.75/5 (that's pretty generous)

This album deserves nothing but a slap in the face. Prince at his least inspired and most self indulgent. Lyrics are crap, instrumentation sounds like he did it on a casio. Would have thrown out the CD if I didn't need it from a completest standpoint. The most embarrassing album Prince has ever produced.

This CD with MPLS Sound are my two least favorite Prince CDs. I'm not certain on how to rate it yet.

Lyrics are ok to just plain bad.

99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

It was okay. The first half was alot better than the last half. it is an okay album at best in a whole. The 3 funk punch of Sticky Like Glue, Act Of God and Laaux are outstanding. Hsould have kept going and not made it so akward in the end as Sea Of Everything, ELM and Laydown do not go together equally. They dont flow, thus the albums conclusion does not add up. I'd replace Sea Of Everything and Everybody Loves Me with Turn Me Loose or even the remake of Xtraloveable..both hell. Laydown works as a bonus track. Sounds good live and sounds good turned up at a Prince party.

The album didnt really have a theme or a story...not so much like a collection of songs like 3121 but the albums overall recording sound worked.

listened to the album once and cant remember any of it except sticky like glue, which I would have to give a 8 or 9/10

that laydown song wasn't too bad but the lyrics were too cheesy for me

Compassion = 4/5 (It's a KILLER track! I think it's one of the best openings on an album! All of the instruments come together so very well! It's tight and makes me feel better, feel good, and feel wonderful!...EXCUSE THE PUN! LOL..But this song makes me feel Happy! The Lyrics are also very good, IMO. " Love 4 greater number, freezes over and cool, everyone around u, acts like a bloody fool, no sanctity 2 the left of u, no righteouness 2 the right, the only thing that's left in fashion..COMPASSION"

Beginning Endlessly = 5/5 (This song is essentially the song that made me a Prince fan. When I started researching Prince in depth; this was the song that intiated the response of fascination of him. Starting with the heavy synths, and chicken greese guitar..it's a INSTANT CLASSIC.

Future Soul Song = 5/5 (One of the best spiritual songs, and trippy songs he ever recorded. I think this calls out what Prince is about. He must of recorded it right when I woke up after this 'Dream')

Sticky Like Glue = 4.5/5 (Just funky and one of the best screams at the beginning. LOL. The rap is what brings this song just a bit down...lol. But it's short, and you learn to forget it ever existed after a while. I love how all of the vocals come together towards the end, it's just groovy! One of the best on the record)

Act Of God = 5/5 (YES...at first it was a NO, cause I did not like it for some reason, but now it has grown into a buster..I wish there was an extended version!

Lavaux = 5/5 One that has become my favorites from this album! It's my most played..I love the 'Automatic' feel it brings from 'The Pointer Sisters'. It gurantees the funk and the flow!!

Walk In Sand = 5/5 Another song that Never disappoints me. I love this ballad, it goes beautiful places, and never ceases to bring the soul! When I first heard this, it was another song I kept going back to me.

Sea Of Everything = 2/5 Meh...TOO boring, but not yet a throwaway...It just sounds too simple. He sounds asif he did this in one take...AND maybe he needed a couple of more to make it sounds more fresh and crisp. I rarely may hear some of the lines repeat in my head, but for the most part I don't play this. It is my Least played song here...

Everybody Loves Me = 2.5/5 Well..This is not as bad as it once was, because for some reason..I got the '1999' vibe to it. I still don't play it much, cause it often irks me because it sounds reminscent to a circus sometimes..lol. It shuld have stayed in the vault..But of course Prince had to make some type of HAPPY Jam...LOL. I just wished he kept it for hmself and not on the inclusion of 20Ten. lol

Laydown = 4/5 I dig it, but it lacks something for some reason. It reminds me of 'Guitar'..AND by that I mean; I LOVE IT live, but on CD it does not accomplish what it does Live. It sounds off and a bit too much...But when he went to LOPEZ..He brought it down! I still remembering seeing him lay it down live! smile

Overall I have a special place for this album, because it started a journey into Prince that is forever now...I give it a 4.5./5

It's Button Therapy, Baby!

EyeJester7,

Excellent review. I would encourage you to revisit the last three songs and think about Al Green, Sly Stone and George Clinton, in succession, but warped into Prince's inimitable Minneapolis style, and I think you might just conclude that 20Ten is a brilliant showcase of a Prince album.

love,

Spirit

Compassion ~ 6/10 ~ Highschool Musical-like, but good message and end musical break.

Beginning Endlessly ~ 9/10 ~ A futuristic 80's track....if that's possible. Lots of creativity and an immense funk breakdown.

Future Soul Song ~ 8/10 ~ An 80's esq soul ballad. Simple, but effective. Does become slightly skippable over time, but i immensely enjoy his lower register here. Especially the harmony.

Sticky Like Glue ~ 9/10 ~ Right up there with the best of 'em. The best of the retro sounding tracks, a total gem of a track that so-called hardcores would lose their minds over if presented as a boot.

Act Of God ~ 7/10 ~ Nice retro funk number, nice lyrics and great funk break. Just a bit too much by-the-numbers.

Lavaux ~ 6/10 ~ It's totally AUTOmatic whenever Prince replicates. Too retro for me, but contains some good chicken scratchings on that guitar!

Walk In Sand ~ 6/10 ~ A completely by-the-numbers pop ballad. Not bad, not good.

Sea Of Everything ~ 8/10 ~ A much better ballad. Higher register allows one to marvel at his vocal versatility when compared to Future Soul Song.

Everybody Loves Me ~ 5/10 ~ Goofy. A poor mans No More Candy 4 U. Good new wave beat, though. The good this track does is showcase his unmatched versatility.

LayDown ~ 8/10 ~ Ah! The dirty new sound i crave. Real funky and hip. Only it's too short.

20ten sounded like a step back for me. I don't want no retro sounding tracks, as good as they are. I want that dirty new sound or a mad experimental, innovative piece. Something artistically challenging. 20ten was incredibly by-the-numbers, as fantastic as those numbers can be.

Still, i just marvel at the fact that the man who made, say, Arboretum....also made Everybody Loves Me. Like or dislike either, but THAT IS UNBELIEVABLE.

Haven't pulled this out in over a year - and man! With fresh ears it sounds great again. The rap in "Sticky Like Glue" is still awful, but Prince-awful... where you kinda want to pat his head and go "awww, you try so hard to sound like a normal person".

Anywho...always loved the first 4 songs... "Lavaux" sounds way better than I remember. I still have yet to ge tthrough "Sea of Everything" without skipping. A great CD - if this came out in 85, we'd all be drooling over it.

only on the org can a song be described as a "terd" and still get a 2 out of 5 star rating

ima reverse the logic and remove 2 stars from all the other ratings .. which puts the review by the op at a solid 3 for the overall cd ..

then i'm gonna compare twenty10 to what i consider a true 3 star record to be .. batman ..

batman slays this record .. the future .. lemon crush .. the unstopable scandelous .. electric chair .. and some ok .. trust .. party man .. vicki waiting is poorly mixed but is a great song .. and a couple clunkers .. batdance and orion

so .. i think i will just listen to batman instead .. its way better AND it doesn't suck half as bad as prince tripping over syllables while rapping .. or singing douche comercials .. or singing a song about a song that is so far in the future it doesnt even have a name yet .. huh? .. makes me wanna say .. prince .. FINISH THE SONG .. what if lets go crazy had prince singing "this is the lets go crazy song" instead of the chorus ?

oh wait .. i guess the purple bananas line wasn't that much better .. fuck it .. 2010 is his best record yet ..

I'll say the same as thiks really except I still really like Laydown and I think Everybody loves me is so bad, that it's good. I had just come back from Europe after seeing him play at Roskilde and felt a bit of post travelling blues. So after having about fifteen copies of the Mirror bought for me whilst away, I finally cracked it on and was incredibly surprised how much I liked it. It was the first consistent Prince album I had enjoyed since 3121 and still feel the same.

I can understand easily that it's a marmite album, a bit like rainbow children, which again I absolutely love

1. Compassion=4/10 - lots of Prince tropes, has that 'Can't Stop This Feeling I Got' feel to it. I quite like the "whatever skin your in...." part, works for me - it's all jazz hands and amateur revue night. Goofy, but vacuous, fun. Those lyrics though, "so much better than nothing", fucking really?! lol

2. Beginning Endlessly =2/10 - NPS called, it wants it's out-take back.

3. Future Soul Song = 3/10 - It's OK, but Prince poops about ballads just because he thinks he needs a couple of them for an album, rarely do they add anything fresh or interesting to the Prince songbook. That melody seems really mainstream and not Princely at all.

4. Sticky Like Glue = 6/10 - The album's obvious standout, simple and fun, like all the tracks here though, it goes absolutely nowhere at all.

5. Act of God = 1/10 - Not interested, right from the first couple of notes I've heard everything I need to *skip*

6. Lavaux = 4/10 - Nice safe hook, but nothing else going on.

7. Walk in Sand = 6/10 - Nice sweet simple, best slow effort here IMO

8. Sea of Everything = ?/10 - Err, what? I should listen to the album again, I have no recollection of what this sounds like

9. Everybody Loves Me = 1/10 - No they don't

10. Laydown = 0/10 - Putitdown, like a blind old dog with arthritis.

Overall - 2/10. There's very little going on here, almost a complete lack of twists and turns. I like projects with a mission statement, otherwise it's just a dozen songs for the sake of it - seems like the latter is what we got. I have never had any interest in seeing Prince use the sounds he used in the mid-80s, and the evidence why is right on this record.

To it's credit, this album is better than MPLSound, but then so is sitting on an angry porcupine.

I really like it, except for Sea Of Everything, which is possibly the worst track Prince has ever released. A 7/10 for me.

I did a version with Hot Summer and Cause & effect because I love those two tracks. Hot Summer replaces Sea Of Spew and Cause & effect goes on the end. I also moved Laydown to the beginning. This makes it an 8/10 for me now and I play it often.

I gave it 2 stars because a) the song is catchy and b) as I said, the song would be tolerable as a "vault" track (Good Love, Teacher Teacher or Neon Telephone are equally irritiating, but at least he was smart enough to not include them on any album...)

for me, 0/5 Prince songs are Freaks on This Side, Hot With U or Life O the Party...

As much as I like this album, it is difficult for me to rate it as is because I have included “Cause and Effect” and “Hot Summer” in my playlist, so here’s my rating.

*

“Cause and Effect” 8.5

“Compassion” 8

“Beginning Endlessly: 8.5

“Future Soul Song: 9.5

“Sticky Like Glue: 9 (I would have given this a 10, but the rap is terrible; however, the rest of the song is so amazing)

“Act of God”: 9

“Lavaux”: 8.5

“Walk in Sand”: 7.5

“Sea of Everything: 7.5

“Everybody Loves Me”: 7

“Hot Summer”: 7

“Laydown”: 10 (And I don’t even like rap, but this song kicks butt because the guitar is fierce!)

*

I also have the newest version of “Extraloveable” (9) and “Rich Friends” (8) in this playlist, but I will not factor their scores into my rating of 20Ten.

*

So, my overall rating of 20Ten is 8.3/10, a solid (B) rating. Without “Cause and Effect” and “Hot Summer” my rating actually increases to 8.45, but I so love “Cause and Effect” that I can’t listen to 20Ten without it, especially since it was one of the songs that Prince was taking to radio stations in preparation for the release of 20Ten. It has continued to baffle me why he did not include “Cause and Effect” and “Hot Summer” on 20Ten. And I know that some smart mouth is going to say “because they suck,” but if that’s the case the rest of the album probably sucks to that person also so that response doesn’t hold water or answer the question.

8.Sea of Everything = 0/5

9.Everybody Loves Me = 0/5

10. Laydown = 4/5

This was a stinker of an album to me. Such a shame as Lotusflower was one of my favorites and then he followed it up with this. I would have rather Lotus be his last album instead of this one so at least he would have finished his career with a strong release instead of a half rate cd that he couldnt even get a distributor for in the USA. Its a sad ending for a once great artist!!
