Compassion = 4/5 (It's a KILLER track! I think it's one of the best openings on an album! All of the instruments come together so very well! It's tight and makes me feel better, feel good, and feel wonderful!...EXCUSE THE PUN! LOL..But this song makes me feel Happy! The Lyrics are also very good, IMO. " Love 4 greater number, freezes over and cool, everyone around u, acts like a bloody fool, no sanctity 2 the left of u, no righteouness 2 the right, the only thing that's left in fashion..COMPASSION"

Beginning Endlessly = 5/5 (This song is essentially the song that made me a Prince fan. When I started researching Prince in depth; this was the song that intiated the response of fascination of him. Starting with the heavy synths, and chicken greese guitar..it's a INSTANT CLASSIC.

Future Soul Song = 5/5 (One of the best spiritual songs, and trippy songs he ever recorded. I think this calls out what Prince is about. He must of recorded it right when I woke up after this 'Dream')

Sticky Like Glue = 4.5/5 (Just funky and one of the best screams at the beginning. LOL. The rap is what brings this song just a bit down...lol. But it's short, and you learn to forget it ever existed after a while. I love how all of the vocals come together towards the end, it's just groovy! One of the best on the record)

Act Of God = 5/5 (YES...at first it was a NO, cause I did not like it for some reason, but now it has grown into a buster..I wish there was an extended version!

Lavaux = 5/5 One that has become my favorites from this album! It's my most played..I love the 'Automatic' feel it brings from 'The Pointer Sisters'. It gurantees the funk and the flow!!

Walk In Sand = 5/5 Another song that Never disappoints me. I love this ballad, it goes beautiful places, and never ceases to bring the soul! When I first heard this, it was another song I kept going back to me.

Sea Of Everything = 2/5 Meh...TOO boring, but not yet a throwaway...It just sounds too simple. He sounds asif he did this in one take...AND maybe he needed a couple of more to make it sounds more fresh and crisp. I rarely may hear some of the lines repeat in my head, but for the most part I don't play this. It is my Least played song here...

Everybody Loves Me = 2.5/5 Well..This is not as bad as it once was, because for some reason..I got the '1999' vibe to it. I still don't play it much, cause it often irks me because it sounds reminscent to a circus sometimes..lol. It shuld have stayed in the vault..But of course Prince had to make some type of HAPPY Jam...LOL. I just wished he kept it for hmself and not on the inclusion of 20Ten. lol

Laydown = 4/5 I dig it, but it lacks something for some reason. It reminds me of 'Guitar'..AND by that I mean; I LOVE IT live, but on CD it does not accomplish what it does Live. It sounds off and a bit too much...But when he went to LOPEZ..He brought it down! I still remembering seeing him lay it down live! smile

Overall I have a special place for this album, because it started a journey into Prince that is forever now...I give it a 4.5./5

Digging your post as always.

Haven't heard them, but my sense is, if even YOU don't play "Sea of Everything" and wish "Everybody Loves Me" had stayed in the vault, then those songs must be horrible. No wonder no one's put them up on YT.

For Prince standards, the album is pretty weak.

There is no soul in it, no emotion.

I don't like the vocals, the album is boring and it feels like everything sounds the same.

Lavaux, Beginning Endlessly and Sticky Like Clue are okay, although the last one has one of the worst raps ever recorded. Even Tony did a better job!

The drumsounds are cheap, a bit like the Batman album, although that one was 10 times more exciting than this one.

Prince shpuldn't release everything he wants.

EyeJester7,

Excellent review. I would encourage you to revisit the last three songs and think about Al Green, Sly Stone and George Clinton, in succession, but warped into Prince's inimitable Minneapolis style, and I think you might just conclude that 20Ten is a brilliant showcase of a Prince album.

love,

Spirit

Thanks a lot for the suggestion Spirit! smile

I believe they may bring a respect for the last three! The last three kind of goes downhill, it's not horrible..But it just lacks what was brought for in the beginning. I like someone wish he added 'Cause & Effect in exchange for 'Everybody Loves Me'. I also do really like the way Walk In Sand falls into Sea Of Everything. smile

It is brillant, and I honestly prefer this over 'Planet Earth'. BUT only by a few points! lol smile

Total 0.75/5 (that's pretty generous)

This album deserves nothing but a slap in the face. Prince at his least inspired and most self indulgent. Lyrics are crap, instrumentation sounds like he did it on a casio. Would have thrown out the CD if I didn't need it from a completest standpoint. The most embarrassing album Prince has ever produced.

Too funny, mostly accurate. Here's my take

1.Compassion=1/5

2.Beginning Endlessly =2/5

3.Future Soul Song = 3/5

4.Sticky Like Glue = 3/5

5.Act of God = 1/5

6.Lavaux = 2/5

9.Everybody Loves Me = 0/5

10. Laydown = 4/5

Total 1/5 (my least favorite Prince album)

1. Compassion= 3.5/5 Fun and feelgood track, nice chorus. Feels a little unfinished in the production department (drums especially), but nice track nevertheless.

2. Beginning Endlessly = 3.5/5 This track is somewhat plodding on at parts, but I still like it. Very Princey track, lovely rhythm guitar in the second half of the song.

3. Future Soul Song = 4/5 Beautiful song, although not adding much new to Prince's array of ballads.

4. Sticky Like Glue = 4.5/5 Now we are really getting the album started, such a fun(ky) track. More of this please!

5. Act of God = 4.5/5 Another belter, really liking this one!

6. Lavaux = 4.5/5 Remeniscent of the Pointer Sisters "Automatic", but still a good track in its' own right.

7. Walk in Sand = 2.5/5 Nicely recorded track, but a somewhat boring ballad. I don't always skip it though.

8. Sea of Everything = 2/5 Another somewhat bland ballad. Probably the worst track of the album.

9. Everybody Loves Me = 3.5/5 Lots of people hate it, but I really like the sound of this track. I know it is a bit childish/musical-like, but it always makes me happy and I like singing along to the chorus while driving in my car.

10. Laydown = 2.5/5 Some interesting musical ideas here, but I don't like the rap/lyrics. Luckily it is short and over before you know it.

All n all this adds ups to an objective mark of 3.5/5 for this album. But because I like 20Ten much better than most of his post-2000 output I give it a 4 out of 5.

If he had a good engineer/producer onboard that could have made the overall sound of the album a bit "bigger"/ harder hitting, and dropped one (or both!) of the last two ballads in favor of uptempo material, then it could have been one of the best Prince albums ever. Shame, but I still think it is a very pleasant listen.

Overall I do not like it, its a huge fall off from Lotusflow3r and his worst since NEWS and the late 90s.

1 Compassion 7 Upbeat dancable opener
2 Beginning endlessly 8 Got slamming beat and assured pop rock joint
3 Future Soul song 8 Catchy and convincing ballad
4 Sticky like glue 7 As above but less convincing
5 Act of God 3 Boring moralistic tone in the song, typical silly preaching
6 Lavaux 8 Not bad catchy high tempo song, better jam in a dreadful album
7 Walk in sand 2 Boring smoochy ballad that goes nowhere
8 Sea of Everything 3 Prince can write this drivel in his sleep, very I don't give a fuck about songwriting
9 Everybody loves me 2 Hideously bad sing song jam, complete with unfunky Bontempi beat - aaarghhh
10 Laydown 8 Not bad jam, but very underwhelming in parts, funny line about Purple Yoda

Overall I gave it 54/100, I don't know why there is so much love for it, its garbage

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I really like this album. It does have a feeling of a side project, not fully realised, but it's one album I love listening to all the way though.

1.Compassion=3.5/5 - Nice opening, but it feels like a 'Let's Go Crazy lite' track.

2.Beginning Endlessly =4.5/5 - I love this one. The synths, the funky guitar near the end, it's all good.

3.Future Soul Song = 5/5 - The best song on the album imho. Such a beautiful ballad, that should be getting airplay. I can't understand why so many dislike it?

4.Sticky Like Glue = 4/5 - A cool funky track.

5.Act of God = 3.5/5 - One of the songs that's grown on me. Nice track, if unspectacular.

6.Lavaux = 5/5 - The one song that actually feels like a true lost 80's track. Brilliant synths, brilliant guitar, great lyrics. My only criticism is that it's not long enough.

7. Walk in Sand = 3/5 - Predictable love song, but a pleasant addition.

8.Sea of Everything = 3/5 - A sweet ballad, that would have been the perfect album close. Unfortunately Prince felt like adding....

9.Everybody Loves Me = 2/5 - The stinker on the album. I didn't give it 1/5 because I personally like the deliberate tongue in cheek throwaway attitude of the song. But as an album track, no!

10. Laydown = 4/5 - Dark and funky. Prince's rapping rarely works, but it seems to work here. The lycric 'Here comes the purple yoda' is classic.

Here we go then

Compassion 8 outta 10 -Let's do the purple Time Warp, a load of rollocking bollocky loveliness

Beginning Endlessly - 10 outta 10 It's the dogs cock (in a good way)

Future Soul Song - 9 outta 10 Favourite ballad in ages. Even squirtier live.

Sticky Like Glue - 7 outta 10 S'alright, quite funky. Much much squirtier live.

Act of God - 3 outta 10 Still don't get what everyone's on about. A bit like Kim Kardashians ass. Big, but very very boring.

6. Lavaux - 9 outta 10 Pointersisterstastic, like 80's porn - more hairspray and production than necessary, but I LOVE that!

7. Walk in Sand - 7 outta 10 s'alright, nice and breezy

8. Sea of Everything - 2 outta 10 No thanks, it's bollocks

9. Everybody Loves Me - 6 outta 10 - Well I do, but others might think you're a twat

10. Laydown - 1 outta 10 - Love the depeche mode industrial effect, but then it's mainly shit. Lyrics make me vomit through my eyes. Load of cock.

Love the first half. Change Laydown for Turn me Loose and it's a 8/10

yes, well that's a lot of ifs. as it is, it's pretty average and uninspiring. and I'm sure if he combined it with half of MPLSound, it'd be the 2 halves that I hate, knowing Prince.

agree. never got what people like about this, and I see people mention how much they love it with some regularity when it comes up.

reminds me of one of those songs a fading disco diva from the '70s would have done in the mid-'80s and no one would have paid attention.

the whole vibe of this song sounds like something he should have given to Shelbey to sing and once it was finished, locked it up in the vault.

it's not bad. it's just... nothing.

Tremolina

I wouldn't call it a bad album, but it certainly is not one of his best either. Kind of strange album I think.

I remember listening to it a couple of times after it came out and that I thought it had some interesting ideas, but also that they were mostly just that: ideas.

For example I liked that he toke some odd directions on Beginning endlessly and Laveaux, but he could have done much more with those songs.

I also liked that he used some of the early 80's lynn sound and funky guitar rifs again, but that sounded a bit forced and silly sometimes too. It didn't have that personality, power and energy it had before (and still has).

Coupled to some not so great sounding singing, lyrics and songwriting on Compassion, Act of God and Everybody loves me for example, it was pretty dissapointing to hear.

But I know Prince albums can grow on you, so I tried listening to it again on youtube but found out that I couldn't, except for covers and remixes by others. Strange again...

I will never understand why some folks rate 20T3N lower than C&D, New Power Soul, The Slaughterhouse/Chocolate Invasion or MPLSound...

1.Compassion=0/5

2.Beginning Endlessly =0/5

3.Future Soul Song = 0/5

4.Sticky Like Glue = 0/5

5.Act of God = 1/5

6.Lavaux = 2.5/5

7. Walk in Sand = 0/5

8.Sea of Everything = 0/5

9.Everybody Loves Me = 0/5

Total 0.75/5 (that's pretty generous)

This album deserves nothing but a slap in the face. Prince at his least inspired and most self indulgent. Lyrics are crap, instrumentation sounds like he did it on a casio. Would have thrown out the CD if I didn't need it from a completest standpoint. The most embarrassing album Prince has ever produced.

yeahthat

Maybe I'd give FutureSoulSong a 1/5 but that's about it. The album is so bad that Prince needs to release a new record just so this record can be forgotten and doesn't permenantly stain his legacy. I remember when The Truth album was out and that had a number of bad but somewhat defensible tracks on it and I thought, 'well this was about as dull and boring as Prince can get', but then came 20T3N and it sounds like Prince is on anti-depressants. It's probably the worst Prince album of all, and when you consider how many bad albums Prince has out there now, that's really saying something. Worst than LotusFlow3r. Worst than Rave. Worst than Emanciplastic. Worst than all the girlfriend/side-piece albums. Worst than the instrumental albums not named Madhouse. Yep, 20T3N is the worst Prince record of all. Though this Andy Allo project is looking like a strong candidate for Prince's Album Hall of Shame.
