It's so funny after reading Hahn's Possessed biography, Come was described as a contract filler to dead the name Prince while simultaneously releasing The Gold Experience as which was full of strong material and contained the hit "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World". Of course Warner Bros never released two Prince albums at the same time, but I do remember being surprised by the backlash from critics in magazines back then. I wonder if Prince knows how much impact the single actually had with listeners. It seemed to be a time too turbulent to enjoy the success.
Where I'm from "Letitgo" was a huge hit on mainstream radio, as big as "7" at least, and I bought the cassingle. I was only 13 so I was in that 'Youth Market' the industry is always going on about...
The songs on the single, "Letitgo" and "Solo" are still my favorite on the album.

Reason #43338577111 why that book sucks ass
I don't think of "Come" as being anywhere near "contract filler" and I think to say that undermines just how awesome the album is.
Look at something like "The Vault : Old Friends For Sale" - now THAT'S contract filler. "Chaos & Disorder", too. But not "Come".
Come had singles - "Letitgo", "Space", remixes (both ones by Prince himself like the Universal Love Mix of Space, and official ones done by others like QD3's remix of Letitgo), dedicated artwork and even it's own book - "The Sacrifice of Victor" photography book. Prince himself was sending out tracks like "Pheromone" to that Dutch radio station. The album went to #1 here in the UK. It went gold in the US. The instrumental to "Pheremone" was used as the theme music for BET's "Video LP" show.
I like it more than The Gold Experience. It's my favorite Prince album of the 90's actually. I know a lot of people here agree with me. |

on that whole Come/TGE mess with WB, you know what I've never understood? Why didn't either side propose a double album? Disc 1 be Come by "Prince," and TGE by that symbol.

I agree. I think the lack of enthusiasm for Come is all relative to how one feels about Gold Experience (ie. the author's opinion, people at WB, orgers)

Warner Brothers did not want to saturate the market with too much Prince music at once.. that was Prince's main issue with the label at the time.

OK I can see their point if two seperate album releases, which is comletely absolutely different from a single released double album.

He wanted each single album to be released simultaneously and the label would not, did not do that. So Come was released first, and then Gold Experience.

"Oh, no, motherfucker. Not today."
Ack! Chaos and Disorder was my first Prince album and it made me a fan. Maybe it was contract filler but it is also the best example of the "rock" side of Prince. Until the release of Lotusflow3r (the single disc) no other studio album came close to having as much rock guitar playing from Prince.
Plus it features the mindblowing talents of both Scrap D and Steppa Ranks!

I'd put them pretty much on the same level.
Come's more interesting, but it's from a period when he came off as just sort of naive with some of his lyrics and experiments with other genres of music. The horn arrangements are amazing, but I'm not so sure about some of the drum sounds there. Musicology sounds a bit stiff throughout, but I like the way how he was able to make it sound like a cohesive album after the jumbled mess that his 1990s period was.
Come sounds a bit dated now too.

"Letitgo" drums sound perfectly contemporary for 1994. That's the "Uphill Peace Of Mind" snare crackin' at the right tempo. DJ Premier using the same drum sound that year:

Come is one my favorite albums as Musicology is my least favorite, but I would never say "you are deaf" to somebody who opposes that. But whatever let him/her say what she/he wants, I guess. It takes a while to "get", but it is a great album.
Exceptfor Orgasm, that was just shite. And I actually liked it when it was on Controversy.

That is a quality about Musicology I really appreciate. Some of his albums later in his caress sound like compilations rather than albums. They lacked a sonic cohesiveness. I hate it when he dose that cuz I know he has it in him to develop a theme and see it through, and when he doesn't he's cheating his fans. Rave:compilation, Choco/slaughter: compilations, 3121:compilation, Planet Earth:compilation, 20Ten: compilation. Just as recent as Lotusflow3r he released a full fledged creation with themes, both sonically and lyricaly. If one enjoys it or not is up to the individual, but by no means is it a Rave.

The bootleggers actually made the 90s a jumbled mess. The material for Come, Gold, and Exodus were recorded at different times throughout the early 90s. For the most part Come early 93, Gold late 93, and Exodus late 94/early 95. Perfect example, the 10,000 bootleg is a jumbled mess as far as putting tracks together that don't belong together. This would be respectable if it came from someone other than you. You've shown little to no qualms about forcing your own opinions down people's throats and using eccentric language to prove your... "points."

I prefer it the other way around: Come>Musicology I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Prince didn't put together those bootleg releases, so I don't really understand this comment. Why should the bootleg releases have any impact on how cohesive we consider the official releases to be?

Come is a great album got some really good songs on it, hate Musicology with a passion in my opinion its the worst Prince album of all time its the only Prince album i can never listen to anymore
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I took your comment as to the 90s being a jumbled mess to be about the sheer number of songs recorded in the early 90s and where they belonged. There are plenty of people on here who think that Prince just picked and chose which songs were to be on which albums, which isn't the case. My bad! TRUE BLUE
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Maybe, but the people who put out the 10,000 release did not decide what tracks were to be included. They put out the tracks as what was included on the 10,000 wallpaper video tape.

Huh? Those songs were all recorded around the same time. All of Prince's albums have spanned a year or two within their own "era" and sometimes longer.
None of what is on the 10k boot was done past 94.

What the eff was wrong with Prince?
i sat there like ----> for that entire Album.
I LOVED the beat to "Pheromone" but those lyrics are creepy! O.o
Don't get me started on "Come"..... The ending was very "interestiiiing"
"Space" was THE BESTEST SONG ON THAT ALBUM (In my opinion) and blaah blahh blah.....
Revisited this album since your post. When this album was released I had just lost my parents so the album went by the wayside. But after revisiting this album in 2012 have to agree it has some of his finest moments. Thanks. [Edited 5/3/12 12:40pm]
