Ever just not wanted to listen Prince?

I can't stand any of his music right now.

Can't turn it on, can't listen to it, nothing.

And it's weird, because I'll have times when I listen to nothing else, just Prince all day ever day. And then I'll drop him like nothing and stop listening. And when I stop listening I just can't turn it on.

I mean, I still like him, but I can't hear it at all right now.

Anyone else ever felt like this?

That's kind of how I listen to all music. It's all or nothing. May be Prince, may be the Beatles, may be Madonna or James Brown or Elton John or Bowie or Stevie or Janet or MJ or Elvis or Rufus Wainwright or anyone.

Doesn't matter who. I listen to it exclusively and almost nothing else, and then I'm done with it for quite awhile.

It's getting more relaxed as I get older. I just don't give enough of a shit about listening to music any more.

But. Yes, I understand. And I do this.

^ I agree with all of that, except the 3rd line.

You get tired of anything eventually, especially if you overplay it. There's certain Prince albums that I still can't listen to because I overplayed them a few years ago..

^Right

Listen to other music for a while. Then come back to Prince, you'll appreciate it again once you get back to it. It's happened to me before. Right now, I'm taking a break from Prince so that I don't overplay his music.

even after doing a marathon dj set at a prince party. there is just so much music of different variety. you try spinning nothing but prince music for 9 or 10 hours non stop

a few years ago when i worked in a record store we had what we called "paul weller syndrome", which is what we called it when we found an album so good that we would play it so many times that we would be sick of hearing it. to put you in the picture, this wasn't a store where we just played the latest releases or what was popular to generate more sales, we used to play what we wanted to hear. our customer base was more students and indie kids and dj's, than grannies and kids, whereas in HMV you were stuck hearing the biggest release all fucking day until it did your fucking head in

but the paul weller syndrome related to a specific record, discovered after repeated plays of wild wood. other albums that fell into that category included dummy by portishead and to bring yo my love by pj harvey (filed under P as that's the bands name, as opposed to the singers name, same with sade)

i'll go through phases of listening to certain things, but not the extent i don't want to listen to them any longer, though when trawling through the catalogue of certain artists like those on ZTT you can get close once you've heard the 42nd 10+ minute remix of two tribes or p machinary, in search of the ultimate mix for a compilation

Of course. It's called being human.

It doesn't just happen with Prince either, or indeed music.

I think everyone has hit it right on the nail, with most of my favorite artists i kind of have periods where i don't listen to em. For example Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles & Diamanda Galas are my all time favorites. But i go sometimes a month or 2 without listening to them. Hell i went through an almost 9 month period where i didn't listen to one Van Halen record or song cause i wore them out as a kid lol

But with VH, Prince, Bob etc. When i get into the mood to listen to em it's like chips or cookies... u have 1... after that another.. and soon i can listen to them all day lol

ATM i'm taking a Prince break to razz

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

All music is shit music and no music is real- gunsnhalen

How strange!!!

I am in exactly that place at the moment. I still think about him all day long but I sometimes just get moody on him.

Think I'll pop off and watch Empty Room live at Montreaux that usually does it!

Love to you'all. xxx

Right now, I'm not fussed if I listen to him or not.

But as soon as any word of new music appears, you can guarantee I'll be back into him again, in preparation.

It's good in a way, because it re-ignites your appetite once more and you start getting right back into it as strong as ever.

And yes, it's the same with all my favourite artists.

Time of year affects it too with some artists.

Enya, Enigma, Loreena McKennitt and a few others always seem to release their music around autumn/early winter time and that's the time I start getting a twitch and want to listen to their stuff.

I got into 10,000 Maniacs around spring-time one year, so the first signs of warmish weather come April/May and I start playing them again.

This happens with Prince, but more with individual albums. The Spring is ATWIAD, Parade, Sign O The Times and Lovesexy among others. Summer is 20Ten and Chaos & Disorder and the Autumn is Diamonds & Pearls and Emancipation.

All linked to their released dates, obviously.

Yes. One of things that I love about his music (like everyone else) is the diversity. There so many different styles to it that you can't get bored. I feel the same way about Me'Shell. But sometimes you do need a break.

Now someone like Miles Davis?... I can listen to him 24-7-365 and still be knocked out by him.

Well at the moment I have been in the shadows of Prince's music and its a very content place to be. I am going to make a video about it. smile Right now I am listening to his instrumental works. What's amazing about his work is that he has so many instrumentals. We have: Madhouse, Xpecation, N.E.W.S.,C-Note, Kamaustra, etc.

These albums along with other songs are very emotional in their delivery. The lyrics are in the sound and production.I can't tell you how much the song 'West,North, & Barcelona' has done for me and their are no words in them. Yet they are emotionally so satisfying. It just answers the question!

So right now I am not too fond of Prince and his songs with text. The only material I have been really listening to from Prince right now along with instrumentals are 'Dance Electric, Mutiny/Ice Cream Castles'! I am listening to a lot of Stevie Wonder, Kate Bush,MJ,9 Inch Nails, Soul, A lot grunge and rock stuff, a lot less hard dirty funky stuff. I've been mesmerized with a lot serene sounds.

When you take a break and comeback you will fall in love with those songs you once adored. smile Sometimes you get surprised how good a song is. But if you overplay something; your mind becomes annoyed at it and you need a break! Unless it's 'Fascination' then you never can get tired of it! And I can't ever get enough of that song!! Lol

I agree with and relate to pretty much everyone here. I will go on a hardcore Prince binge for nothing short of one to two months, and every day I might be in a different mood for another era. Like one morning I wake up with P Control in my head and the next day I will want to listen to nothing but the Parade album all day. Then I will stick like velcrow to U2's War album for three days, then maybe to David Bowie's Low and Heroes albums for two to three weeks. Then all of the sudden I wake up one day returning back to my insatiable craving for Purple Rain or Sign O' the Times or Dirty Mind. Then it's Van Halen's 1984 album, then 5150, and then maybe David Bowie's Black Tie White Noise album, and then...

Well, you get the cycle, hahaha...

There is so much music to discover out there it's ridiculously impossible to stick to one single artist, no matter how talented, how creative, or how vast or strong their musical repretoire is, point blank!

I agree. At the moment Parade sounds like noise to me. boxed But it also depends on the time of year for me too, just like another poster said, or even the weather on a given day. Who knows?! But it happens, with music and other things.

DFUNK

I have to confess to going through a period where I was just over Prince. It pretty much started with me obtaining my own copy of 20Ten, and suddenly getting an immense feeling of disappointment.

I then took a lengthy break from Prince music right up until the upcoming Australian Tour was announced. cool

Well, I haven't listen to Prince in months. I think taking a break from someone's music is always good. Because when you listen to it again, it sounds fresh and amazing all over again.

Until last year I had barely listened to him since 2000.

But that's probably because I overdosed on him in the 90s, and also because I haven't connected with his recent work very much.

Does it really matter though? Why should you care so much if he's an asshole or not? So if he does something good does it make you listen to his music more? Just curious..

smile I think by the sound of it you OD on prince an then need a break

I think thats kinda how most people are who are hardcore fans of people

next time he puts a new album out or does some new work .. it will wake up the passion again

bruce springsteen put out a new album Wrecking Ball an that got me into him again an made me pull out the old albums ... when nothing new is happening .. aka like with PRINCE at the moment .. theres nothing new to hear .. you can replay songs u heard alot .. but u need a break from them .. for them to sound fresh an exciting again

whenever i want to hear some new music ...i make some - prince '99'
