Columbia Pictures created The Monkees, and Rhino owns their rights now, but they are allowed to use the name. En Vogue, NKOTB, and many other groups were put together by someone else but they are still allowed to use their names, and didn't have to change them. It's not like The Time are an imposter Doo Wop or vocal group. The J5 had to change their name (that Motown registered as a trademark, but they were called "Jackson 5" before signing to Motown), but at least in their case they still used a similar name (The Jacksons), and so did Funkadelic & Parliament (P-Funk). That made them easy to find by their listeners. The Moments were in a similar situation to the J5, so they just used their own names "Ray, Goodman, & Brown". Your screen name is MickyDolenz and you seem to know a lot about the The Monkeys, are you just a huge fan of theirs or is there more to it than that?

Nah, not exactly, for reasons Serena explained already AND the folks in The Time always knew that The Time was PRINCES THING and always would be. They started out like that. "Climb in my fur."

Yeah, I like 1960's music. I wasn't really aware of The Monkees until MTV started re-running their show and then a local channel started showing it. I heard a couple of their songs beforehand, but I didn't know they had a TV show or even what they looked like, they just a group I heard on the oldies station. Ugh, I'm so old I used to have a poster of Peter Tork over my bed when I was little. I liked Davey too, but remember feeling sorry for Peter because everyone loved Davey so much. I LOVED them and the show.
Heck, I even remember Mickey in the Circus Boy movie!

Does this apply to all manufactured bands, or just ones started by Prince?
I mean are the 'Spice Girls' their original producers and industry people who set up the original idea, or are they the 5 members that front the group?
We all know it's a legal issue, and who wrote what - but these people are together making music as a unit, the same unit - Prince isn't using those names, evidently has no intention to use those names - and people are saying these bands aren't so without Prince, well if Prince were to use the band name 'The Time' with a completely new lineup, well I say that's not The Time because it hasn't got Morris et all.
Technically it is a legal issue, but that legal issue goes away in the blink of an eye when people aren't being spiteful dicks.

Prince should give away all his rights to stuff he's done for others just to satisfy you haters.
The Spice Girls?!?!

A "New Monkees" group and TV show was created in the mid-80's, but it flopped. I think the show only lasted 3 or 4 episodes. It wasn't any good.

Seriously wtf! 15000 mf's have looked at this thread-such bad press for Prince. I mean what can this prove? So sad! I don't like the name change or the cover, but I wish The Time well.

It was an analogy you halfwit. I thought it would a common enough reference not to go over anyone's head, obviously I was wrong.

The Spice Girls?!?!
grrrr.... And there it is. Please can people stop with this 'haters' bullshit. People can have different views without hating others. It's a moronic term & negates any attempt at civilised discussion. [Edited 9/18/11 9:20am] blah blah blah

You use the Spice Girls as an analogy and I'm the halfwit?
Which one did you pretend you were?
| |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Well, I think that may be the first time I've ever used it because I dislike it also, but it does cover those who hate on everything Prince does. Just like some call others Prince asskissers, drink the purple koolaid, etc..

Actually, yeah, you're the halfwit. The Spice Girls were a manufactured group. As was The Time, as was Vanity 6, as was The Family. As were many other groups listed in this thread.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Whatever. I just thought it was funny to bring up such a crap group to use for the analogy.

How and why would them going by 'The Time' have anything to do with the "ownership of existing material"? Don't believe this. Hey loudmouth, shut the fuck up, right?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
It's all part of one negotiation. They want to use the name for future endeavors. Prince wants to own all the existing material. So, he's saying, give me what I want and I'll give you what you want. If my teenage kid wants to borrow the car tonight and I want him to mow the lawn this afternoon, we might work out a deal even though there is no connection between the lawn and the car. I see Princes point withholding use of "the Time" but this also shows how much of an ass he (Prince) is. Morris Day is a childhood friend. Prince could easily "lease" the use of the Time name for live performances. As well as a one time use for the release of this new cd.

I am very pleased that this topic has recieved as much attention as it has. I've never seen a topic on the org that has died off several times and then mysteriously returns a week or two later to the front page! Thanx. Fellow Orgers.
