Unfortunately, an orger did mention that Prince needs to shut up and not sing politically-related songs, as that orger felt that because Prince is friends with Cornel West, Tavis Smiley, Dick Gregory, that by singing these types songs, he is trying to make up for his supposed lost connection with the black community/black fans during the 80s, which I found that type of statement to be a bit ridiculous,. It seems Prince always wrote/sang songs that touched on either socio-economic, political or race-related issues, throughout his career- "Family Name", "Mr. Man", "Avalanche", "Dreamer", "Ronnie Talks to Russia(?), just to name a few. I do think some fans were "jaded" by that or choose to not readily accept ome of those songs, because they touch on sensitive issues, they may not be able to accept from a man who successfully crossed racial lines with his music, and some of those fans probably feel it is safer to stick with the pop/rock 80s era Prince, with the songs, that didn't make them think too much about the uncomfortable, existing, socio-political or race issues that truly existed at that time too.
The thing is artists/musicians like Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Gil Scott Heron, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, The Tempations, just to name a few, have wirtten/sung songs that touched on socio-eocomic/race/ war and polirical issues.
But even with that Prince has still managed to successfully cross racial lines ,with his music, and that's a positive thing. [Edited 1/1/11 11:12am]

what ever his perceived disconnection from the Black community may have been in the past, one thing is shonuff true...and that is at the moment it's very strong. Its good that Prince takes pride in his heritage as a Rainbow Child, and hopefully he will bring his ass to Africa in the near future

Yes I did. The vids touched on a lot of the 60s political era and the black musicians/artists around at that time. Those were the days where you could not ignore the societal/economic, and certainly "racial" issues that were going on at a time, where people were still fighting for human rights. It was music by the artists/musicians at that time that helped to "spread the message" and "awaken the conscience" of sleeping Americans. The issues at that time certainly could not be ignored, not even by musicians/artists. They were a very big part of raising social/political awareness through their music.
Nothing wrong with having a "Black Muse" in your life. I had/have plenty who have inspired me to never sell my dignity at any price, love who I am and the skin I'm in, as well as standing up against those who actually think they can own your dignity and spirit by trying to find all kinds of ways to "bring you down". If you have love and acceptance of self, none of that can ever be taken away from you, despite the evil ways of others that one may encounter throughout their lives. My muses come from all walks of society.

That is my mother's favorite movie. My sisters and I watched that movie with her over the years several times. The part where they show the character "Eurydices" as a little girl dancing to the character "Orpheus" playing the guitar( or was it the uekele?), and she's on top of the hill dancing, reminds me of my mom as a young girl, when she told me the story of when she was a little girl, and how she and her cousins and the kids on the part of the island where her grandfather lived, would go up the hill in St. Thomas, VI, to visit her grandfather, and watch and listen to him play the accordion. She and all the kids would dance when he played it. The actress who played "Eurydices" also reminds me of my mother as a young woman, because of her long hair and complexion. The actress who played the part of "Eurydices" cousin, always reminds me of my Aunt Inez. Love that movie. I must have watched it at least 10 times over the years. [Edited 1/1/11 12:52pm]

It sure is an intense movie. The scene with the dancing little girl in the white dress and the little boy raising up the Sun is so adorable.
Prince had this very scene on his screens in a dance-mix video he played at the 3121 rio shows.

It's called "Black Orpheus". It's a Black Brazilian love story. If you're lucky to find it translated in English then that's cool, but more than likely you should be able to find it with English subtitles. [Edited 1/2/11 6:26am]

you make a good point Nouveau about the "ease" of picking apart prince's political naivety (which i don't think is as naive as some think on some subjects, but that's another thread...). the thing about racism is that for many, it IS cryptic in a way because it produces blind spots, biases, double standards, and privileges people aren't even aware they have. so for YOU the clarity is there (your posts have shown that), but i don't think you can say that for others' automatic aversion to Black Muse (or other songs in such a "category")

Not off topic at all ! - in fact this little clip may tie in the whole Black Muse idea, according to Love33's post #333 - she, the girl in white may represent the one restoring peace in the brotherhood ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• S(((O)))u¬...._-..-_......_-∆-...••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
