But........on another note, in "Black Muse" in the lines highlighted a few posts up, where it states "..your father", sounds like he's referencing his love for God. Just a thought, I could be wrong.

GOD = BLACK MUSE ?

eek lol I did not say that. I do not know the significance of the "Black Muse" in that song. I said that particular line in the song, where he mentions "your father", is where it seems he is referencing God, and that was on the basis that some religious folks refer to God as "Father". Never said Black Muse equals God. Are you trying to start a fire up in here or something? lol

Nooooo fight lol , I was amazed of your comparison....which was why black went italic and underlined.

No doubt, God is Prince's eternal true muse / source of inspiration....but with all due respect I don't think God is Black...I think God is Above color...way way above. I thought you meant the whole song was a dedication to God, not just that line...(pardon the fusion.)

Father however , yes could easily be a reference to God, but why your father, not our father.

Even Jesus in his model prayer says our Father

Well, I can't answer that question regarding why that lyric line says "your father" instead of "our father". I'm not a very religious person, and I never associated any particular race to God. I don't see God as white, black, green or blue, but moreso as an unexplainable spirit. Only one who can answer your question is the writer of the song. However, I still would like to know why the writer of the song chose "Black" to describe the "Muse" he speaks of. Who and what is the "Black Muse?"

Ahh...very good observation. You got me there. I could see all of them being an inspiration to him. Lalah Hathaway, Misty Copeland, and Sheila E., as well as Shelby J. and others. Interesting indeed.

Answer to your other question: Yes I was at the 12/18 and 12/29 shows.

Okay, I'll play along:

If we're talking about my biological father, he would have told me to stop misbehaving, but if we're talking about what one sees or refers to as the "spiritual father" then he may advise me to "stop sinning". (Hey do I get an "A+" if I get this right? Just sayin':lol )

I need to hear this song. I guess a song can bore a person if they can't relate to the lyric.IMHO

That is true... I guess Black Muse doesn't work for everyone. You can relate through the message of the song because of understanding, but you can also be bored by the music... it just doesn't do it for me.

Can anyone tell me why it's called black muse, but when you see the lyrics it doesn't seem to fit? Or am I missing the boat again? lol... wink

Nope you could be right, but from what another orger explained here , it is obviously someone the writer of the song draws inspiration from, which could be many of his musician/artist associates, close friends, etc. I get your point though that the title of a song or lyriics may not fit the music to it. But since the song is not our creation, other than that of the artist, only he would be able to explain the purpose of the title of the song and the lyrics and music behind it. Guess all we could do is...well, guess it's meaning. I can only guess the term "Black" was used in a racial sense to define who the muse is. shrug

Very good explanation. I believe everyone should do their part in learning and teaching others the truth about everything when it comes to race and the history of all the good, bad and ugly. People are given the opportunity to learn these things, but even with that you have to do a lot of research from various forms of literature because we all know that not everything you read from one particular sector is always truth. smile

Thank you, All! Brilliant analyses.

In my humble opinion, it's as much personalized, as it is generalized,

of which such ambiguity has always been a highly-standardized

and hotly-debatable trademark of Prince's conceptualized presentations.

The Black Muse has been strongly hailed and saluted in every performer,

and indeed in every encounter. However, he is steadily, as there still exists

room for him to delve even deeper, taking it back even further beyond

the confines of the Purple Rain threshold to a time when yes, the Deity

was personalized as The Black Muse: The Isiac period of The Madonna and Child;

Piye and the 25th Dynasty -- now, that's a movie that needs to be made and is

so much akin to what Prince is demonstrating in his new conquest -- thus

cementing a new awakening that will enrich our generation, and those to come,

with a dynamic platform of a legacy so strongly foundated, that if proudly stood upon,

there just simply will be no limit to new minds devoid of the confines of rooftops!

However, the presentation does take on the semblance of a much more

personalized affirmation with the simulated segue into The Beautiful Ones!

Granted that, yes, Purple has now been restored to His Eminence, is life

now imitating art and is The Kid now once again caught in a Love triangle?

Is the battle between Set and Osiris once again being fought? Are Romulus and

Remus still engaged in war? Do they share a common Muse?

Is The Black Muse, in this instance, wise enough to seek not to fuel a feud

and maintain balance?

Well, if she Loves them both, and I think she does, strongly and deeply neutral,

and one man's gain will become another's pain, can she bear to see

either in pain?

So will she recuse, is there something patently flawed with

her views, will she just simply not choose?

And in so doing, will that be a sensible enough choice for both to find their way

back to the brotherhood they once knew wink ?

Happy New Year to both of you rose rose You know who you are!

The choice is Peace! It is always a better choice!

There is indeed a lot of work to be done!

Peace follows the footsteps and wisdom flows from lips.

When the Kid opened his mouth in the Purple Rain honey spilled from it and spread on the stage.

How and when will the work be done, if not through profound peace ? - the only way.

you know a significant number of ppl aren't going to like the song because the word Black is in it. they'll assume its the African-American male prince who needs to shut up and not be "political" or spiritual and just play music. they'll take black in the title as rejection on a personal (or dominant culture) level. not comparing the songs, but this thought process has shown up in threads about such songs as Dear Mr. Man or Family Name

In a way I agree with you. Somehow the term "Black" makes some ppl shake in their boots unnecessarily. I find that due to all the misinformation/lies/unnecessary fear and "ignorance' taught to many generations, about specific groups and historical matters, while many individuals were/are at fault themselves for not making the effort to challenge that information shared, to at least do some research and comparisons, before embracing misinformation and untruths as facts..

I've never seen anyone say anything like that on here, and if they did they'd get a beatdown hard and fast.

People do pick apart Prince's political naivety and paranoid conspiracy theories because it's so easy to do. This has nothing to do with crypto-racism.

Good to know someone here knows about the 25th Dynasty, which was the era the Nubians ruled Egypt. King Piye was an interesting man of sorts. I took an interest in this topic about 6 years ago.

http://wysinger.homestead...nubia.html
The Nubians are believed to be the first human race on earth, and most of their customs and traditions were adopted by the ancient Egyptians [Diodorus; History, Book III: 2).. To the Greeks, they were known as Ethiopians and Nubia as the land of Punts, i.e. the land of gods.
