1. the revolution happened a long time ago when artists migrated to the net.

2. a lot of artists have made really good money doing whatever they want with their own music, on the net.

3. a lot of artists also give their music away for free, on the net.

4. finding new distribution methods via commercial mass media channels is, of course, innovative.

5. fair to say an artist doesnt need to rely on commercial mass media channels of distribution to make money, considering all the artists who make money, on the net.

6. maybe its about the fame, and how commercial media guarantees an artist a certain level of fame, which the net, and other methods, may not.

7. so when artists say they want a record deal so they can make money, is that the whole story?

8. when artists complain about their record deal and how all the label wants to do is make money at the art's expense, and how they want to find alternative methods of commercial distribution, my rhetorical question to those artists would be:

why do you want public notoriety?

why do you want fame?

if what you really care about is the art,

why do you want everyone to know your name?

why not jump on the net?

charge the fee you choose?

you could even give it away for free

its not like you've got anything to lose

why the need for commercial hype?

why do you subjegate your integrity?

why the focus on art for art's sake

then turn around and mention the money?

be honest all you artists

its the fame you really want

when all the other options you've got

are ready, waiting, and hot

you can make your money anywhere

when push comes down to shove

but what you really want is fame now huh

as a substitute for love

lets be real.

I want that HOLOGRAM cover though! And a decent case!

I say get it while it's free, people still buying the album and paying full price......

Why you say because they missed the give away, someone played it to them and they like it, it's been selling in small steady numbers on Amazon for 2 years now.... lol cool

Chairman of the Entertainment Retailers Association, Paul Quirk, said the music star securing a second deal was "no great surprise".

He added: "I'm not sure anyone regards the freebie he did with the Mail on Sunday as being the highlight of his musical career.

"If he doesn't think his new album is worth paying for, presumably he doesn't think it is worth listening to."

Bitter much? lol

Of course, this is the perception it gives to the average listener too, but when the listener is a Daily Mirror reader, who really gives a shit!

These CDs are a nice chunk of change up front and promo for live ticket sales.

No i haven't either and i've been checking the paper everyday thoroughly going through it, can't see anything, but my daughter said it was on the BB3 news yesterday about the paper release. I think the Mirror will probably make big advertisements of it over the weekend etc.

Prince Reveals New Album 20TEN Giveaway, Tour Dates & Tickets E-mail
Written by Stereoboard.com

Prince Reveals New Album 20TEN Giveaway, Tour Dates & Tickets

Global megastar Prince will distribute his new album, '20TEN', through a number of international media partnerships and alternative distribution channels.

The first phase of the release will take place in July 2010 when The Mirror and Daily Record in Britain, Rolling Stone Magazine in Germany, Courrier International in France and Belgium's Het Nieuwblad newspaper will cover-mount '20TEN', Prince's twenty seventh studio album. The Mirror, Rolling Stone and Het Nieuwblad had rare access to Prince at his Paisley Park complex in Minnesota.

Kiran Sharma, Prince's representative, said: "'The Most Beautiful Girl In The World' in 1994 was Prince's first number one selling single as a free artist. Now, in 2010, Prince continues to work in an independent capacity, highlighted here in a world first of delivering the new album across multiple territories, through complementary distribution channels. Further details regarding other territories will be announced soon."

Prince's 2007 album 'Planet Earth' was released as a free cover-mount CD with the Mail on Sunday newspaper in the U.K., to coincide with his London O2 Arena shows. '20TEN', a celebratory, quintessential Prince masterpiece, marks the start of his international 20TEN tour.

London-based marketing company Upfront Media Group, who coordinated 2007's Mail on Sunday campaign, worked on some of the new 20TEN campaign: "We are proud to be working with Prince again, creating this groundbreaking international cover-mount with 20TEN" said Upfront's managing director Simon Stanford.

ImagePrince wrote, produced and recorded the album, which is described as having "strong funk and new wave elements". Recorded at Paisley Park, 20TEN features guest appearances by saxophonist Maceo Parker and singers Shelby J, Liv Warfield and Elisa Dease.

The nine songs on '20TEN' show Prince is still at the peak of his songwriting powers. No artist has created a body of work as dynamic or as diverse as Prince. No other recording artist has accomplished what he has in music, film, or new media. He is a one man juggernaut, uniting the genres of funk, rock, soul, jazz, R&B, pop, rap and new wave under one unique sound: his.

20TEN Tracklisting
1. Compassion
2. Beginning Endlessly
3. Future Love Song
4. Sticky Like Glue
5. Act Of God
6. Lavaux
7. Walk In Sand
8. Sea Of Everything
9. Everybody Loves Me

PRINCE 20TEN - July tour dates
4th July - Roskilde Festival - Denmark
5th July - Waldbuhne - Berlin
9th July - La Citadelle - Arras, France
10th July - Werchter Festival Park - Belgium
12th July - Stade De Geneve - Geneva
13th July - Wiener Stadthalle - Vienna
18th July - Super Bock Super Rock Festival - Portugal
25th July - Espace Nikaia - Nice

Fans can look forward to hearing new material from 20TEN as well as Prince's numerous hits. In true Prince fashion, no two shows are ever the same and anything can happen once the band starts playing! Prince will be joined on stage by Morris Hayes and Cassandra O'Neal (keyboards), Cora Coleman (drums), Josh Dunham (bass), Elisa Dease, Shelby Johnson & Olivia Warfield (vocals) and Fredrick Yonnet (harmonica).

10 Reasons Why I Love Prince: #1

In 10 days, Prince – my musical messiah – will be releasing a brand new album, for free, entitled 20Ten via the Daily Mirror. In celebration I will be posting something (in no particular order) Prince related everyday for the next 10 ten days in a new feature called quite simply ‘10 Reasons Why I Love Prince’, all leading up the the new LP.

I’ve been a long standing stan of The Purple One for years and so along the way have discovered many videos, interviews, live performances, pictures etc that many people haven’t seen before or just didn’t know existed (you’d be forgiven, Prince runs this internet ting) – and so with the new album on the way, I thought what better time to share these things than now? So, let’s kick things off…

Reason #1

Prince’s ‘Partyman’ video – so many people forget or don’t know that Prince provided an incredible original soundtrack for the 1989 “Batman” movie. While the film was somewhat questionable, the OST was superb – a brave move on everyones part to ‘allow’ Prince free reign on a big blockbuster movie soundtrack, but as part of Warner Bro’s contact with him the risk paid off. The album hit the top spot on the Billboard album chart and stayed there for 6 weeks and old over 3 million copies in the States.

‘Partyman’ sees Prince – half genius, half Joker – get down and rock out in Gothan City. He ain’t playin either. Backed by his full band Mr Nelson lets loose and goes all out this is sexy and rather odd video. The track is straight fire too.

I think art can be art but I do tend to agree with you. Where Prince is good here is that he is breaking the resistance that he is facing i.e. He is not very popular and as such is getting himseldf out there. However I do believe that I think Prince would love a normal recording deal because firstly you know you are popular and secondly he must spend sooooooo much bloody time orchestrating this stuff he must be knackered

This is tragic. The pop album, what once used to be a high art form, has devolved into a tchatche, a throwaway gimmick to help sell 50 cent tabloid newspapers.

Mr. Nelson, is this really worth a few pennies in your pockets?

I think it is more of an avenue for an independent artist to get his music it out in a cost effective way.

1) Prince gets paid up front. He doesn't have to wait 6 months to get paid. He also reaches a wider audience, who might not have purchased his CD. This exposure takes the place of radio play.

Agreed.
