BET, BET......BET.

The Good: The Prince Tribute, the MJ Tribute, Latifiah's Bits, JADA Pinketts OUTFIT, and El Debarge.

The Bad: Anything Trey Songz related & Alicia out of Keys missing every 5th note.

The Ugly: Opening the show with Rap and ending the show with rap. What is the Hiphop Awards show 4? I could barely tell one rap song/performance from the next.

Trey Songz 4 BEST R&B singer? Really?

A 3.5 hour show going L O N G, wow someone should be unemployed today.

Having 2 cut Prince's performance because the show was 2 long. Pitiful.

How ironice that after El Blew up the stage with his vocal performance that hey gave Trey an award 4 singing?

After the very nice Prince tribute, Luda comes out rapping about what his "chick" can do better than yours. The irony.

I like Ludacris but his song was terrible!!!! disbelief And Diddy needs to give up on trying to rap/sing/dance because he sucks! lol

Da hayel happen to the site last night? I logged on Pacific Standard Time to give my two cents, and nada, nothing, ziltch until this morning. Oh well, I'm obviously late with this but....all things considered, Alicia Key's "Adore" tribute and Chris Brown's MJ Tribute were the best performances of the night in my opinion.

Someone should have gotten a very long handled cane and pulled Trey Songz ass off the stage by the neck for butchering Purple Rain. After Prince's acceptance speech, my friend posted on facebook "Prince you forgot to thank Trey Songz". Probably because he wanted to punch him. wink

Why was Prince lying to everyone when he said something to the effect that he felt confident in leaving music in the hands of everyone who performed that night (or something similar to that). I think that he was referring to this "generation of musicians". This generation of musicians suck! But what else was he supposed to say. In my opinon it seemed like almost everyone was having an "off" night.

So many of you have posted on Alicia Keys threads on this forum that she is a boring entertainer. Well, you can't get more exciting than jumping up doing a Prince crawl on a grand piano when you are prego. eek

Anybody know who the bald headed lady was sitting next to him? I've never seen her before, I was thinking that maybe she was family, or a stylist. Have no idea.

Yeah, somebody broke the org, eek

The lady was Shelby J., looks like she recently shaved her head. She's been his backup singer since around '07, after Tamar.

I thought it was a good tribute. Alicia and Janelle were my favorite. Prince looked real worried when Alicia climbed up on the piano.

And the shoe incident was priceless!

I was just happy to see such a sweet smile on his face. Never seen him smile so much in one evening...I tell ya, he looked positively precious, nod

Actually, Shelby J doesn't look too bad with her head shaved. She had her makeup on nicie. If it works for her and she's comfortable with it, then that's all that really matters. I missed the shoe incident, but will catch the last half of the show on repeat, since we know BET repeats their award shows often.

I agree. Prince looked very happy, and was obviously enjoying the tribute of all who participated and seemed very appreciative. It is obvious he was comfortable with the choices he made to represent him in that tribute. . He was very humble in his speech as well, and it was nice to see that he received enormous love from the BET audience as well.

Prince neednt be sharing the same stage as 98% of those performers, with all due respect to them.

Did anyone else besides me hold out even the tiniest bit of hope that maybe -- just MAYBE -- Prince would thank his fans? A lifetime achievement award speech seemed like the perfect opportunity to do that. He gives notoriously short speeches to begin with...I was kind of keeping my fingers crossed for a little fan recognition. Damn.

Lame. Lame. Lame. Esperanza was cool. Alicia surprised.

Why only women performing a tribute to Prince? Such a limited range of people. Such a limited mention of Prince's music, influence and range. Why not play jazz clips, clips with him performing with Miles Davis, Five Blind Boys, Common? No mention of Superbowl record audience. No mention of 21 Nights record shows(Why, because they can't stop going on about perv MJ??? and greasy Jermaine was there?) Come on.

This lame tribute seemed like it was written by an intern or someone who hasn't really paid attention to Prince since 1985. It was clearly someone who doesn't fully understand or appreciate his talent, artistry and contribution to music.

The entire show was actually lame. It made me ashamed as a black man to see what substitutes for black culture now. Broken English, thuggery, lack of talent and no appreciation for muscianship. Just liket the larger black culture, black music is on its death bed. It needs some CPR.

What's a "fan"? OH, you mean FAMS, right? Oh, he can't do that because that would be too much like acknowledging IDOL worship. Although he appeared on a show call American Idol, yet he doesn't get involved with American politics. And if you flip and reverse the "p" and bring the "i" to the front you get "idoltics". YOU SEE??!!

I agree that the Prince tribute was nice and he definitely seemed pleased by those who participated in it, and he was getting into it, when Patti sang Purple Rain. I liked that he was humble during his speech as well. There was just too many rappers in the show and they all seemed to overdo it, and all sounded the same. It would have been nice to incorporate more singers/performers. I actually thought Ludacris was going away from the rap game, since he's been doing movies, and especially now that he's older. I don't know what to make of Chris with the MJ tribute, but if it was too emotional for him to do, then BET should have chose someone else. I just felt there were too much hip-hoppery during the show.

I have to agree that I enjoyed El's performance, and he still looks good as an older artist, despite some of the personal issues he's faced during his years.

Well he said that "he was wild" when he was younger, and then he went into the ole "don't do what I did" speech. He was indeed very very wild, raunchy, nasty etc. And though we are all here because he has a strong fan base. He would have even had a stronger fan base if he didn't isolate some listeners with the raunchy lyrics. Then you know the whole contracts, name change, slave on the face etc. I guess he was trying to impart some knowledge on folks. That's my guess.

WHAT!! Are you serious? I'm sorry but the whole "I was wild, don't do what I did" nonsense SCREAMED "I'm a hypocrite and Jehovah won't let me acknowledge that the BEST music I did was when I was wild." Prince would have been just another talented musician if he hadn't let himself be "free" in every aspect of the word. His "raunchy" lyrics, his androgynous nature, his willingness to say "fuck it" in the face of convention is what MADE him be more that just another talented musician. These weren't mistakes, these were calculated choices from a man who knew what he was doing.

Oh, and one more thing. The state of Black music is HORRIBLE. So Prince, stop lying to these terrible "musicians and performers" because the future of music is in CRAPPY hands if these hack-jobs are it.

OMG - seriously? rolleyes

It's called being a gracious winner. Did you really expect him to get up there and say, "Man, you people SUCK!"

Last night, he came off as grateful, humble and generous. All of which accrues to his favor.

I love Hip Hop.....on record. With the exception of a few select artists (The Roots, Common, Jigga) most of the Hip Hop live shows I've seen are GARBAGE!! Music doesn't have to be something that you HAVE to recreate live, at least in my opinion. But if you CAN'T recreate it live, then DON"T try!!

No, he didn't have to - but it's nice that he did.

Whether you like it or not, Prince is now an "elder statesman." Congratulating his fellow performers (in public, anyway) is just something a diplomat does. It harms no one - and it raises his stature.

Part of the problem with the world today is that nobody seems to recognize that there is a time and place for brutal honesty - and a time and place for ignoring the bitter truth. An awards show is a time for the latter.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

OMG Train Wreck! eek

They had what 4 women up there and NONE of them could hit Prince's high notes and just solid perfectly clear singing voice. Now the rest of the show, I didn't even watch.. seeing black 40+ year olds trying to still be cool is well sad. Can someone tell everyone there, after you get around 35 years old, you are not happening anymore.

Vivica Fox a few years ago kept saying over & over "Dropin' like its Hot" over & over. Howard Stern played it the next morning and she might have said that tern maybe 25 times.

Diddy, your 40, its over. Rap is a young man's game, sure you have quality Rappers Jay Z & Eminem, but just in general its a style of music most who listen after they hit around 32 years old. They stop listening to rap completely or just listen to old albums once in awhile.

No 15 year old is going to want to listen to Diddy lip sync and shitty dance on the BET Music Awards.

Prince was laughing, all this pretend loving "his culture" bullshit is bullshit! You can't love that crap, its horrible.. Listening to 95 Hype Man as the others Mumble in a microphone for 3 hours Isn't Music... and shouldn't be in a Award Show.

99% of the people in the audience think it sounds like crap, but they are older so they want to cater to a younger audience so they are hoping some teeanger might think they are still cool. eek

The Prince tribute was very nice. Janelle Monae put her own touches on "Let's Go Crazy" and it worked very well. Esperanza Spaulding was quite good. I'd never heard anything from her before and now I'm extremely interested in her. Alicia Keys showed true love for the man with her take on "Adore". He had to look over at Swizz Beats when she jumped on that piano and make sure dude hadn't stormed out. Patti Labelle ripped "Purple Rain" with her own style and I expected nothing less from her. The choices were perfect. These women are truly fans and admirers of his work and they showed it the respect it deserves. Getting more popular or current names wouldn't have worked to the tributes advantage. Congratulations Prince.

By the way, Prince you was looking smoothed out and good job catching that shoe!

clapping

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!
