It was a wonderful tribute. I loved Patti Labelle's performance as well as Alicia Keyes climbing on the piano. I was worried at first but she pulled it off so well.

I thought Patti was horrendous. She butchered the song...

Yeah, she pretty much screamed on through it. But when you scream on key, and you are a legend, it doesn't really matter. You could see that Prince was loving Patty.

it was funny though, the way she 'walked' across the stage and then stood in front

of prince, she looked like she was gonna take a poop right there in front of him falloff

none of them did a real good job. i guess it's probably very hard to pull of his songs

but damn, it would have been nice to see someone like badu there. anyway, nice

show all the same. just a bit so so.

and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Trey Songz sounded like that Eddie Murphey character with the Jherri Curl "Sexy Chocolate" from Coming to America.

He sounded like a hyena with that vibrato. And that Yaaah Hoooo..Yaaaah Hoooo was just outright wrong.

There's a little thing called "practice". Guess he never heard of that. And why the hell didn't the soundcheck quality people tell him to by no means even dream of singing that song. Who let that shyt go down like that? Somebody should be fired.

Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

I will not hammer the performers in the tribute. After all, look at who they are following in their tribute. After you have heard Prince do a song, no one can ever do justice on a cover. At least I have never heard anyone do justice at it.

That being said, I think they gave it their all, none so much as alecia, who in my opinion gave the best performance of the night, and it takes someone who is really passionate about Prince to cover that song, it is truly one of his best.

Patti gave nothing but love to the boy, and I could see he felt it. I do think, though her performance was not the strongest, but was the best deserved. Patti is a vet, just as Prince, and that gives him acclimates. I believe he was honored.

I really love the fact that he told the other artist that they didn't have to make the mistakes that he had made. I know some would argue, what mistakes? But Prince knows his life and how his actions have effected him, and there is no better judge than one's self.

We are all so full of doody here

Well he said that "he was wild" when he was younger, and then he went into the ole "don't do what I did" speech. He was indeed very very wild, raunchy, nasty etc. And though we are all here because he has a strong fan base. He would have even had a stronger fan base if he didn't isolate some listeners with the raunchy lyrics. Then you know the whole contracts, name change, slave on the face etc. I guess he was trying to impart some knowledge on folks. That's my guess.

Esperanza was the best part of the Prince tribute. Her coolness overshadowed Janelle and Alicia, and even Ms. Patti.

Poor Trey. I felt so bad for him. His nerves got the best of him and it was downhill after that. After that debacle I had no idea they would roll out "Purple Rain" a second time with Patti. Janell Monae had great energy but another song may have been better for her. Alicia did well even though she was scaring me at the end. Esperanza had an incredibly boring rendition of a Prince classic and well Patti is Patti. On a scale of 1 to 10 this tribute was a 3 at the most. Prince was quite charming and gracious in his speech though thank God.

Patti is definitely not afraid to ball her face up while singing with a mean screw face frown. LOL. I would love to hear something new by Patti. Something that she puts effort into. Quincy Jones should do "one for the road" since he's old and all, and get Patti, Aretha, Patti Austin, Bobby Womack, and make something happen on CD.

Patti could just scream one note for 3 minutes, and Prince would eat that shyd up. He loves her.

Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

What a sensational tribute! I thought all four women did fantastic job. The energy Janelle showed & kick off with was incredible, Esperanza was just down right classy & sexy, Alicia flawless as always & I loved seeing her let go, pregnant & all and Patti – oh Patti, what a fabulous cresendo to a unforgettable tribute dedicated to a unforgettable musician & man.

Do not over-analyse & appreciate the tribute, his speech & recognition for what it is: 100% Class & Style!

WHAT!! Are you serious? I'm sorry but the whole "I was wild, don't do what I did" nonsense SCREAMED "I'm a hypocrite and Jehovah won't let me acknowledge that the BEST music I did was when I was wild." Prince would have been just another talented musician if he hadn't let himself be "free" in every aspect of the word. His "raunchy" lyrics, his androgynous nature, his willingness to say "fuck it" in the face of convention is what MADE him be more that just another talented musician. These weren't mistakes, these were calculated choices from a man who knew what he was doing.

Oh, and one more thing. The state of Black music is HORRIBLE. So Prince, stop lying to these terrible "musicians and performers" because the future of music is in CRAPPY hands if these hack-jobs are it.

That may very well be....but he is obviously backpeddling away from it at this time in his life. I mean even if there was no J.W. factor; would prince really be out there doing songs like "Darling Nikki" at 52 years of age? To the younger generation he would look to be a "dirty ole man". So some wisdom comes with age, regardless of religion. He still has sexual themes in his music...but they are soo much more tasteful ie. Lolita & Working Up A Black Sweat.

Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

Let the church say 'amen'. Damn......she was so silky smooth. Everything about that performance was on the money.

Patti is Patti.....you know what to expect, as my Grandmother says, "All that yellin'". I thought Alicia Keys' vocals were dreadful. When reaching for the falsetto......ouch. I actually like the Janelle number. Didn't know what to expect, but I think she rocked it. But man, the Esperanza clip is on heavy rotation in this office today.

Im not saying he should be writing songs like Darling Nikki at 52. Im not saying he should be grinding and humping the floor at 52. But saying that doing that when he was younger was a mistake is bullshit. Thats the JW talking. And Lolita is about NOT having casual sex. Last time I checked plenty of 52 year old men have casual sex. But JW's arent supposed too.

BET, BET......BET.

The Good: The Prince Tribute, the MJ Tribute, Latifiah's Bits, JADA Pinketts OUTFIT, and El Debarge.

The Bad: Anything Trey Songz related & Alicia out of Keys missing every 5th note.

The Ugly: Opening the show with Rap and ending the show with rap. What is the Hiphop Awards show 4? I could barely tell one rap song/performance from the next.

Trey Songz 4 BEST R&B singer? Really?

A 3.5 hour show going L O N G, wow someone should be unemployed today.

Having 2 cut Prince's performance because the show was 2 long. Pitiful.

How ironic that after El Blew up the stage with his vocal performance that hey gave Trey an award 4 singing?

After the very nice Prince tribute, Luda comes out rapping about what his "chick" can do better than yours. The irony.
