there went shelby's hair ..to janelle ...lawd ..

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Come on folks, this was embarrassing, and I felt sorry for Prince - you can see why he chose not to perform, because it was a fucking hot mess. He looked itching to get out of there during the performances.

I like Janelle, but that rendition of Let's Go Crazy was pretty awful...way, WAAAY too much screeching and shrieking and generally spazzing out. barf I enjoyed her dancing though. I do like her, I just didnt' like her singing LGC.

Alicia - who I don't much care for - actually did the best though, imo. The writhing on top of the piano was a little out there but oh well. lol

I think the outfit is cool & reminds me of the baggy Grafitti Bridge days. I presume that's the "Knowledge tree". Looking well, can't wait for 10th July, 1st open air Prince concert I've been to for 18 years and we get a new record ON THE SAME DAY excited

Da hayel happen to the site last night? I logged on Pacific Standard Time to give my two cents, and nada, nothing, ziltch until this morning. Oh well, I'm obviously late with this but....all things considered, Alicia Key's "Adore" tribute and Chris Brown's MJ Tribute were the best performances of the night in my opinion.

Someone should have gotten a very long handled cane and pulled Trey Songz ass off the stage by the neck for butchering Purple Rain. After Prince's acceptance speech, my friend posted on facebook "Prince you forgot to thank Trey Songz". Probably because he wanted to punch him. wink

Why was Prince lying to everyone when he said something to the effect that he felt confident in leaving music in the hands of everyone who performed that night (or something similar to that). I think that he was referring to this "generation of musicians". This generation of musicians suck! But what else was he supposed to say. In my opinon it seemed like almost everyone was having an "off" night.

So many of you have posted on Alicia Keys threads on this forum that she is a boring entertainer. Well, you can't get more exciting than jumping up doing a Prince crawl on a grand piano when you are prego. eek

Anybody know who the bald headed lady was sitting next to him? (Nevermind....Shelby J).

Why didn't they let somebody with a voice sing Teddy's songs? sad

Tyreese has an unbelievably great voice. Seems he was having a bit of an off night last night. But the more appropriate person to do Teddy's tribute was Jahiem. I mean Jahiem would have tore that place down to the ground if he did that tribute.

1. You see that stuff on Jerry Springer every day for the past 15 years, doesn't make it exciting.

2. Shelby, apparently.

Yeah, somebody broke the org, eek

The lady was Shelby J., looks like she recently shaved her head. She's been his backup singer since around '07, after Tamar.

I thought it was a good tribute. Alicia and Janelle were my favorite. Prince looked real worried when Alicia climbed up on the piano.

And the shoe incident was priceless!

I was just happy to see such a sweet smile on his face. Never seen him smile so much in one evening...I tell ya, he looked positively precious, nod

I was too worried about Alicia tumbling or going into labour to be excited about her climbing on the piano. I think Prince was the same, he was all "Uh...what is she doing"

He did look really good. He was dressed more casualthan usual but good as always, but his hair was looking really really good. He just looked good overall. I thought that Pattie shoe incident was very cute also. But that's Prince for ya, he's a charmer when he wants to be.

Okay I'm so damn mad that after the Janelle Monae performance that the damn org site wouldn't even come up on my computer lol That's some bullshit man.

Anywho....Janelle did an awesome job at her tribute. She was the perfect person to do that song.

The next girl was okay, though she did do way better than Goat Songz....

Alicia over did it as usual. I found it disturbing that she crawled her big ass on top of that piano trying to act like Vanity or some shit...I was more afraid that she would slip off and hurt the baby. confused

Patti, Patti did her thing. I especially loved how she kicked her shoes off and P caught one of them. lol That was classic.

Just wish he would have performed afterwards though. It seems in the past all the other lifetime achievement honorees did some numbers after receiving their award.neutral

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Some are complaining that the tribute was ragedy. I'm no big fan of Janelle, but I agree I thought that she did a "fun job" with "Let's go Crazy". Well I think Espiranza Sparks (spelling) was really really having a very bad night. But she's kinda like a choke artist. I saw her give a performance at the White House for Stevie Wonder, and Obama, and she's just not "solid'. But the potential draws the listener in, probably due to the base playing and the timbre of her voice.

Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

I thought the tribute was great - and it was obvious that Prince was enjoying it. Every time I thought I'd seen the funniest moment (and cutest facial expression), he'd top it. I about died when he was all eek and clutching at Shelby when Alicia climbed up on that piano. And during Patti's bit - man, he was just enjoying the hell out of that. He was trying to be all cool during the earlier performances and not break into a big cheesy grin, but he just couldn't help it with her - especially after she kicked off her shoes.

Somebody need to feed him, though.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

The Prince tribute was not what it could have been. Janelle-so so disappointing. Trey-wtf . Esperenza-not bad. Alicia-true talent and awesome. Patti-all she did was wail and not really sing. And just that was still pretty good.

Yeah, she pretty much screamed on through it. But when you scream on key, and you are a legend, it doesn't really matter. You could see that Prince was loving Patty.

question tho..why have a hip hop awards show when pretty much everything on this show has been hip hop?

I said the same thing to myself. I'm like where are all of the real vocalists tonight? If you take out the tributes, hardly any "vocalists" only rappers. Why have Hip Hop Awards now?
