The Prince tribute was very nice. Janelle Monae put her own touches on "Let's Go Crazy" and it worked very well. Esperanza Spaulding was quite good. I'd never heard anything from her before and now I'm extremely interested in her. Alicia Keys showed true love for the man with her take on "Adore". He had to look over at Swizz Beats when she jumped on that piano and make sure dude hadn't stormed out. Patti Labelle ripped "Purple Rain" with her own style and I expected nothing less from her. The choices were perfect. These women are truly fans and admirers of his work and they showed it the respect it deserves. Getting more popular or current names wouldn't have worked to the tributes advantage. Congratulations Prince.

By the way, Prince you was looking smoothed out and good job catching that shoe!

clapping

Prince was sexy, as always, but man I felt his pain when Trey Songz sang PR, I still can't get over that, that fucking sucked! lol And when Alicia Keyes was on that piano, man lol Prince looked like he was about to have a hard-on. lol NOT!!!!!

I'm a bit let down with the whole thing. The BET Awards in general are always pretty whack, but last night's was ridiculously bad. The show SUCKED up to when El Debarge turned around in his Danny Zucko jacket and sang. THAT was, by far, the best moment in the show to that point. (PS His single drops in July, and his new album, Second Chance, drops after that.)

Chris Beat'em'Down Brown: Endless cringe moments with that dude.

re: Prince tribute

Trey Wrongz was horrible. I knew he was going to go into "Purple Rain", because the whole song sounded like "Purple Rain" anyway. It was horrible. He knew it, we knew it, and Prince knew it.

Janelle Monae singing "Let's Go Crazy" - PERFECT! She couldn't have done a more perfect song for her style.

Esparanza Spaulding - HOLY SHIZNIT. I need to find this woman's work!

Alicia Keys - someone on the Wyldflow3r show At Midnight last night was talking about how dangerous they thought it was that pregnant Alicia was climbing around on a piano. I thought it was unnecessary in general.

Patti is Patti. I was disappointed that Chaka didn't sing. I think they could have chosen a different song than "Purple Rain" (the second time we heard it) to close with. They should have gotten a song that Patti and Chaka could have dueted on.

I turned off the show after that.

It's called being a gracious winner. Did you really expect him to get up there and say, "Man, you people SUCK!"

Last night, he came off as grateful, humble and generous. All of which accrues to his favor.

He didn't have to say anything about the artists who had performed that night. He could have just thanked those that did the tribute, thanked the people who helped him over the years, etc. and that would have been just as gracious. To straight up LIE to a room full of overrated "performers" was not necessary to appear humble.

[Edited 6/28/10 6:36am]

Wow they are nice enough to give him an award and you think he should get on the stage and put everybody down!

That would not be cool and in addition, P is too old to cut up like that. I think he knows and everyone at the show knows that talent today in the music industry is lacking. Ranting about it is not going to change anything.

Prince irritated the hell out of me too when he was "apologizing" for his past "mistakes"...please...his outlandish, I don't give a fuck persona is what made him famous in the first place. His willingness to take risks and not give a damn about how people felt about it is what got him to where he is now. Why the fuck is he apologizing for? I just wanted to tell him to SHUT THE FUCK UP AND JUST SAY THANK YOU for the FUCKING AWARD.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

He didn't apologize. He just said he did a lot of wild shit, had some regrets - and that others could make their point without going there.

That isn't an apology.

WHAT!! Are you serious? I'm sorry but the whole "I was wild, don't do what I did" nonsense SCREAMED "I'm a hypocrite and Jehovah won't let me acknowledge that the BEST music I did was when I was wild." Prince would have been just another talented musician if he hadn't let himself be "free" in every aspect of the word. His "raunchy" lyrics, his androgynous nature, his willingness to say "fuck it" in the face of convention is what MADE him be more that just another talented musician. These weren't mistakes, these were calculated choices from a man who knew what he was doing.

That may very well be....but he is obviously backpeddling away from it at this time in his life. I mean even if there was no J.W. factor; would prince really be out there doing songs like "Darling Nikki" at 52 years of age? To the younger generation he would look to be a "dirty ole man". So some wisdom comes with age, regardless of religion. He still has sexual themes in his music...but they are soo much more tasteful ie. Lolita & Working Up A Black Sweat.

Co-Sign JW or no JW no 52 year should be walking around wearing butt-out pants and giving people the finger. Everybody had to grow up sometime.

1.) Trey Songz should have left Purple Rain alone, he totally butchered the song, he did a dis-service 2 Prince on that one. Disrespectful rendition.

2.) Purple Rain is a song that should never be covered. Leave that 1 2 Prince alone.

3.) I loved Janelle rendition of Let's Go Crazy, it's a tribute, and they did well with the linn sounds and the full rock sound

4.) I loved Esperenza's rendition of If I Was Your Girlfriend, it's a tribute, she did a good job, loved the stand up bass

5.) I loved Alicia Key's rendition of Adore, it's a tribute, she did a good job

6.) I HATED Patties rendition of Purple Rain, there was no power to it. the 'wooo hoo hoo hoo' parts were weak. There was no rock edge to the song, Pattie seemed out of breath. She should have done Do Me Baby Uptown Free Pop Life Diamonds & Pearls. But not Purple Rain. On that one I could tell Prince was dissappointed.

Didn't somebody mess with the Beautiful Ones too?

LEAVE Purple Rain alone.

You know how ignorant people are, especially BET, who pretty much FORGOT that Prince had many songs. I was kind of hoping for "I Want To Be Your Lover", but I knew that wasn't going to happen. That damn tribute was mostly stuck in 1984. And Trey Songz version of PR was so bad that someone else had to sing it again? WTF?!!!! lol

Umm when you acknowledge that you made a mistake, that's along the lines of apologizing and recongizing that you regret something. He shouldn't have anything to regret. I think all of that was just bullshit on his part just as he was saying that "the future (of music) is in good hands", yeah right.

THANK U

I said the same thing. DUDE you wouldn't be where U are if it wasn't for those 'mistakes'

Now I will say if he was apologizing for the way he treated people, that's one thing.

But go apologize to those people.

Prince was is the only one, who seems to be having a problem with the his past, everyone else is trying to duplicate it or were cheering it on.

That seriously disappointed me.

I was honestly happy for him, got a bit emotional, looking at this artist who I've followed since the early 80's, get this recognition, it was bittersweet. Cause he was also apologizing for the person who made him who he is.
